Well, the original issue of Nevermind doesn't have the bonus "Endless, Nameless" track, period. I have a original promotional copy of this CD, and it was a couple of months before I realized that my disc was missing something most of the other ones had. So that's not a very good case to cite, I think. But I too have heard that somehow BMG discs aren't mastered as well. I have no idea if this is true, though. I think I have two BMG discs, both of which I bought used: 10000 Maniacs' Blind Man Zoo and Jesus Jones' Doubt. Neither one sounds particularly crystalline/wonderful, but of course I can't draw any conclusions based on that. Re tape trees: I just participated in the Royal Albert Hall tape tree -- the first time I ever joined such a scheme. I'm really not too rabid about the whole concert tape-trading thing. I prefer records and CD's. Besides, I'm not obsessive enough to require a live version of a song just because there's a line from "I Am The Walrus" muttered in the middle or whatever. Anyway, I just want to say I was a little bit miffed, because I mailed out a new blank tape (still wrapped) with $2 postage and received a boxless tape in return that cost only $.55 to send. I felt somewhat gypped. Surely, the $2 would've EASILY covered the cost of mailing the box/J-card also. I probably should've said this privately, but I don't know the email address of the tape sender. No huge beef here -- I just thought I'd mention it. The comparison I originally drew (RH/Beck) wasn't about 'surreal' lyrics, though I guess that comes into it; it was about the ability to write some stuff that sounds (surreal/)poetic, other stuff that sounds (surreal/)funny, & - most importantly - other stuff that you can't quite tell whether to take seriously or not. This is very rare in my experience - most wouldbe-'surreal' songwriters don't have a sense of humour to start with. I'd agree that Frank Black comes pretty close to qualifying for this group, though. Did you ever hear a tale or two about a strange young man called Dylan, with a voice like sand and glue? Indeed, he is the spiritual godfather of this school of songwriting, who took all of the abovementioned 'surreal' (ack!) elements from spirituals, folk songs, talking blues and campfire tales and who knows what all and synthesized something amazing (the ramifications of which are still being explored by Robyn and Beck, among many others) and new in the rocknroll field. He seems like the most obvious person to mention in this context. Maybe this is WHY people aren't mentioning him, but I just thought I'd go ahead and say it anyways, cause it was bothering me that everyone was nattering on about Frank Black and not a one was talking about the excellent, amazing BOB! Thanks for indulging me :). Oh, and you know.......I once read a Robyn interview where he said that it was actually DYLAN that he wanted to be, rather than Syd Barrett, but found it rather impossible as Bob was pretty quintessentially American. Love on ya, Susan "well i wake up in the morning, there's frogs inside my socks your mama she's hidin', in the icebox your daddy comes in wearing a Napoleon Bonaparte mask and you ask why i don't live here honey, do you have to ask?"- Dylan, '65 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Jan 1997 20:58:55 -0500 From: mrrunion@tng.net (Runion, Michael R.) (no RH) I saw this band open for Freedy Johnston at the Mercury Lounge, and they stole the show, IMHO. They have a five-song cd out now called "Live at the Bonbonniere", and it's *so addictive*. I literally cannot stop humming all of the tunes. The lead singer, Mike Viola is the guy who did all of the singing and 50% of the writing for the music in "That Thing That You Do" (is that the name?). They're playing next Thursday at Wetlands (here in NYC)... Yes there is no reason for me posting this....just hanging back by the computer listening to CDs.... lj ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jan 1997 13:33:00 -0500 From: Lobsterman Subject: CDs for sale. Fegs- I have a small list of CDs which I am weeding out of my collection. In order to avoid taking up too much bandwidth on a non-Robyn topic, if you wish to peruse my list, please reply to me and put "CD List" on the subject line, and one will be sent to you very rapidly over these phone lines. On-topic: one of those CDs is Alvin Lives In Leeds, featuring "Kung Fu Fighting" by Robyn. I had one left unclaimed from this summer's "Alvin cutout bin scavenger hunt and sale." $7 (that includes shipping) and its yours. /-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-//-/-/-/-/-/-/- John B.
