Well, this I do not know. But earlier today, my laddie friend and I went on a search and turned up several interesting things. Apparently, one possible root word for the term "fag" as applied to homosexuals (American usage in this context apparently predates the British) is actually the Yiddish word "fegala", which is also the root word for "fey", which also has connotations of "fairy, or "from the fairy realm". As for "feg", it is a Scottish variant for "fig". Fig of course has several usages, the obvious one being of course the fruit (I just love how this all turns in on itself :)). Also, something of little worth, as in "I don't care a fig", which may have come from the usage of fig as a synonym for counterfeit farthings. The archaic exclamation "fegs" is not related to this, but rather to an earlier root, the same German root that gives us the Yiddish "fegala", and was a mild epithet along the lines of "marry". The closest equivalent would I guess be "faith", which also comes from the same root (think "fairy realms", things otherworldly, etc.). Quite an interesting troupe. Poor souls; had extended technical difficulties before they could get into their first song but bravely forged ahead and won the respect of quite a few of us in the crowd. Interesting songs. Sort of a mix of bleakness and cheer, like trying to see the bright side of hopelessness? I don't know. Hard to judge a band with challenging lyrics on one hearing. Well,I'll be seeing you tonight at the show in Athens--for anyone who's heading out and hasn't already left. I can't promise a timely review of the evening, as I've still got my reactions to the Atlanta show with Billy Bragg on file somewhere (but never sent to the list). Anyway, enjoy the show tonight. She was screaming and punching him square in the face like a boxer. Then she picked up one of those orange construction cones and started beating him over the head with it! It was a sign, I tell you! A sign!! lj ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Feb 1997 15:28:06 +1300 (NZDT) From: james.dignan@stonebow.otago.ac.nz (James Dignan) Subject: kinks sacrilege (no RH) > cover of "Waterloo Sunset" was--far as he knew--the only cover of that tune > in existence. I first got interested in Kinks music through, of all things, the British children's TV programme (and musical spin-off) the Wombles! When I was very young I was a Wombles fan, and the music put out by the Wombles musical group (written by Mike Batt) was often very Kinks influenced. For example, the track "Wimbledon Sunset". It made me track down the song that had inspired it! I am embarrassed, but I feel so much better for getting that guilty secret out!
