Well, I for one have changed my opinion about Billy Bragg of late (but not about his music I hasten to add). I was brought up in Northamptonshire (England) in a small town called Oundle (which, coincidentally is about 30 miles from Cambridge) where Billy lived when he was in the band 'Riff Raff'. The first band I ever saw live was Riff Raff when they supported The Stranglers back in 1978. When he started putting out records on his own, I never liked the fact that the politics always seemed to be much more important than the music...... However, at one of the recent Robyn shows at the 12 Bar Club in London, I ended up sitting next to Billy for most of the evening and had a long discussion about my home town and the various characters that we both knew. We discussed the Robyn/Billy tour of the U.S. (which at that point I didn't know about)..... all in all, I must (grudgingly) admit that I did enjoy talking to him and he did seem to be genuinely "nice". (i see in retro that others have commented on this and I do agree that getting new fans is key to continued livlihood.) however, i really had no interest in seeing billy and left the building (with a new upside down duck t-shirt, $15, thank you) at the coda of robyn's set ("Beautiful Queen" -- hope I didn't spoil the ending for anyone :-)> -- but I digress), so bragg fans will forgive me for not reporting on his no doubt stirring hour of love and anarchy. on the radio this afternoon (wxrt, tom marker's show) RH played a couple of tunes and mentioned that the show was starting promptly at 7:30 with him and that it did. i enjoyed a tomato & chevre & basil pizza and a nice glass of chianti (eh, lecter?) across the street before heading to the show and walking in at 7:32 to the second verse of "devil's radio." he apparently opened with some kind of song with "pumpkins -- and tomatoes," according to the couple I quizzed on my way down to the main floor. it was packed and the crowd was attentive and appreciative. hard to say there were a ton of hardcore fans there, but enough casual ones at least to make him feel wanted. in that ridiculous checkered shirt, for those of you who care about these things. "chinese bones" followed and then something identified on the one-dollar bill I used to scrawl the set list as "where do you go when you die?" i'm sure that makes sense to most of you. deni came out for three songs -- "dechirico," "egyptian cream" and "filthy bird," which is quite possibly my favorite song on ME/ML, which is a tough thing to have to pick. the two of them play wonderfully together IMHO, and having seen this combo twice now have to say the songs want nothing from the egyptians, as much as I loved that big rock sound. RH is a terrific guitar player, and really knows how to keep the music interesting, even when the lyrics don't make sense to an audience who doesn't already know every word. the song escapes me now, but he had a big time playing an effects-laden solo, and after the end of the song he said, "the delay pedal thanks you." Big cheers when RH broke into "my wife & my dead wife" which he followed with a set of "you" songs -- "I'm only you," "I am not you" and "You and Oblivion." By this time he had long abandoned his acoustic guitar for a black Telecaster. He introduced his last song saying, "Oh, I haven't played this one together before," and ripped into a tasty, if tentative, "the face of death." encores with deni, "sinister" and "BQ," both satisfying. still, 70 minutes goes by fast when you're enjoying yourself, and there was a song or two I still might've enjoyed hearing. he'll be back, tossing his shaggy salt-and-pepper mop over his right eye like nobody's business. now i have to kind of pretend i didn't have a very good time because the little had to go to something for work, very dull and very far away, so was unable to join me. she was not a happy camper. as for the A&M greatest hits -- i liked it. i think it's a good introduction. not that you asked. ============================================================================ ==|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| Communique from . . . Robyn's show Wednesday in Chicago was fantastic. Even a non-Feg I brought along was impressed, especially by the acoustic Robyn. He played "My Wife and my Dead Wife", and a lot of other stuff. (OK, OK, I'm told I can't leave it at that. Here's a fairly complete list, in no particular order, to the best of the recollections of myself, Susan Dodge of the raven hair, and Tracy Copeland whose tresses are akin to fine spun toast): Robyn said that in honor of Halloween, he was sticking mainly to songs having to do with death, which strangely didn't seem to limit his song selection any... My Wife and my Dead Wife De Chirico Street Green Storm Lantern Devil's Radio Devil's Coachman Face of Death [the one about what happens when you're dead--does it have a name yet?] I am not me I'm Only You Egyptian Cream Sinister but Happy Beautiful Queen Filthy Bird You & Oblivion Chinese Bones Highlights included an extended trippy solo in "I'm Only You" and an extended monologue of the seduction of a tomato. (Sue suggested that it was steamy enough, he should have gotten our credit card numbers first...) And of course, Deni Bonet added some great touches on several songs, including a terrific seabird effect during "Filthy Bird". Robyn wore the checkerboard shirt; Deni was in pumpkin for the occasion. Not sure what else there is to say; his electric guitar work was good as always, but his hands were just blurs on a lot of the acoustic songs. Just an amazing musician. For the Billy Bragg fans out there, here's a list of what I think his songs were called: 1649 She's Got a New Spell St. Swithin's Day >From Red to Blue Accident Waiting to Happen Blue Velvet America Goal Hanger When the World Falls Apart Now that the Space Race is Over Shirley The Saturday Boy Socialism of the Heart Sexuality Sugar Daddy Waiting for the Great [something] Forward Looking for Another Girl Bragg was a little heavy on the rhetoric for my tastes--my friend summed it up with "I always wanted to experience the 60's..."--but I liked his songs as music, regardless of what message he wanted me to take away from them. He was also an excellent story teller; his between-song banter was as funny ha-ha as Robyn's was funny as-only-Robyn-can-be. He dislikes baseball and American football, Detroit newspaper publishers and the Bank of Montreal--he was quite incensed that they have ads using Dylan's "The Times they are A'Changin'". And it turns out he has nothing against Alanis Morissette, it's the tribute bands that have already sprung up, when she's only got the one album out, that he's angry about. Sue and I tried to meet Robyn after the show, but the fascist powermongers running the Vic who'l get theirs come the revo--oops, took a little more away from the Bragg set than I thought. Anyway, that didn't work out, but our own brother Feg Jay Hedblade was a friend indeed and got us autographed photos-- thanks, Jay. (Jay says he'll be back contributing to the list any day now; things have been up in the air as he deals with a new service provider and some other stuff that's come up lately.) That's about enough, I think. All in all a great show. Dave.
