Even with a full itinerary I still find shops open late at night. I managed to pick up "Underwater Moonlight" and "Invisible Hits" for $10 a piece new. This is my first experience of studio Soft Boys since I only had "Portland" before that, and they aren't quite what I expected. They're bloody good. (Not that I didn't expect them to be good, just scrappier.) "IH" has it's low points, although I gather from the Goldmine article that this contains the earliest recordings. "UM" is excellent though. "Queen of Eyes" has just claimed the recent RH fave song status from "Devil's Coachman". The only thing that annoys me is Matthew Seligman's bum note on the title track. (It's between 2:26 and 2:29 and is the third held note during the solo.) His bass sounds slightly flat throughout but this is definitely a semi-tone low (anyone agree?). Serves him right for joining the Thomson Twins I say. Incidentally Goldmine didn't say why Andy left the band. I presume it was amicable after reading the praise he heaps on the band in the liner notes. Hamish (dreaming of "black lace thighs", and it's not "carrot-based shell", it's "carapace") P.S.
