Subject: Re: Fave 1996 shows OK, because everyone else is doing it, here were my favorite 1996 shows. I saw about 40 concerts this year, but these were the top 10 (in chronological order): 1. April 25: Stereolab (Cal State Fullerton pub) 2. May 4: Ween (UC Irvine's Crawford Hall, opening for the Foo Fighters with a delicious f*ck-you acoustic set to a hostile, trendy crowd) 3. May 10: Guided By Voices (Whisky, Los Angeles -- my favorite 1996 show by a HUGE margin; over 2 hours of tunes, including FIVE encores) 4. May 17: Flaming Lips (Moguls, Hollywood -- also a sad night, due to seeing the wasted-away Timothy Leary in the crowd, "living it up" only days before his death; he was also at the Ministry show a couple of nights before -- I guess he went out with a bang) 5. June 27: Beck (Galaxy Theater, Santa Ana) 6. June 28: Golden Smog (Troubadour, West Hollywood) 7. June 29: Brainiac AND Neutral Milk Hotel (Spaceland, Silverlake -- whatta bill, and how's that for three consecutive days' entertainment?) 8. August 26: The Blue Nile (Roxy, Hollywood) 9. September 13: The Geraldine Fibbers (Foothill, Long Beach -- anyone else heard their version of "Yoo Doo Right?") 10. November 7: Komeda (Spaceland, Silverlake) Sorry, but Hitchcock (November 10) doesn't make the list. Just seemed like the usual acoustic Robyn deal to me -- nothing new. And I'm tired of the contrived, rambling monologues. :( Eb PS Top 5 artists I hope to finally see live during 1997: Portishead, The 3Ds, Epic Soundtracks, Cibo Matto and Olivia Tremor Control. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Dec 1996 20:00:16 -0600 (CST) From: Truman Peyote Subject: Re: Frooty Bandz On Mon, 30 Dec 1996, Strange Currants wrote: > At 20:58 28.12.96 -0800, Dot, the Itchy God. wrote: > > >and indeed it is quite regardless of dead western towns. so thus i > >shall propose a new thread... > > that of fruit and band image... > > Here are a few fruity bands: > > Vanilla Fudge > Moby Grape > Fiona Apple > Bananarama > > Sorry I can't think of any others. Also, there is the rather fruity retired sgt. major David Watts, whose association with the Kinks resulted in a very strange all-male party (I refer you to "X-Ray: The Unauthorized Autobiography" by Ray Davies for further details) and a wonderful song. Humorous trivia note- Mr. Watts was a resident of Rutland at the time. Rare Soft Boys recordings are available *everywhere*, thanks to this list. Well, from me, anyhow. When I try to get rare Soft Boys recordigns from anyone, something always goes wrong.. I must have access to this, otherwise I dry up. It's a medical condition :). > > And how frequently does John > > Cale tour there? This is necessary information? Highs HITCHCOCK's residencies at the 12 Bar Club - Excellent venue, especially hanging over the rail on the balcony, shame I didn't make all of them! THE SEX PISTOLS at Finsbury Park - What a surprise! Expected nothing, got the world. 500 30-somethings at the front frightening the youngsters, and spot-the-celebrity backstage (one question though, why was Daryl Hall there?) THE DIVINE COMEDY at The Shepherd's Bush Empire - Top of the Fops supported by a 30-piece orchestra. THE PRODIGY at Brixton Academy - Hard core entertainment for kids of all ages. IAN McNABB at The Shepherd's Bush Empire - The perennial showman never fails to excel. THE MICHAEL NYMAN BAND performing "After Extra Time" at The Royal Festival Hall - The year's most moving Hillsborough tribute. Honourable mention - THE NEUROTIC OUTSIDERS at The Whiskey a Gogo - where I taught some Californians that it's not really cool to just stand around with your arms folded. Lows MAZZY STAR at The Union Chapel - Excellent venue, lacklustre performance and abysmal lighting effects HEIDI BERRY at The Jazz Cafe - Someone ought to tell her that about the violins.... DEAD CAN DANCE at The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane - Cancelled on the night! Not impressed! Happy New Year everybody! Your list looks a bit like mine - low on anything much: BEST CDs OF THE YEAR Love Comes in Colours - great compilation of songs from Arthur, Bryan and the boys. Donovan's Greatest Hits - much better than the new album BEST NEW CD OF THE YEAR Prozaic - Honeycrack (but why have Sony/Epic dropped them after this terrific debut?) BEST GIGS OF THE YEAR Honeycrack RH on the Isle of Wight BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR Il Postino and a long way behind: Secrets and Lies Sense and Sensibility BEST BOOK I READ The Commodore - Patrick O'Brian (I hear there's a new one out!) LEAST APPEALING BOOK I READ Dan Leno and the Limehouse Golem (Peter Ackroyd) - what has got into him? I really liked Hawksmoor and First Light... That's it, really.
