Date: Wed, 13 Nov 1996 16:01:02 -0800 hi fegs... ok, now that our most recent poll has been completed and we have discovered who we all listen to most - the most popular stuff - why don't we try to doing things a little backwards. what i am proposing is for people to donate a list of their favorite, most interesting, etc., off the beaten path musicians/bands. years ago, my friend steve, said you must hear this robyn guy. steve and i have swapped musical interests for years - making tapes, discussing bands, etc. (you know we all dig this kind of thing). well, steve gave me a ton of robyn's records and said "get ready for something haunting and beautiful." i was addicted in two days. that first week i even saw a fish fall out of the sky and another one zoom by me on second avenue in seattle (i am not kidding). if it wasn't for steve, i may have never discovered robyn. back to my point, for whoever is interested in participating, pick a bunch of (more or less) obscure bands and write a brief explanation describing them (stuff like where they are from, some obvious influences, when they existed, etc.). i know we have some super connoiseurs (spelling?) out there who can enlighten all of us regarding some great stuff. what about it? i posted my own list a couple of days ago, which had a definite brasilian/international slant to it, and i have heard from a few people already. i would be very happy to be the care taker of this project and produce a webpage or something out of it... anyways, any one think this is a worthy idea (did i even make sense)? Why do so many people (our beloved prince included) worry so much about fashion, conformity, fitting in and all that bollocks. What has the rise of Nirvana got to do with the sound of the Egyptians. Just because they existed simultaneously???? I'm not what you'd call a big Nirvana fan but they were very good at what they did and Mr Cobain was, to my mind at least, very talented. SO WHAT!!!!! I don't listen to other bands in the context of Nirvana, XTC, The Beatles, etc., unless of course they happen to sound LIKE them, certainly not when they sound different. "Vive la difference" I say. I will listen to RH, Napalm Death, Herb Alpert, XTC, The Dickies, Hungarian Folk Music, Van Morrison, Harry Connick Jr, Joy Division, The Sex Pistols, one after the other, and I will always escape miraculously unharmed for daring to wallow in such diversity. The only difference bands make to each other is that they will steal audiences and therefore cash as fashions change, but "fans" with those kinds of transitory interest will always do this because A) they are shallow and B) at the end of the day they probably don't really give a toss about the music. It really gets me though when someone like RH falls into the trap and says that the Egyptians were "doomed" by the arrival of Nirvana!!!! And I thought he was above all that. Hi all, I will gladly post a complete report of the Atlanta show (11-12-96) within the next day, unless someone beats me to it--in which case I'll just fill in the details. But, I must report (and excuse me if its already been stated as I'm on the digest version that is not sent out until the end of each day) that Robyn closed his wonderful set with a duet with Billy Bragg--er, a trio really, since Deni was also playing. The song was some kind of cover I'd say, but I was not familiar with it. Billy stepped out from behind the stage and was helped into a guitar by stage hand person, while Billy told him the key and the chords of the song. Billy looked a bit bewildered by it all--definitely not confident at first. It seemed like it was a last minute idea by Robyn to do a song. The song was a midtempo countryish/rock-ee number with opening lyrics something like "Train train __ ___ ___?" and then "Big old train, 16 counties long" later it had something about the train taking people away (it was not Train Train by Billy Bragg). Billy mainly sang in on the chorus, but sang a few other parts as well. Robyn clearly led the song and sang most of it and played lead throughout. Deni hung back and played and watched, doing some crazy fiddling. (Does one "fiddle" a viola?) The song reached its ending, but Deni kept playing her part, which prompted Robyn to start a free form continuation of the song, something he was more than happy to do. Robyn started talk-singing about that big old train and how it took all those things away ... he went on and on (not very long though really) and told of how the train took the stage away and Billy and Deni away and him away and again took Billy and Deni away. About this time, Billy exited behind the stage curtain (backstage), which Robyn soon realized, "where's he gone, oh well" and continued with the story. Then Deni took Billy's cue and also left. Robyn kept on, clearly enjoying himself, and