We should definitely ask Robyn to do a specific drawing for us. The worst he can do is to say no - and I don't think he will. Rather than telling him what to draw, though, lets tell him what it's for, give him the general themes and see what he comes up with. Various folk on the list have had experience contacting either Robyn or his management in the past (you know who you are) -- any volunteers?? I diverge from Hal only in that I'd like to have the main graphic on the back -- with the fegMANIAX logo (small) on the front. I have several shirts with this format and I think they look much classier than the "traditional" picture-on-the-front types. Not Robyn. It was in the years 1985, 1986 that I, a frequent night clubber in CA, had seen many of my most favorite bands in various small joints: REM The Young Fresh Fellows RH & E It was truly a reminiscent time last night as I watched members from all of these bands perform onstage in a small joint last. Cranking out old classics, covers and new collaborative material. Highlights: - YFF (opener) play with their original bassist (before Jimbo Sangster) and perform many songs from their first two albums. Songs they have not played for quite some time. - RH as well played some early egyptians tunes. - Eventually joining in one by one: Scott McCaughey, Peter Buck, Tim Keegan, Kurt Bloch, Tad Hutchison. - The lads jammed to some Egyptians, Dylan, and some new tunes. - Plus a version of 'Give it to the Soft Boys' (sent out to "Andy, Morris and Kimberely... who I hope never have a chance to receive it") that was extremely powerful and seemed to leave the audience a bit shaken The lads were obviously having a good time and were really into it. They were also quite a bit spontaneous towards then end, with each of them shouting at each other what the next song was. All these factors add up to one of the best shows I have ever seen. Ahhh 1986 revisited... It is all coming together now... yes... I think I understand... It was a worthy rendition, and the perfect way to open the show. For despite the line-up of various musicians all famous in their own right, this night was all about Robyn. The Crocodile is known for such all-star revues. There used to be an annual "Trailer Park Blues" show, featuring Kevn Kinney and Friends. There have been several "Peter Buck and Friends" type shows. And Scott's ever-changing Minus 5 project also frequently brings together a number of talented players on one stage. This collaborative Seattle trend recently spawned the unique, world-beat Tuatara project, which toured with the Minus 5 and Mark Eitzel to form the somewhat overwhelming "Magnificent Seven". And now we have Viva Sea-Tac, destined for even further installments, it seems. Why am I droning on about this? Only because it is so wonderful to see Robyn on a stage surrounded by so many talented persons who so obviously admire him. At one point, when they were all playing their guitars at once---Robyn, Peter, Scott, Tim, and Kurt ("Count them...40 strings!")---I was sure the walls were going to come down. [T-shirt caption: "Men with guitars facing north"] Robyn seemed not only comfortable with all this hoopla, but most pleased. It was the kind of evening a man like Himself deserves. Cynthia (temporarily back on the list 'cause she can't keep away) p.s. I believe everyone will have an opportunity to experience something of last night's gig, as the "Viva Sea-Tac Boys" all seem to be working on Robyn's next album together. Should be a doozy, if those performances were any indication. -cp ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Jun 1997 15:02:49 -0700 From: Jeff Barlow Subject: Re: FegFest '97! I suppose I'll delurk for a bit and comment.. It was indeed a fabulous show, probably the best I've ever seen. I found the Youn Fresh Fellows opening with "Ted, Woody, and Junior" particularly inspired. You really don't see many opening acts starting off with one of the headliners own songs. Unfortunately, I had started work at 5 am that morning and probably had one too many beers at the show to compensate. Apologies if my noise offended anyone. I'm usually not like that; I'm usually pretty quiet and respectable. I've found my ten year love for Hitchcock music falling off a bit over the past year; I had lived in a small midwest town where the chances of seeing any kind of a show were pretty small, and the long time period between the last two albums really hurt. Since moving to Seattle though, I've seen two of the best shows ever from any band or person in the last week, and heard Robyn playing some of the best material of his entire career. I'm more than willing to spin copies of any tapes from this show that are treed! Greetings from one of the twin fegs from Portland OR (my twin sister Carole is the more vocal feg; I tend to lurk). First off, I am imploring *anyone* who might have a tape of any of these recent Robyn/Tim shows for a copy. I'm something of a Luddite when it comes to stereo/recording finesse, so I don't have any to trade, but I will gladly send you a fine quality blank tape and a care package of homemade chocolate chip cookies. (I'll gladly throw in some cash to help defray expenses as well). Really! Listening to Robyn and Tim harmonize on "Madonna of the Wasps" made me realize this was something I needed to remember. Also, if anyone taped Tim's opening set (or has the whole shebang on a tape), I would freely kill for that as well. On with the story: I just came back from the Seattle Viva Sea Tac II show, tired and road weary but happy that I managed to snag a groovy purple limited edition "Viva Sea Tac" shirt (lovely little Robyn-penned Space Needle). I didn't copy down the set list (I did meet Simone, and she was furiously writing down songs in a little notebook), so I'll just leave you all with a few impressions: I arrived at the Crocodile Cafe *way* too early, around five o'clock. I ordered a sandwich, then saw two mega-fegs, Lawrence and Sally, amble past. I hadn't met them before, but my sister told me "just look for the guy with the cool Robyn-painted leather jacket." No problem there. Lawrence and Sally actually started to leave, since we had all gotten there so early, but thirty seconds after they left they came marching up the sidewalk carrying--yes!