We've got two of them- ASCAP and BMI. Don't ask me what the difference is, I don't really know, except that I think ASCAP is quite a bit larger. Love on ya, Susan P.S. In unrelated news- I've been hearing good things about an Australian band called The Triffids and want to check them out. Recommendations, anyone? P.P.S. In sort of related to Robyn news- I've recently started subscribing to the McLibel newsletter, which for those of you unfamiliar contains information related to the libel suit McDonald's brought against a London environmentalist group (which they are winning! yay!). Today's batch of news related to environmentalists' and local activists' (so far successful) efforts to prevent the demolition of the White Lion Pub in East Grinstead to make way for a Mickey D's drive through. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Feb 1997 21:47:25 -0600 (CST) From: Truman Peyote Subject: Re: RH Movie Name On Thu, 6 Feb 1997, Terrence M Marks wrote: > I heard that the working title for the movie was > "Storefront Hitchcock", which strikes me as a *VERY* bad name for > it. I reccomend "Return of the Frog Queen" by Jeremy Enigk. It's one of the best albums that I got lately. Better than Robyn's A&M stuff and whose lyrics resemble Syd Barrett and whose arrangements resemble The High Llamas. Buy it. Please. Terry ------------------------------ From: Terrence M Marks Date: Fri, 7 Feb 1997 01:10:12 -0500 (EST) Subject: Reccomendations/Requests (Other Artists) 1) Does anyone have anything by the High Llamas other than Gideon Gaye (or, for that matter, Sean O'Hagan's High Llamas album) 2) Does anyone have anyhting by the Cleaners from Venus? I remember reading about them in an old post...I don't think that any of the local music stores have them, but I'll check again... 3) Is Vic Chesnutt's previous work/his work with Brute anyhting like About to Choke? How does it compare? I'd just like to strongly reccomend the following albums: (Check them out if you like..please) Jeremy Enigk's "Return of the Frog Queen" (THis is the third time I've raved about it on this list... It's by the former lead singer of Sunny Day Real Estate) NeoPseudo's "Laughing Symbols" (Includes listmember Kevin Slick. This is just plain good. Soft rock with interesting arrangements and an occasional woodwind section. Will be included on Gloss Fish. Vaguely reminiscent of the Bonzo Dog Band at times..) The Favourite Colour's "Colour Out of Space" (Includes Matrix. Will be on Gloss Fish. A low $8 for a very good album. I'm not that great at music reviews, but suffice to say that it's well worth buying. I'm not sure how to describe the sound. I think that it's vaguely cosmic beat-driven rock, but I may be wrong. Buy the CD) Squeeze's "East Side Story" (No list affiliation. Just good music. I think that Squeeze is the best 80's band.) Rain Parade's "Emergency Third Rail Power Trip" and/or "Explosions in the Glass Palace" (Good, solid, imaginative retrodelic rock. Sound kind of like the Hollies when they try to, but also have slower, darker material. I reccomend "Prisoners" from "Explosions" to anyone on this list.) The Kinks' "Village Green Preservation Society" and "Something Else" (just trust me on these) Terrence Marks Second Student in the Tendo Kasumi School of Philosophy -Seeking enlightenment through normalcy. normal@grove.ufl.edu ------------------------------ From: SVagrant@aol.com Date: Fri, 7 Feb 1997 03:34:36 -0500 (EST) Subject: Re: RH at SXSW ahhh, doy this listing is from 1996, please disregard. It is simply wonderful. It sounds so much better than the cassettes (and it's more, well, lavender, too). And when you turn it sideways on, it's nearly not there. I was especially delighted with the typeface selection for the cover (Fajita's always been one of my favorites), but then, it doesn't take much to get me excited. Good work. No, GREAT WORK! I have heard Calenture is an amazing record but I have never heard it.... As far as the High Llamas goes, I feel no guilt talking about these guys because they are RIGHT up the Robyn Hitchcock alley. Gideon Gaye is a masterpiece, totally overlooked in this country and is probably out of print at this point and yet probably still in record stores since it was released in 1995. Sean O Hagan was previously in an english group called Microdisney and then later as an extant member of Stereolab..... What do they sound like? Take Stereolab's repetitive device, but throw away the Kraftwerk/Can influence then add lots of XTC, Robyn, Syd, and yes Brian Wilson (who I personally am not a fan of by the way) and you get the idea. The High Llamas last year in the UK released a double album called Hawaii that was never released in America (ironic?). You can buy it as an import for about $25 and it is well worth having. It is a much more difficult album to digest than Gideon Gaye, it is much longer and more droning... but it is a real grower and after 30 listens had now entered my top 5 records of 1996. It will be released domestically in the coming months.... Sorry for the long tangent but you guys would all love Gideon Gaye. If you were living under a rock and aren't already familiar with Mssrs. Difford and Tilbrook, I'd also recommend "Argybargy". Oh, and there's this guy named Elvis Costello I'd like to tell you about, he was their producer...... :) > The Kinks' "Village Green Preservation Society" and "Something Else" > (just trust me on these) I don't have to, I HAVE them already. I've only been championing the Kinks on the list for months now. I was a Kink Kultist before I was a Feg :). If you can find "Kinks Kronikles" anywhere, I would suggest that as a really good intro to the band- it's usually pretty cheap on vinyl, although a bit hard to find, and it'll make a believer out of almost anyone.
