To my knowledge, Robyn has never had a commercial hit on the Top 100. So, what is a Robyn hit? Is it something that it a hit or favorite amongst the fans? How did A & M know what was a Robyn hit? Here's one of many possible examples: The obvious answer is- the same way that, around the time "Let's Dance" was released, RCA skimmed the surface of their archives to find out what David Bowie's greatest hits were. I have a compilation called "Fame and Fashion: David Bowie's Greatest Hits", which is thankfully now a rarity as it was poorly packaged, mastered, and compiled and thoroughly a ripoff (I hear that the Bowe himself had the RCAs all pulled for their lack of quality and that that is why they are now on Ryko, but I digress.....). Nothing on this compilation was a hit or anything approaching a hit (oh, maybe "Young Mericans" might have charted, I don't know, but it definitely was never a -hit-). Someone took a few songs that had been released as singles, and a couple that critics liked or were notorious for some or other reason (the person obviously wasn't too familiar with Bowie's work) and slapped 'em on there to capitalize on Dave's recenly released "Let's Dance". This is often how this stuff happens. Witness "Robyn Hitchcock's Greatest Hits" :). Love on ya, Susan P.S. I still have these RCA cds. Didn't someone tell me they were collector's items awhile back? All I know is they have no liner notes and sound like crap. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Dec 1996 18:47:44 -0600 (CST) From: Truman Peyote Subject: a silly question I read in the latest issue of Q Magazine that Oasis named themselves after a recreation center in Swindon. Also Robyn Hitchcock! This is part of their big 10th anniversary festival, which also includes Violent Femmes, Bob Mould, John Zorn, Lounge Lizards, Laurie Anderson, and many of the Knitting Factory regulars. For those who have not been there, the "Main Space" is not very large, and a good seat is not too hard to get if you arrive early enough. I saw Talking Heads there once, supported by a dreary band called the Dire Straits - wonder whatever happened to them? On another occasion I saw Elvis Costello and the Attractions there, supported by Clive Langer and the Boxes: does anybody remember the Boxes? The Oasis looks like a flying saucer, and you can see it on the right as the train leaves Swindon for Bath (25 mins). I have no idea whether Oasis named themselves after it or not. - Mike Godwin (working on Sunday for a report that has to be finished this week). I wish you all a wonderful 1997. May all your wishes come true, and may Robyn's movie come to your town. (I have a bet with a friend from the Billy Bragg list that Robyn's movie WILL play in theatres (art-house mostly) other than L.A., New York, etc. Specifically, Portland, OR (we are moving back there fairly soon). He thinks that even with a name like Demme behind the movie, that it will still be a straight-to-video kind of thing. And he even had the gall to bitch about the fact that Robyn had a movie and Billy didn't. :) And without further adieu: TOP ALBUMS OF 1996: 1. Weeping Tile- Cold Snap 2. It would include Pulp's "Different Class", Richard Davies' "There's Never Been a Crowd Like This", Lyle Lovett's "Road to Ensenada", and the Kinks' "To The Bone" (note to E.B.- I know I didn't include this on the list I sent to you, but that's because I hadn't heard it yet). As for what I'd take out- I'm not familiar with a few things on your list, so I can't comment, but I'll be damned if I understand the appeal of Cibo Matto and I've never really understood what was so great about Symboldude either. I've heard that the "Everything But The Girl" record is fabulous, but haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. > TOP SHOWS OF 1996: 1. John Cale/Red House Painters- Chicago, IL (hands down) 2. Lyle Lovett- Border's on Michigan Ave. Chicago, IL (this wasn't a full fledged "concert", per se, but I did get to meet the man, which rocked, so it's included here) 7. Handsome Family/Eleventh Dream Day/Freakwater- Chicago, IL Nothing else really stands out in my mind, at the moment, and of course this is a fairly idiosyncratic list. Bear in mind also that it reflects my own weird taste and the fact that I only very rarely see shows outside the Chicago area. > FAVORITE MOVIES: > Welcome to the Dollhouse, Angels & Insects, Fargo, Bottlerocket, Ransom, > That Thing You Do, Michael. Agreed here except for the last two. Also, don't forget "Nico/Icon", which was fascinating. REASONS THAT CIBO MATTO APPEALS TO ME: 1. It is hybrid-type music (which is the current trend, i guess. see BECK). I like rap mixed with ambient mixed with old horn samples mixed with other stuff and overseen by that keyboard-sound god, Mitchell Froom. REASONS THAT SYMBOLMAN APPEALS TO ME (and, in particular, his new album, Emancipation:) 1. This guy can jam! I mean, jam in the jazz sense of the word. And Emancipation is very jam-oriented. Yes, there are alot of words and stuff, but in between all that, there are alot of long, jam-oriented sections with lots of horns. I love the Symbolman/horns combination. Symbolman: your horn section is in my music! Horn Section: your damn music is in our horn section!
