Each branch makes 6 copies and sends them to leaves. It's just a distribution network for tapes. People who followed this one last time, skip the rest of this: _Quiff_ was recorded under the ludicrous and archaic (and now repealed) English law that records pressed in runs of less than 100 weren't subject to tax, hence the rarity. It was recorded at Cambridge Folk Club (which was still at the Red Cow at the time - it hadn't yet moved to the Portland Arms); half is a live set (by the sound quality, apparently taped with a walkman at the end of a cardboard tube) and half a dismally poor studio set. It was released - as were all CFC recordings prior to _Live At The Portland Arms_ - under the name of "The Toby Jug And Washboard Band" (a long forgotten in joke), and was sold at CFC gigs*. It's also notable for its dismally bad cover. I don't know where the studio set was recorded, but Spaceward would be a reasonable guess. That said, from the quality the public toilets in the Kite would be a reasonable guess. *Anyone wanting a more detailed history of CFC, read "Friday Night Is Folk Club Night", from issue 5 of _PVs_ - I think this one is also on the web page. _JSF_ was released under the name of John Barry Featuring etc - probably to cash in on the 'real' John Barry. It was recorded at Spaceward, engineered by Gary Lucas and produced by Roger Jackson and Gary Lucas. It was released on Tado Records. Vocals are credited to John Barry, Alex Cooper, Robyn Hitchcock, Roger Jackson, Jenny Marr & Kimberley Rew, btw. Someone more sensible than me points out that the easiest way to resolve this is to give woj scans of the covers of the two albums to put on the web pages, which I'll do at some point. I'll also try to get Kimberley or Andy to write a history of these two albums and post that as well. I know that I've sent copies of both these albums - and _Demons & Fiends_ - to people on this list. Since Robyn denies their existence, he can hardly set the Sincere lawyers on anyone copying them, so if anyone's willing to send out copies of them, make yourselves known. (Bayard?) Sitting on my doorstep was a tube-mailer from Rhino. Luckily it did not get soaked. Inside is a poster of Robyn Hitchcock (They also included 5 extra copies). The poster is pretty good, especially for being free. Thanks go out to Jim Neill at Rhino. Get yours while you can. I have a few questions I'm hoping someone might be able to answer... I'm wondering if "live at the portland arms" is floating around anywhere, on tape or vinyl. What does "glass flesh" refer to...I think I read it in #236? I've seen a few 7" and 12" rareties on the WWW, for sale through mail order record companies. Does anyone know if these companies are legit? I'm also searching for bootlegs. I have the cd "stand back dennis" but I want more More MORE!! Last question for today concerns the Rhino re-releases. The last time Robyn was in Toronto, (before the current tour), I asked him about the Rhino disks. He said there will be some bonus tracks, but since I already had everything on vinyl and cd, not to bother with the reissues. I am desperately seeking the liner notes in this collection, are they anyone's web site? I'd also like to know from other fegs if I should be saving up to buy the reissues. Thanks very much...and p.s...I called Virgin Mega Store in NYC and they sent me a copy of Mossy Liquor, which I'm about to listen to! The first six (_BDSR_, _GD_, _IODOT_, _Fegmania!_, _GLTHO_, and _EOL_) are at ftp://ftp.ecto.org/pub/lists/fegmaniax/liner-notes/RhinoReissues The last three are little more than the text of the short stories "The Professor" and "Legends of the South Wight 2: The Glass Hotel", which are already on the web site, um, somewhere. Or they used to be. I have the cd "stand back dennis" but I > want more More MORE!! good luck. there are a couple more cd bootlegs and a handful of vinyl ones too, but they are harder to come by these days. we're in the midst of a crackdown in most western countries on bootlegs, pirate copies, whatever. stores that still carry them will tend to carry only stuff they know they can sell, and robyn's material usually isn't among that select group. >Last question for today concerns the Rhino re-releases. >I am desperately seeking the liner notes in this collection, are they >anyone's web site? they can be found at ftp://ftp.ecto.org/pub/lists/fegmaniax/liner-notes (along with a ton of other stuff in a semi-state of organization, one directory level up). >I'd also like to know from other fegs if I should be saving up to > buy the reissues. that's a tough question to answer. i ended up buying most of them, but still haven't picked up a couple. most of the bonus tracks are live or demo versions, which aren't as enticing as either previously unreleased tracks or tracks never on disc before. but it's hard to justify $12-15 for "the pit of souls" or "the can operner". probably, the only reissue that i should have bought new was _gravy deco_, which collects all the myriad versions from _groovy deco/ay_ and the two discofied mixes of "nightride to trinidad" and "kingdom of love". my advice is that they are worth buying only if you do not have the import discs already or if you can find them used. woj ------------------------------ From: Hedblade@aol.com Date: Sat, 23 Nov 1996 15:07:41 -0500 Subject: Franklin Mint plates ;) <<> Just out of curiosity, how many RH cd's have been released in the last > two years? my count is 46 to date. this sets a all time record for re-issues within a artists lifetime. this number does not included the limited edition picture plate set from the franklin mint, which number 5. >> For those of you who don't have the Franklin Mint plates and still have the gall call yourselves Fegs, they are simply beautiful! 1) "Soft Boys - Soft Days" Robyn, Morris, Kimberley, and Andy dressed in romantic frilly shirts beneath a magical oak tree. Robyn is playfully pushing Morris on a tree swing. Precious! 2) "Underwater Moonboys" A dreamlike vision of Atlantis with the boys cast as statues. Dolphins frolic in the background. Breathtaking! 3) "Groovy Decoupage" Combines plate collecting with another popular "arts and crafts" passtime. Features Robyn pasted over a London "tube" map. Shellacked and baked to a toasty crisp. Haunting! 4) "Child Of The Universe" Perhaps the treasure of the series. Pictures Robyn, open armed, head bent back embracing eternity in the outer reaches of space. Features the Starship Enterprise in the background. A must for Fegs and Trekers! 5) "Moss Covered Alchoholic Elixer" Actually two separate plates. The "offical" release is standard size. The second "limited edition" is 12" in diameter and features identical pictures of Robyn, but these were all taken in the beautiful, snow covered Alps of Sweeden. For those of you who didn't collect them the first time around, don't worry. There are plans to re-issue the plates with additional picture and scenes that aren't on the original releases! :) Yours in Feg-dom, Jay ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Nov 96 16:56:05 EST From: Jeff Rosedale Subject: the robyn shuffle I just remembered, as I was listening to the Mossy Liquor version of Beautiful Queen for the first time this AM, that Robyn and Deni did this cool sort of micro-waltz in the middle of that song in concert. I have a pink vinyl EP release on Delorean Records by The Soft Boys which was apparently recorded in 1977. It has no cover - just pink vinyl in heavy transparent plastic sleeve. On the front are two photos of The Soft Boys and the back has a pictures of a newspaper bio of the band from 1978 and a press release written by Robyn in 1977 to be sent out with their first single issued at Raw Records. I picked this up along with "Live At Portland Arms" when I first got into Robyn about 10 years ago. The song listing on the pink vinyl release is as follows: Side 1: 1. The Yodelling Hoover 2. Give It To The Soft Boys 3. Vyrna Knowl Is A Headbanger Side 2: 1. Hear My Brane 2. The Face Of Death 3.
