In 1987-8, Rich Hall did a show on the original Comedy Channel called "Onion World". It was a really low budget affair drawing humor from digging through trade publications like "Pork Week" and wandering around packaging conventions and the like. It was actually quite funny. It was also a Jazz Butcher fan's dream. It featured an almost continuous soundtrack of JBC material, and used the song "Conspiracy" as its theme music. It devoted an entire episode to Rich's lost goldfish "Max", and ended the credits with the line, "So long Max, whereever you are." It featured an in-studio performance by an alternative band in each episode. When the show was cancelled, they ran a clearing-house episode of band clips which reportedly included performances by the Jazz Butcher Conspiracy and Mr. Robyn Hitchcock himself. Never actually saw that one, but I have a lot of the others on tape. If so, > what is it like? I really like his work on this album (very dark and > quiet), but I do not know how much I would care for a big Spyro Gyra affair. bill frisell is my favorite guitar player, so i'll say a few words -- most of his recent work is along the lines of 'deep dead blue' -- quiet, with a lot of sense of space, melody lines that veer in unexpected directions. i'd suggest starting with 'have a little faith' where his renditions of songs by bob dylan, arron copeland, sonny rollins, madonna, etc. might give a neophyte more to get a handle on, melodically. the recent 'quartet' has a pretty interesting structure: guitar, trumpet, violin, trombone; and the guit-bass-trio albums of music composed for the films of buster keaton are special faves as well. another good entry point might be hal wilner's _weird nightmare_ a tribute of sorts to jazz composer charles mingus and to the music instrument constructor/inventor harry partch. this tribute is unlike any other you've ever heard; wilner assembles a loose ensemble of folks, anchored in large part by frisell, with various musicians and vocalists joining from track to track. the diversity is astounding -- fer example, elvis costello sings (as on the ep. lj mentions) and public enemy's chuck d. recites from mingus' autobiography. it sounds like it can't possibly hang together, but somehow it does. look in the various artist section. frisell was also in noise jazz terrorist john zorn's group naked city, but his playing there is, um, a little different. enter with caution. sugarplastic: > it and asked me which XTC album this was!
