We'd feel safer going with another person; the third we had reneged. There's a slight stipulation: we're looking for a third party to fill the slot, and through no power of my own, if my friend finds that third before I do, I might have to email you by Monday night and notify you if it's been 'filled'. Thus far, we've had no such luck with finding anyone. Also, if you can drive in Detroit, bonus!...but not imperative. Are you in a Francophone area, or was RH just > being difficult? > > - Mike Godwin > Darn. I had a quick look through the web page before I wrote that line. Too quick a look, obviously. Montreal is largely francophone, but is "the home of most of the ethnic and anglophone minority in Quebec" (city.net). The anglophone population would check in somewhere between 300,000 - 600,000. The definition of anglophone in demographic studies varies considerably, depending on whether they're trying to show the English community as a pervasive threat, or an endangered species. The population of Ottawa (RH/BB's next stop) is 313,000. I had always imagined that Robyn would be quite chatty at a live show. Of course, speaking a bit of French here would only be seen as a courtesy, but I was having to translate RH's French lead-ins for the francophone Billy Bragg fan in front of me. I don't think many in the audience were served any better by his effort. Anyway, I got the feeling that RH was saying less than he normally would, because of the translations. The repressive language laws around here could lead a casual observer to believe that the anglophone presence here is quite small. BB made a comment about the danger of ethnic nationalism. He also spent quite a while slamming Alanis Morrissette, only to find out that she hails from Ottawa. Oops! I think this will be to the advantage of both artists; the Bragg fans in front of me were asking how hard it is to find Robyn Hitchcock recordings, and I intend to seek out BB material in the near future. They don't sound the same, but they're both strong songwriters who (at least currently) are presenting their music in much the same fashion. John was right in saying that the crowd was obviously Billy's. It made me feel a bit lonely in the crowd, and a bit sorry for Robyn. He was well enough received, but you couldn't hear the crowd make that noise of excited recognition at the beginning of a particularly good song. He deserved a token encore, at least. So did I. -- Ross Overbury Montreal, Quebec, Canada email: rosso@cn.ca ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Oct 1996 14:40:22 -0500 (EST) From: Vashty Hawkins Subject: Toronto show - mini review Fairly full house, and appreciative crowd. Robyn looked fairly happy to be there, had a spiffy checked shirt on, and his set ran about an hour. Amongst the songs he performed were Sinister But Happy, Message for You, Egyptian Cream, Driving Aloud, Balloon Man, Devil's Radio, I Am Not Me, DeChirico Street. Deni Bonet was terrific - loved the interplay between the two of them, and her violin fleshes out the acoustic guitar just enough. RH did a brief encore, racing back onto the stage with a barely buttoned snakes-and-ladders-type-pattern new shirt, revealing (gasp) love handles. Enjoyed Billy Bragg as well, though I could have (despite being fairly left wing myself) done without the soapbox sloganeering between some songs. After the umpteenth speech about the glories of socialism it was eyeball-rolling time. Apart from that, he was energetic and witty; and its refreshing to have someone from another country come to Canada and actually know something about its politics. Would have loved to have seen WAY more of Robyn, though ... I was under the impression that the show was going to be more 50-50 Bragg/Hitchcock instead of 25% Robyn and 75% Billy. I guess I'm just selfish that way. I can't imagine seeing Robyn in concert and needing binoculars to see him from the upper level of some monsterdome. The only thing worse than that is having one your favorite artists headline for somebody you could care less about with inflated ticket prices. Kay *has* a life, i assure you. i've met her; i've met her husband, i've drunk their beer and marveled at their well-stocked bookshelves. over the two years or so that i've been here she's brought a lot of spirit to the discussions. we may not always agree, she may not always adhere to the topic strictly, but whatever else, she's contributed more than random ill-humor and mean spiritedness, and that's quite a bit more than i can say for you. have a lovely day, doug -- oh,no!! you've just read mail from doug -- dmayowel@access.digex.net a.k.a. dougmhyphw@aol.com -- get yr recently updated pathos at http://www.mwmw.com/pathetic/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Oct 1996 12:40:01 +1100 From: james.dignan@stonebow.otago.ac.nz (James Dignan) Subject: Richard Thompson link/mauve... >Date: Fri, 25 Oct 1996 08:34:38 +0500 >From: Ken Frankel >Subject: Playing the game > >Is there a link between Robyn and Richard Thompson?
