Could it possibly be just a case of over-saturation? You know what they say about too much of a good thing... The way I see it, Robyn Hitchcock's prolific output is a boon for rabid fans like myself as well as a bane for most potential fans out there. His CDs usually have a number of inferior cuts (I know that's a subjective claim, but I think it does have some warrant), and he is continually putting out compilations of other songs that didn't make the cut for one reason or another. Granted, some of these leftovers are better than what appears on the major CDs--but many are merely ok. But when I look at the last few CDs I see some really great things--different things--that only pique my interest. For instance, I thought "Sinister", "Heliotrope" and "Man With A Woman's Shadow" were all superb tracks--some of his best and most inventive stuff ever. And, like I've said before, I still think "Respect" was Robyn's biggest flub--songs like "Alright Yeah", "Live-In Years" and "Bright Fresh Flower" would have made it perhaps his best "band" album ever. Having heard a few of the new songs I have hope that the forthcoming soundtrack will be a pleasant surprise. I guess I just have a hard time calling RH "standard"... he is so different than everything else out there----and yet he always is different in a way that keeps true to his identity. His lyrics are meaningful, clever, intelligent, witty, deep, poetic--and his tunes are consistently pleasing and well-crafted. I think one of the drawbacks to this list is that we are all so over-saturated with his every move and so quick to get tapes of each new song as they roll out of the womb, so to speak--that when the albums come out they can be at least a bit anticlimactic. I know I felt that way with "Moss Elixir". I'd already heard everything -- so nothing was new in the way that "Perspex Island" or "Eye" was new... and it'll probably be the same way with the upcoming album. But that doesn't mean that I don't want to hear those new songs... :) Anyway, hang in there Terry. Put his stuff aside for awhile--I'll bet you'll come back to it with renewed interest and a rejuvenated appreciation... A quick first reaction report on the SF show. I'm sure others will do a better and more complete job -- I don't even have the set list. 1- Public thanks to Mark for driving the bus, and for introducing me to San Francisco's exotic gourmet ethnic cuisine. 2- Many thanks to all the Fegs who showed up. I can't imagine a nicer group of people. As well as Mark and myself, Tom/Coleen and Russ/Anita it was great to meet Stephen (Steven?) who had been to both the Mill Valley and Sacramento shows, Carrie who has promised to rejoin the list and the effervescent Sydney. It was also great to meet some familiar faces from the last show; John who traded cones *at least* twice (but it was worth it - he ended up with the easily the best one I've seen) and Chad/Lesley for whom 20 tanks are barely sufficient. We also discovered that the Carrie's friends (I'm *really* sorry - I forgot your names already) also read the list. Hope you enjoy the Gormengast books! 3- What a great show! Easily one of the best of (my) recent memory. He was clearly enjoying himself, on fine vocal form and ready to attempt some guitar work that was "risky". 4- The advertised support act didn't show, which just added to the spontaneity of the evening. Tim "young robyn" Keegan did a fine job of filling the slot. Robyn introduced him personally and then watched from the side. 5- By all rights "Ted" the sound guy should be looking for a new job this morning. The evening was peppered with requests to tweak the sound. 6- Blinking rate was less than usual. (maybe he was feeling more confident on "home" territory) 7- I could swear he's been reading the list. - He is clearly *not* fed up with playing! - Not much between song banter :( - What banter there was certainly sounded very spontaneous - He deliberately and clearly sang "Bucky the pig" (Mark and I looked at each other and nearly fell off our chairs--Afterwards Russ denied this ever happened. I think he must have been in the restroom or something...) 