The reason you haven't heard it is that it apparently was mostly in use (I believe) up until sometime in the 1800s, and though you've lived in Scotland all your life, I'm guessing you haven't been there -that- long :). Note use of the word possible in the above paragraph :). We did also find an Anglo-Saxon word that was a possible root, come to think of it, but I don't remember now what it was. Sigh. Back to the OED. As for Tolkien, I didn't know that. How odd. It seems sort of like a strange endeavor, considering the polyglot nature of the English language, almost along the lines of the fellow who wrote the novel without using the letter "e". Oh yeah. Duh, I knew that, NOT :). And a brief cruise through the electronic OED (one nice thing about the university account is we can access it free :)) gives this: feg(e, fegg, Sc. and north, forms of FIG (and that's all it sez) As for fey- it gives the root as Common Teutonic; OE (which I assume stands for Old English). But that's immaterial, as my real error was in completely misremembering the conversation. The word that relates to fag is actually "fay" (obs. meaning- "faith"). Whew. Looking forward to meeting more fegs at the show. I would say the Friday show is the most desirable especially since I have a gig that y'all should come to on the night of the Saturday show. :) I recently finished my mix tape of the best songs of 1996 and it is so slamming. I am incredibly proud of it. It was the king of mix tape that you really labor over, listen to, retape, etc. If anyone wants to trade, this is a great way to be exposed to some great music....... I also would like to quickly request the presence of any NY fegs at the Favorite Color's upcoming show... this Sunday at THE MERCURY LOUNGE at 10:30. Sigh. Back to the OED. According to Chambers, it is 'fey' (same spelling) in Middle English from something like 'faega' in Old Eng (a.k.a. Anglo-Saxon). It seems to be another word which survived mainly in Scotland, and it isn't related to 'faery'. It means something like 'in high spirits' or 'running mad'. > As for Tolkien, I didn't know that.
