As to Sinead ni Comhnagh, it's not so much copying, as just coming from the same keening tradition. Imagine my surprise when I turned on the radio on Saturday to hear Robyn! Broadcast across the whole nation, he was, too! The National Programme (read "the channel with light music with a bit of quirkiness, intelligent discussion, drama and current affairs) has a short series called "New adventures in Hi-fi" (a catchy title...) in which prominent NZ pop and rock musicians discuss their five favourite musical discoveries of 1996. Saturday's show featured Muttonbird Don McGlashan, whose picks were the "Beat the Retreat" tribute album, "The best of Sly & the Family Stone", Ron Sexsmith, Mary Margaret O'Hara, and "Fegmania!". So, at about 11.00 on a bright sunny Saturday in New Zealand, thousands of people would have been dlighted or mystified by "My wife and my dead wife"! A good start to the year!