7a- A very varied and adventurous set. I'm sure someone will post it. Nice mix of brand new, recent, covers and oldies. Loved the new songs: "Gene Hackman", "Jewels for Sophia" and "Dark Princess" (were there others?). Lots of highlights from the catalog. ("Raymond Chandler Evening" has changed key, according to Mark. "Must be that low E"). "Arnold Layne" was way cool. "Acid Bird" was a nice surprise but *two* Hendrix covers? "Wind Cries Mary", OK -- but "Are You Experienced"?! Hmm. 8- Feg T-shirts? I'm on the digest so I missed Tom's post on the topic. However those who met pre-show saw my DIY version. By the magic of digital technology I have changed the "fegMANIA!" logo (scanned fresh, not the lo-rez web version) into "fegMANIAX" and printed it onto iron-on transfer paper (my little Cannon color printer does this automagically, reversing the image etc.) I then applied this to a plain white T-shirt (the logo is about four inches long, on the front left). Much to my surprise it works really well. If anyone else wants to do this I'd be happy to send you the graphic. If you lack a suitable printer I can even print a transfer for you (as long as I don't end up in a mass production job!) The nice thing about this technology is that you can then add your favorite Robyn quote/lyric on the back of the shirt (mine happens to say "Please don't call me Reg--it's not my name"). Pictures are equally easy. Every one can be unique. It doesn't have to be a T-shirt either - you could apply it to whatever article of clothing you feel deserves the "treatment". I suppose I'd better go catch up on some of the work I missed yesterday. I hope to read some more reports of this (and the other Bay Area shows) when the digests finally catch up. Date: Thu, 5 Jun 97 12:06:03 -0700 From: Tom Clark "Bonde M'Teko" Regarding last night's show, I must agree it was the most enjoyable performance I've seen in quite a while. Robby-baby seemed pretty energized and happy to be there amongst friends (I really think he's developed a nice "I remember you from all the other gigs and all I need to do is look you right in the eye just long enough to make you uncomfortable" type of thing with his fans, but I digress). Fashion report: While introducing Tim, he was wearing a really neet-o Crayola Crayon shirt. For the main set, a kinda limey (no pun intended) shirt w/ black vest. Encore - that brownish thing with salamanders all over it. At one point I turned to my wife and asked "Do you think I could get my hair to look like his?" To which she had no hesitation in replying "I was wondering the same thing!" The sound wasn't too great, unfortunately. Ted the sound man was smoking crack or something last night. Not only were Robyn and Tim constantly asking for monitor tweaks, but during "Beautiful Queen" there was a nasty feedack problem right around Robyn's midrange. Now I shall comment: On 6/5/97 10:36 AM, Nick Winkworth muttered: > >2- Many thanks to all the Fegs who showed up Yes Yes! I must say these gatherings bring a huge ray of sunshine into my otherwise dreary existence. It was a pleasure meeting Steven, Carrie, and Sydney for the first time. Hopefully we can gather again soon! > > >7- I could swear he's been reading the list. > - What banter there was certainly sounded very spontaneous He improvised a Philip Marlowe story during the middle of "Raymond Chandler Evening" that would have made Chandler himself proud. Marlowe was driving around drinking Jim Beam with a windup gramaphone strapped to the roof playing "Caravan" ("They didn't have Walkmans in those days, kids"). He stops in front of a white adobe house on Mulholland that has bright lights pouring out of it, but no movement inside. He gets out and leans against the car - waiting. He's going to have to wait for a long time - it's his house. > - He deliberately and clearly sang "Bucky the pig" (Mark and I > looked at each other and nearly fell off our chairs--Afterwards > Russ denied this ever happened. I think he must have been in the > restroom or something...) We almost came to blows on this one. I was sitting not more than 12 feet away from The Man Himself and he clearly mouthed "Mucky". You guys in the back of the room didn't hear it right (re: Ted's crack habit). > >7a- ... *two* >Hendrix covers? "Wind Cries Mary", OK -- but "Are You Experienced"?! >Hmm. I would have given up "Mary" for another original, but "Experienced" was way cool. He pulled off one of those wicked solos that seem to go nowhere and everywhere at the same time. I had to close my eyes and just listen for a while. Same with Arnold Layne. After he finished it he fiddled around with one of his pedals and realized he had it set wrong. So he did the solo all over again and ran it right into "Are You Experienced". that's it from Cupertino folks. I really thought we should meet…I mean, after all, we *were* in the same building. :) Time was marching on, things were getting packed up, and it didn’t look good. It was time for *drastic* measures. “Would you please tell Robyn that there’s a Hedblade here to see him?” I asked with a straight face to a road crew guy. “A Head Blade?” he shot back with raised eyebrows. “Yes.” “And he will know what this means?” he asked. “Of course.” I said with