In reverse order: It's "you whatnot me": one word. Trust me. "Whatnot" means "a small, generally flimsy piece of furniture with no discernible use other than providing a place to stand equally useless ornaments"; it also means thingummy, doodah, whatchamacallit, howsyourfather. Or "something". "RH never a musical innovator": this supports the argument that there was a major break (as well as much continuity) between the Soft Boys and the Egyptians. Thanks to RH's collaboration with ol' Kimberley, _ACoB_ has musical innovation coming out of its nostrils; even _UM_ has some fairly extreme moments (the intro of "Old Pervert" and the two-bass lineup on "Insanely Jealous" spring to mind). This may also be why some fegs find the early SBs stuff a bit too angular & I find albums like _Elements of Light_ a bit too tidy. (OK, I confess, I'm the Feg Who Doesn't Particularly Like "Airscape". Shock, horror...) Soft Boys Barrett sighting: "Gigolo Aunt" (introduced by RH as "Moving around in a trenchcoat"). But I guess you knew about that one. Intrigued to hear that _Perspex Island_ and _Queen Elvis_ were RH's big sellers in the US. I never even saw either album when it came out; I've since seen _PI_, once, on import. I'm just glad the UK and US are back in sync for things like _ML_ (a far superior album to _ME_). Just got back from NYC a while ago, and I'm suffering from what's probably acute exhastion. Too many nights of severe abuse and trying to carry on as though I'm younger than I am have taken their toll. Work is going to be a joy tomorrow. Anyhow: I cought both Friday night shows at the Factory, as well as the early Saturday show. I wrote down the set lists for the Friday shows as best I could, but packed it in for the latter show. This is how it came out (I think--correct me if I'm wrong). That's the gist, though, as far as I can remember it/read the chicken scratch I jotted on the back of the John Cale postcards that were all over the place. Met Deni before the first show, during their sound check. She's very very pleasant. Very poistive about Robyn and working with him. The two of them had a good raport on stage, though at times it almost seemed as though RH wanted to work alone (?). Having to incorporate another musician into the works seemed to put him out a bit. Maybe the solo tour has done that to him. . . All in all, though, the shows were fantastic. I'm glad to have been able to see as many as I did. Only met one Feg, though--the great Woj himself. Very nice. I drifted around the floor for a while (to the right of the stage, just behind the pillar) and took some pictures. Hopefully they'll come out--I'm getting them done tomorrow. The rest of the time I lurked behind the sound board in the balcony. I _was_ going to tape the show, but the person due to lend me the deck to do it on backed out at the last second (yellow dog bastard). Sorry to anyone on list I mentioned that to. . . I know there's tapes of all the shows, but I doubt they'll circulate. About the comp. They're going about this all wrong. They should jump on the band wagon and do a _box_set_. Studio tracks, demos, outtakes, radio shows, live stuff, etc. All packaged nicely with a handsome book full of RH's stories and paintings. Petition that to Rhino (or Warner Bros. for that matter--they've got the money to invest. . .) Anyways, I've rambled on too long already. Hey kids-- Rex works for a film exhibition company, otherwise known as a movie theatre chain, or a "house of ill repute". Thing is, we're the only real nationwide chain of theatres specializing in, um, specialized fare--we own "arthouses", repertory theatres, and the like. The company is also owned by the same international conglomerate that owns Orion, who's distributing "Storefront Hitchcock". Based on some scuttlebutt I picked up on at a meeting this morning, we should be getting a print of "Storefront" to privately screen for our film buyers soon. I'm part of the company's core personnel and my office is closer to the screening room than anybody's... which means I'll probably be one of the first hardcore Fegs to get a look at the thing. Here goes . . . It seems to me that there are still a lot of Robyn rarities worth hearing, but I think the 1981-1987 is pretty well taped-out. No doubt someone will correct me by pointing out that Robyn's best song ever [fill in the blank] still hasn't come out. But there have already been two (long) CD's of rarities from this period, plus bonus tracks on each of the Rhino reissues. There may be a couple of good songs left, but I can't imagine it's more than a couple. That said, it seems that the A&M period (1988-1993) still has a variety of riches to offer. The Greatest Hits CD only scratched the surface of Robyn's B-sides and promo-only tracks. B-sides and promo tracks not on the GH package include: "Watch Your Intelligence", "The Live In Years", "A Day In the Life", "Creatures of Light", "As Lemons Drop", "The Ghost in You", "One Long Pair of Eyes" (acoustic version), "Linden Arden", "The Ghost Ship" (full-length version), "Driving Aloud" (alternate version), plus probably others I'm forgetting, or just don't know about. Also, as I understand it, there were a bunch of acoustic covers recorded as possible b-sides for Respect singles. A&M must also have a lot of live stuff in the can--it would be great to hear the full acoustic set from McCabe's guitar shop in 1988 that produced "The Ghost in You", and "More Than This", or a live-set from the acoustic "Respect" tour. I realize that there's not much chance of this stuff ever getting released officially by A&M, since I'm sure Robyn is a dead issue to them. However, they did release the Greatest Hits CD, plus their production and promotion costs would be very low--so maybe there's a chance. Anyhow it can't hurt to ask--you can e-mail their suggestion box at amrecords@boxtop.com . Perhaps if they're flooded with e-mail they might consider it . . . I know we've been over this before, but if everyone (including Robyn, it seems) is so damned interested in releasing "Product," then why not these items that are of genuine interest and were once officially sanctioned? There are also PLENTY of items that were left off of the Ryko and Rhino re-issues from singles, flexis, EPs, etc. to put together another rarities compilation. Check the following list and note that these are strictly items that include the eras previously covered by Ryko and Rhino. Perhaps these two fine labels could join forces for a one off compilation under the moniker RYNO! Is this stupid? Of course it is! No more stupid, however, than the flood of half-baked ideas for releases cooked up over the past year or so (including A&M's greatest hits which managed to convert zero fans and provide hard core collectors with about 50% of our wants / needs). With all respect to Jim and the fine folks at Rhino who've been nothing but downright WONDERFUL to all of us on the list and myself personally, I worry that Uncorrected Personality Traits will suffer in the sales department. Even as a rather rabid fan, I'd sooner spend my money on any one of Rhino's hundreds of killer titles. That said, anyone who doesn't own ALL of Rhino's re-issued titles should go out an get them now!
