Lest you all think that Mr Gloster is a self obsessed congealment of vanity for blowing his own trumpet in this way, let me reassure you that both of these musical gems - but particularly "Mondays Lunch" have attained the coveted "four bells" approval rating from yours truly. If you have any idea of what it takes to put something like this together you will be amazed at the professional job Mark has done. This is truly the work of an obsessed man (in the best way!). The quality of the artwork and musical production is matched by the originality of the songs. The fact that some of us spent so much time discussing what "influences" we could hear, tells you that this is definitely not derivative music, but a truly original voice. ("Quirky"? Yes, I like "quirky".) Trust me. This is better than 90% of the CDs you are going to buy this year. But how will new fegs be able to join the list? you weren't paying attention, susan.... the primary reason for doing this is not to deflect spam, but to prevent malicious people from forging subscription requests for some poor sod who doesn't even know who robyn hitchcock is. here's how it works: all subscription requests are sent to me for approval. i send a note to the address asking them to confirm that they really want to be on the list. if they respond in the affirmative, i subscribe them. if i never hear back from them, then i don't subscribe them. people who want on will be able to get on. those who were the victim of a mass subscription attack will get one note from me instead of a flood of mail from fegmaniax. as far as spammers go, my assumption is that most will not bother to respond to my confirmation query and, thus, will not be subscribed. i realize that may be a faulty assumption, but, as you say, i can't tell a proto-feg from a spammer if their e-mail address is valid. (in case anyone is wondering, there were about five bogus requests per day last week. since these subs result in a lot of bounced mail, i was wasting a fair amount of time cleaning up after the mess. i'd rather take the time to make sure that the request was valid up-front than deal with the mess.) woj ------------------------------ Subject: Thanks, Woj... Don't worry, I have a good attendence record to fall back on... I suppose I should reference all the responses I have to other postings but that would mean slogging through my archives which is full of millions of other things like KIDSPHERE and EDNET (I really must unsubscribe to those...). Anyway...it is such a beautiful, sunny, green globe of frogs kind of day that I listened to that CD this morn for the first time in a while. While it may be detrimental to say so I don't listen to RH every day (although there are always songs going through my head) and I always find spring/summer to be heavy RH rotation time for me. Does anyone else experience this phenomenon? Certain seasons for certaion music? As I was saying, I'll be more concientious in the future to directly reference postings I respond to but for today bare with me. Most of you know what you've written anyway so you'll know if I'm talking about you. I'll just go by subjects I found interesting: Throwing Muses: House Tornado is a classic. I like everything they've done to varying degrees, though "University" is kind of blah. Havn't yet bought "Limbo." "H&M" is okay. My Music Taste: I listed some of my favorite albums and someone responded about my modernism. You're right. I'm modernist to a fault and unapologetic about it. Mind you, I do love the Beatles (Revolver is in my top 25, no doubt), Bowie, Dylan, Neil Young, Stones, Van Morrisson, etc (don't like the Dead, though) and can listen to that stuff every day, but I don't find myself pulling out "Harvest" as much as "Slanted & Enchanted." I'm 26 and my music taste has been formed over the past dozen years and the stuff that is mosy meaningful to me is, for the most part, modern. Not that there's anything wrong with that. It is pointless to make those lists, but fun. There ia a lot I neglected: The Vaselines, "Gentlemen"/Afghan Wigs, "Reckoning"/REM, ... The movie: my idea for RH to do a Disney film called "That Darn Vegetarian Cat" was--Surprise!!--a joke. NCAA Tourney: I was rooting for Kentucky myself, but really don't give a squat. Pleased that baseball season is here, though I'm not a baseball fan. I'm a Cubs fan... I've never really associated RH fans with sports fans. I guess it goes with my severe upbringing in Jamestown, New York (where everyone has a Natalie Merchant story...)which taught me that everyone is one thing or another. What is RH's favorite MFL/MLB/NHL team? He probably doesn't care but you never can tell. I hope he likes the Dolphins. This is swell. I literally know no other person in the flesh(besides my friend in the UK) who is a RH fan or owns any of his CDs. This is the first place I've ever been able to converse with others and I am rather pleased about it. While we're on the subject of praise I will say that it's incredible fun and has provided me, a secluded and deprived little Fegmaniac, with a wealth of info. Now that I've finished grovelling...is it just me or do most compilations come at the end of a person's career, or as an act of desperation when they've run out of things to say (Van Halen, for intsance). I AM NOT SUGGESTING THAT'S WHAT'S HAPPENING HERE!! Not at all. I--We--know better. Few have so consistently put out so much worthwhile music FOR SO LONG than RH and ME shows there is still a lot he can do. But it does creep me out a bit. When you see successive live/comp lps it reeks of labels losing faith or filling out a contract. I know that isn't what's happening here but just the idea. Will these pre A&M tracks attract a larger audience? I don't think so. A successful comp has to be widely accessible, or exhaustive, and lets face it most of these songs will not appeal to mainstream listeners. It is, simply, preaching to the converted. The A&M comp was a missed opportunity. I don't like the phrase "RH rediscovery." That implies he's been away. I don't know what the answer is. I'm starting to feel like many of you in that it's a waste of time. Why would we buy it if we already have the songs? If he had been out of it for a while, or quit, than maybe...I think the time is ripe for a Replacements or Uncle Tupelo retrospective. There is an opprtunity there. New and Recomended: the new Matthew Sweet cd is just fine. Almost zero departure from "100% Fun" but so what. He is what he is, and he has my favorite pop voice. Knowing nothing about voices, what would he be classified as? "Spiders" by Space is a blast. Fabulous new band. Just kinda ran out of things to say...