mild indignance. The guy chats with Steve, Robyn’s manager (with a few glances my way), and comes back to let me know he’d sent it through proper channels. “You’re WHO, exactly?” Steve asks me with a *piercing* gaze (seeing if I would flinch, I think). “I’m Sydney.” I said with conviction (and trying not to lie a second time). “We’re on the fegmaniax list and we’d like to meet Robyn.” Robyn appears momentarily in front of the place to sign a few autographs for waiting fans. “YOU’RE a Hedblade?” he asks me. “No, Robyn, actually not. I lied to get you out here (as he's signing my ME disc). I’m sorry. But Jay Hedblade one of my best friends. Does that count?” He smiled (to my relief!), shook my hand and said, “Ah, Jay Hedblade. I spent considerable time with him in Chicago. Please tell him I said hello.” So Jay? Of course I was predisposed to musical bliss given that I was seeing Robyn for the first and second times. Hey, I'm biased and I'm *comfortable* with it! Got a problem with that?! ;) A real bonus was that the shows were very different from each other. About 50% overlap in the set. Perhaps Stephen and Eddie want to chime in about how Mill Valley compared. OK, the Sac set list and a few impressions/highlights of both shows. 6/3/97 Sacramento (if I butchered any of these titles, *please* let me know--I'm still a trainee) I Dream of Antwoman Wide Open Star Serpent at the Gates of Wisdom The Yip Song (please welcome back Tim's brother Tim...) Madonna of the Wasps Jewels for Sophia Acid Bird Dark Princess Chinese Bones You and Oblivion Arnold Layne Freeze Kingdom of Love (encore) The Speed of Things Queen of Eyes Queen Elvis Beautiful Queen I Often Dream of Trains 1. The opener in Sac was Anton Barbeau and Drag Team Three, a local band. I thought they were good and would see them again. A bit folky with some Beatle-esque tunes. And if I may share, I believe it was dot Chris who said he didn't *want* to like them, but did. :) Anton's a big Robyn fan and was at the SF show the next night. 2. I was very impressed with Tim, and would have liked to have seen more. I'm still kicking myself for not picking up that single while I had the easy opportunity (twice). Drat! Now, I'm not a guitar geek (see dot Chris for that), but his playing was strong and polished, if relatively simple. His voice was beautiful...strong, great range, and he and Robyn sounded so good together! Tim was confident in his message *and* his delivery. I was charmed, to say the least. 3. Robin put on a great show! Gotta share this... He took the stage and said, "It's been about seven years since I've played in Sacramento. I'm sure that in that time every cell in my body has replaced itself, and I'm a completely different person." ...I was DYING! :) 4. I was a little startled to be as taken with Robyn as I was. The quality of his voice was supurb, mesmerizing. Very strong at first, but...well, yes...weakened just a tad as the evening wore on. (Note: Tim seemed to tone it down a bit on the high notes in SF the next night...voice fatigue?) But Robyn's guitar playing! Woah... Those graceful spider fingers were impressive in Sac, but waited until SF to really shine. Hendrix was showing more than in just those two tunes... In Sac, perhaps Robyn had a few playing bloopers (Chris says 5 and I have no reason not to believe him), but all I saw was a little chuckle at one of them. He *did* seem to enjoy himself in Sacramento, but in SF he was really in his element, with an adoring and vocal crowd! Blinkercize was alive and well at both shows. 5. I may have noted a little of the father/son thing between Robyn and Tim that was discussed on the list previously, but IMHO Tim held his own. 6. Regarding the Robynspeak, I expected to hear more given the discussion on this list, so obviously he's toned it down. After one bit of banter in Sacramento about careening down the highway, smashing into a billion pieces, each piece growing horns, etc., Robyn got a good laugh from the audience. He looked up sincerely and said, "I knew you'd understand." (!!!) 