I saw it at the Peterborough Wirrina Stadium which is probably a worse venue than the Oasis Leisure Centre! I remember it specifically because the friend I'd gone with managed to get himself run over on the way to the gig and due to a trip to the hospital to get his head sewn up, it meant that we didn't get there till half way through Clive Langer's set. I remember being annoyed as I'd just got into "Deaf School" and wanted to make comparisons with his "new" stuff. They don't have gigs at the Oasis any more do they? I did have the misfortune of having to work in Swindon for 9 months about 2 years ago and there was NEVER anything happening in that town! I've read about the band Oasis naming themselves after the leisure centre ever since they started, so either it's true or it's now been officially accepted as an urban myth. Friends are such a nuisance, aren't they? No consideration whatever! > I remember being annoyed as > I'd just got into "Deaf School" and wanted to make comparisons with his "new" stuff. I think CL had just produced an Elvis record, which is presumably the reason he got on the tour. Did he do anything after that? My recollection is that his band were just a bit too much like the Attractions to make a good support for Elvis. > They don't have gigs at the Oasis any more do they? They don't have gigs in Bath or Swindon much nowadays - not like the 70s when the Who and LZ both played Bath Pavilion. Admittedly Oasis did play Bath Pav just before their Glastonbury show, but it sold out before I could get a ticket. - Mike Godwin PS Whoops! Just remembered the obligatory Robyn content: we haven't seen RH in Bath either since the Egyptians played Moles in '86(ish). Great versions of 'Lightbulb Head' and 'The President'. Handsome Family/Eleventh Dream Day/Freakwater- Chicago, IL Nothing else really stands out in my mind, at the moment, and of course this is a fairly idiosyncratic list. Bear in mind also that it reflects my own weird taste and the fact that I only very rarely see shows outside the Chicago area. **Dan wonders: Did Pulp make it to Chicago? I thought they put on one of the most engaging shows I've seen in years. Jarvis' geeky Jaggerisms made for interesting theater, indeed. Thought I'd ask seeing how you liked the Different Class cd. I didn't get out much this year so these lists are pretty paltry, but I'm sure that as soon as I send this off, I will remember the 30 other things that I loved, which will cause me to slap my forehead, knocking loose my latest filling, which will make me temporarily lose balance and nudge over my desk lamp, which will spark and incite the oily rags in the corner into a riot of flame...well, you get the picture. Notice I DIDN'T include Beck, Sparklehorse, or Stereolab here, although I heard them so much through osmosis (Osmosis--that's that other band I kept hearing this year) that I almost started to like them, in that same way you develop an affection for the cranky guy who delivers your inter-office mail every day. Ah, that's much better. So, first off, last week I was on a Northwest Airlines flight to visit my folks for the holidays, and just as a little break from picking up about 14 different viral infections from the other pasengers, I checked out their in-flight magazine, hoping as always to find something about Robyn. Sure enough, there he was! On page 111, there's a nice bit about the Demme movie with a nice photo and everything, sandwiched between pieces about "Jingle All the Way" and "Mars Attacks!" Nothing newsworthy though, and only one quote: "I try to chew my life carefully before I swallow it," sez Robyn. Sounds familiar, somehow. BTW: Is anyone else really hoping that "Storefront Hitchcock" is just a *working* title? Call me hypercritical, but somehow I've gotta think that the man who came up with "Furry Green Atom Bowl" could do better. OFF TOPIC: Speaking of movies, I was going to do a top-ten list for the year but "Mars Attacks!" has now taken up all ten slots on the list, except for #6 (MST3K: The Motion Picture) and of course #1, which is always reserved for the new XTC album which never seems to come out (even though it isn't a movie). For those of you on Bayard's ultrafab Unhatched Crablings tape tree, I did my own J-Cards for it and they're on the web in the form of a single 91K 300-dpi black & white GIF file at: http://www.netins.net/showcase/jh3/crabcard.gif NOTE: This file will display but is too large to print correctly on any known web browser, so the thing to do is to save it locally (right-clicking on it usually pops up a menu that has this as an option) and then open & print it from an image viewer/editor program that supports black & white GIF files, and, if your printer is less than 300 dpi, print-scaling. Finally, I wish I could say that "Moss Elixir" was my favorite new album of the year but I'm afraid I have to give it to the Chills' "Sunburnt," which also beat out stiff competition from the Auteurs, the Loud Family, Boo Radleys, Cocteau Twins, and the (hey, no shit!) Curtain Society. Sorry folks! Please pick up your complimentary year's supply of Rice-a-Roni at the stage door and have a Happy New Year. --John Hedges ------------------------------ From: Terry_Linnig@hccompare.com Date: Mon, 30 Dec 96 14:50:20 cst Subject: Best of List - 1996 Hey all, I didn't want to feel left out, Happy New Year!!
