Unless my ISP has fucked up, which can happen, I think something is wrong. Starting right after the live broadcast on Saturday, I have not seen one single post to the Robyn mailing list. Are we all gathering up our thoughts on the broadcast? Here are my comments. I was very disappointed. Of all the Robyn shows I was ever at, 30+, this was the worst. Not just because it was non-visible, but I didn't like the way they broadcast it. It was cut, right? What show lasts only an hour? Myself I think it's more that it's so obviously a Barrett-styled song, not so much that he is singing like him. I think the closest he comes to sounding like Syd vocally may be "Trilobyte", because he's singing in a lower range than usual on that song, so it sounds more like Syd's voice. > rh does a lot of other chameleon vocals too. i've > heard the vocals on somewhere apart likened to both lennon and bowie. I hear the Lennon, but Bowie? Again, I would argue that "Executioner" is a closer Lennon vocal than "Somewhere Apart". > i think syd's voice on dark globe sounds like robyn's (if such a backwards > comparison can be made!) Yeah, but you miss the catchy slide part that's on the studio version. To me it has a rather transformative effect similar to the part on Alright, Yeah. I seem to diverge from the rest of the list, though, in my appreciation for overproduction. If so, maybe we can get together before the show. If you need directions to the Bluebird, ask me. I called at noon today and got reservations easily. I have no idea if the club (which is teeny-tiny) has reserved all the tables yet. They suggested I arrive and claim my table by 9:00 (show starts at 9:30 CST). Anyway, they told me that there's always "standing room" in the back and at the bar, so even if all the reserved stuff is gone, if you get there early and get in line, you should stand a good chance of seeing the show. Since I've subsided on a diet of tapes from listmembers (thanks, everybody!) since 1992, getting my Robyn fix in the flesh is a euphoric prospect. I wonder what made him so reserved. Enjoy, Will ... I just got off the phone with Robyn. We had a nice chat though I thought he was more reserved than usual. ... He seemed quite taken a back that not only did I have all his albums (Softboys, Egyptians, solos) but that I had spent the weekend immersed in them preparing for the interview. I've heard him speak at panels at music conferences before and he's always been quite comic and irreverant. He seemed so humble today. He said he hoped all the old farts from Athens who hadn't been out in years would turn up for his show. I told him that he had a new generation of fans. I mentioned discussions that pop up on R.E.M. discussion groups (particularly since most of his work has been reissued) and that even 14 years olds from Indiana were turned on to him. He said "Oh dear, I hope they listen with a chaperone." I don't think I undercovered anything terribly earthshattering but it's for the local weekly music rag, Flagpole, so we talked more about his Athens' connections. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Feb 97 11:06:00 -0800 From: Russ Reynolds Subject: Glass Flesh Just wanted to say that anyone who's hedging about plunking down the dough for Glass Flesh should go ahead and do it. This is a damn fine CD! My particular fave is "Clean Steve (Knack Dennis)" by [I forget--don't have the CD with me] which I believe outshines the original. "Love" with the female vocal makes me melt. The punked out "Another Bubble" makes me pogo. The hillbilly "Brenda's Iron Sledge" makes my thumbs smell.* And the B Movie version of "Balloon Man" is just brilliant. I think the fact that Vic Chesnutt's contribution ranks just middle-of-the-pack (IMO) speaks volumes for the talent of the folks on this list. Excellent packaging, too.