soon Billy came back on stage from back stage, Deni popped out from stage right, and Robyn hesitated and then went quickly into the song's chorus. Deni and billy realized what was up and ran back to their places, with Billy reaching the microphone just in time to sing the last few words. Then came, if memory serves, a big bow by Robyn and the man was off. Sorry this went on longer than I thought it would. I will be sure to give what I can recall of the set list (plus other observations) within the next day. I failed to bring a pen with me, even though I was prepared with a few CD sleeves in case an autograph possibility presented itself. An autograph request with no pen--not recommended, btw. I had no luck getting to meet Robyn or Billy, but neither did I try too hard. I have such mixed feelings about begging to be let back stage and then approaching someone to say hi or ask for a signiture. Ah, nevermind. Robyn sounded great, Billy sounded very good, the crowd was at least as much there for Robyn as for Billy--so Robyn got complete attention and full crowd support! That's no different from any binary you'd download from anywhere else. We've been getting "good times" on the amateur telescope makers' list for months. It invariably attracts more and more text to it, since people write comments and include the original message. Sometimes the ATM digest would be about 30-50% "killer email virus" content. The jerk who set this up gets his jollies out of eating up everybody's bandwidth. That's the virus. It was pretty clever idea the first time around (just as you could think of clever ways to make old people fall and hurt themselves), but pretty pathetic as a copycat crime. Anybody seeing a message along these lines please delete it and tell the person who sent it to you what's going on. Penguin sent out a flier with roughly this information about the "Irina" virus, signed with a fake name associated with a fake university. They followed up with an announcement that it was a hoax to generate publicity for one of their new sf titles, also called _Irina_; the name on the original flier was one of the characters in the novel. A more complete article on this was just posted to alt.folklore.urban. A search for the word "irina" in the Subject: line should turn it up. The whole thing was based on the infamous "Good Times" virus hoax. There's a FAQ on that one at http://www.urbanlegends.com/misc/good_times_virus_faq.html if anyone wants to check it out. (For those of you upset > about his lack of stage banter these days, stop and think- isn't that what > keeps the "loony" myth going? Hmmmmm, wonder why he's not to interested?) Come on, is Green Day the only thing happening? I daresay not. As far as I can tell, the top 40 (whoops! I meant "alternative") scene is quite wide open. There is no one trend going on. Yes, you have Green Day, but you also have Garbage (super produced plastic fluff with cutesy girl singer), Stabbing Westward (industrial lite angst heavy), Oasis (12 year olds trying to rewrite 'Revolver'), and, a whole buncha people that sound like those 70s singer-songwriters they play on those stations that yer mom listens to while driving (e.g. Fiona Apple, Sheryl Crow, et al- ever seen Sheryl Crow and Carly Simon in the same place? I thought not! :)). In short, it's hardly a punk revolution Mark II out there. There seems to be room for damn-near every style, with no one especially dominant. Besides, I would argue that his stage banter is hardly the only thing that feeds the "loony" image, or even the most important thing. I think occasionally "loony old unca Bobby" self-consciously encourages people to think of him this way- really, sometimes he comes off as too "eccentric Unca" by half. IMHO, it's more a case of sometimes he enjoys being thought of that way (after all, it can be very liberating and entertaining to be considered a freak, take it from someone who's been there), and other times he runs from it screaming. > He wants to be excepted and dare I say recognized. He's entitled to feel a > little of the "I've earned it" tinge isn't he? There's nothing wrong with wanting to be accepted or recognized, especially when one is a wildly original and influential genius of Robyn's class. He HAS earned it. And with the Demme film, it may actually be coming- it's a matter of wait and see. Furthermore, I think Morrissey is hardly a good example here, being that Morrissey is rather a decent craftsman himself, and certainly no corporate plastic-injection mold ala Alanis, the former Tiffany of Canada turned angst queen. > Get off that soapbox, you're tall enough as it is! :) Susan P.S. As I conceive of it, anyway. Hopefully both camps have a good enough sense of humor to pull this off in a non-hateful manner. The only question I have is- who will be the first to give in?