--musical equipment! Robyn, Michele (Robyn's girlfriend) and Tim nonchalantly walked into the cafe and started opening up boxes of t-shirts and chatting with the Croc Powers-That-Be. At this point, I'd completely lost my appetite, and tried to appear calm and collected. Let's just get it out in the open. I've developed a bit of a crush on Tim Keegan over the past week (I'd seen the Eugene and Portland shows), and it was somewhat surreal to try and eat a roast beef sandwich while Robyn (nifty crayon shirt) *and* Tim (boring red athletic shirt) stood inches away. It was almost too much. More stars! Peter Buck (whose wife owns the place, I hear) strolled in, wearing a snappy suit, and nonchalantly picked up the phone behind the counter. It was kind of amusing watching the patrons excitedly whisper, "Hey! That's Peter Buck!" but apparently since Seattle is his home turf, everybody played it cool and casual. Fellow Fegs I Got to Meet: The aforementioned Lawrence and Sally, who were very kind. Other Fegs I met were Bjorn, Jamie (a.ka. Capuchin of the Lost Hard Drive), and Simone. I thought I might have seen John Jones there, but the place was *completely* packed, making Feg-spotting difficult. It's frustrating--sometimes I think I should just carry a placard of all the Northwest feg's names on it so I can finally *meet* everyone. Hey Renee Lynn, were you there? Highlights From the Show (mixed up snippets, as I don't have the set list): Tim and Scott (Scott being of the defunct Young Fresh Fellows) opened with "Ted Woody and Junior." Tim had banana maraca in tow. They both seemed kind of giggly and tried not to laugh at the "cover each other with soap" refrain. Young Fresh Fellows then performed several songs, none of which made any impression on me, but then, I was never a YFF fan. The lead singer, Scott, and the redheaded guitar player (name? sorry) really got into doing Van Halen style "guitar jumps" throughout the performance, which was entertaining in itself. Intermission... "Men with guitars facing north!" Peter Buck, Robyn, Tim, and the Young Fresh Fellow guys all bounded on stage, strapped on the guitars, and started to rock. It was fascinating to see the difference in Robyn when he's with a bunch of other musicians. There was a distinctive energy to the show that just isn't present in Robyn's solo performances. It was very much a guy thing--the "Let's hang out for a week in Seattle and jam with all the local music luminaries!" sort of afterglow in Robyn's face. A male bonding ritual of sorts. It was clear that everyone on stage was having a good time, and the energy of the crowd was deafening. I'm sure fire codes were being violated left and right, the place was so packed. The set list was almost identical to the previous set lists Robyn's done on this tour, but I do remember a few standout things: *No Hendrix covers, which kind of surprised me (though I was secretly glad) * Queen of Eyes: Peter Buck, Robyn, Tim, Scott, and the aforementioned "redheaded guitar player" of YFF lined up in one row and played their guitars *simultaneously* on "Queen of Eyes". "40 strings!" Scott shouted. Oh, man. It was downright religious. The crowd nearly had a simultaneous orgasm. *Clean Steve: Not one of my favorites, but I like how Robyn said, "You could have knocked him down with a Space Needle." Cheers. *In the introduction to a song, Robyn said, "This next song is for Kimberley, Andy and Morris. I hope they don't hear about it." and then launched into a rousing rendition of "Give it to the Soft Boys." Again, fellow Fegs were delighted. * Very little onstage banter. Not surprising--I think Robyn was too concerned with coordinating the seven or so musicians on stage that he didn't have *time* to launch into rambling stories. But I didn't mind--the banter I heard in Eugene and Portland was almost identical anyway, so I didn't feel like I missed much. *Peter Buck isn't looking so hot these days. He remained somewhat lifeless on stage while everyone else was full of vigor. I dunno, maybe that's just his personal style, to rock back and forth slowly while he strums, but the enthusiasm at this performance was such that you'd think he could at least have gotten a little more energetic. Did he have some sort of surgery recently? I thought I heard rumors that several REM members have been falling ill recently, what with brain aneuryisms and surgery and such. *Their rendition of "Chinese Bones" proved that no matter how many times you've heard a certain song, there's something in a live performance that can just add an otherworldly quality to the song. Ethereal and breathtaking. *Only one Homer song this time around--Robyn sang with Tim on "Superkeen" and seemed to be trying to make Tim laugh by being a bit devilish. "Robyn's Superkeen!" Tim sang. * My experience was marred by some asshole photographer who pushed his way in front of me, didn't say excuse me, and proceeded to loudly chomp gum and take a zillion flash pictures. All while "Madonna of the Wasps" was playing, too. He then stood his ground and didn't move for the rest of the show. I wanted to accidentally stomp on his foot, but didn't. *Cones! Capuchin grabbed two cones, the greedy bastard. :-) One of his had little Anubis/Thoth-like creatures scribbled all around, with one of them saying, "Say! I remember Sea-Tac!" Another had little Space Needles drawn on it. I don't know how many cones there were for this show--maybe 10? That's all for now. I'm sure a more technically accurate set list of the Sea Tac show will be posted soon. I'm looking forward to seeing other views on the Viva Sea-Tac show. In closing, a final plea for a tape of any of these recent Robyn/Tim shows! I will trade for cookies and cash! Thanks.