7. Last but not least, you N. Cal (and Reno ) Fegs are gems! After a few minutes it was obvious that Robyn, his manager, and the employees of the venue knew we were there but didn't care. We just sat unobtrusively in the very back corner of the hall. I immediately ran out to the car, got my trusty recorder, ran back in, and began taping. I know we missed alot of the soundcheck, but here is what I got: acoustic: Where Do You Go When You Die? (with Tim) Madonna of the Wasps (with Tim) electric excerpts from: She Doesn't Exist The Lizard Cathedral of The Mind Acid Bird (with Tim on acoustic, Robyn on electric) The 3 songs with Tim are complete songs, the others are just Robyn singing a verse or two before moving on to the next. We met Tim after the soundcheck, when he needed a blank tape to give to the soundman, and lo and behold I happened to have one. The show: There was only ONE cone. Robyn hadn't had time to draw more. Grant from the list got it. Maybe he will tell you what it looks like. Tim went on at about 8:40pm: Unfun Thin (by request from me!) altho i'm betting he was gonna play it anyway Shallow End Soul Food Shopping List New Song Overcoming Grim Realities Back From Disneyland Single Superkeen. Robyn came out about 9:30pm or so, dressed in that cool lizard-and-target shirt: acoustic: Gene Hackman Lysander Balloon Man Trilobyte Madonna Of The Wasps (w/ Tim) De Chirico St. (w/ Tim) Jewels For Sophia (w/ Tim) Beautiful Girl I'm Only You electric: She Doesn't Exist I Am Not Me Airscape Freeze encore (acoustic i think): Elizabeth Jade (w/ Tim) Queen Elvis (w/ Tim) electric: Beautiful Queen (w/Tim) I Often Dream of Trains ONE MORE ENCORE: Dark Princess (w/ Tim) I think the total time was under 90min. The set was pretty normal, nothing unusually great, all stuff I'd seen and heard before, with the exception of the new songs (Sophia, Jade) which I thought were great, but not sure how I would like them solo. They worked great with Tim's harmonies and extra guitar parts. Having Tim around during Robyn's set was the real treat of the show for me. His vocals and guitar work complement Robyn incredibly well, and gave new life to some of the songs. The only interesting banter came from my friend Butch's request for "Arms of Love", to which Robyn replied that it was originally called "Arm of Love" which he thought was too dark, but now in retrospect he wishes he had left it like that. But anyway, the gist of it was that it was too twee for him, now. Someone also requested "St. Petersburg", which evoked a facial contortion that looked like a grimace (the facial expression, not the mc donaldland character), and he replied that playing that song would be akin to ordering a nice sandwich with redicchio (??) cheese and endives, and getting a scoop of ice cream with meat gravy topping!! After the show, Tim came out and talked to us for awhile. He was helpful in facilitating a not-your-usual-request-for-an-autograph favor from Robyn. A few months ago I had a CD of Mossy Liquor (and some other recent vinyl) pressed up for my own listening pleasure. With Tim interceding for me, Robyn labelled it!! Very nice. I had been wanting a Robyn-penned title on the CD itself for quite sometime. Robyn was very kind, saying "it's my pleasure" when I told him how grateful I was. While signing, Robyn answered various questions from all of us who hung out after the gig. The new live album is not coming out till next year (Jan or Feb). My brash pal Butch and some others commented on the fact that the song "Dark Princess" actually sounds like "Duck Princess" and wondered if it had anything to do with the upside-down duck on the Moss Elixir album and T-shirt. Robyn replied that he and Tim have been making a conscious effort to enunciate their words, but at times its just not enough. He said he could never right a song called "Duck Princess": "Its a matter of taste, mate.", was the actual quote i think. I snagged a setlist too (what a night!) only to realize after getting home that it was not penned by Robyn. I only grabbed it because I love Robyn's handwriting as much as some of his songs. I guess either Tim or Steve (Robyn's manager) wrote it. By the way, it was Steve's birthday. Is he a new manager?? I had never seen him before. He seems like a very nice person as well. Steve informed Paul (are you out there Paul) that the Viva Seatac gig (next Friday) is indeed at The Croc in Seattle. Robyn stated that they will begin work next week on the new studio album, but I think that info has been posted already. Do I see a movie premier in our futures? :) Actually a movie premier party is something we've been discussing. Nick W. and I talked of simultaneous worldwide parties all hooked together via internet connections and CU-SeeMe (we are comptuter geeks after all). This is entirely doable and should be thought about by anyone who was planning a premiere party. How about letting some of the graphic design geniuses on this list take a crack at coming up with something? Set a deadline (two weeks?) and anyone with the knack and spare time can design something up and email to a central person with some web page room to spare. Then let the list vote on it. If we stick with small graphics (gifs or jpegs < 20K) or just descriptions, I'd be happy to host these at the Virtual Cone Museum. Just a thought.
