I've been w/o the net for a while , so I haven't been able to lurk as I usually do. But I'm not here to tell everyone about my renewed presence, I'm here to ask what ya'll think about the A & M compilation. Perhaps this has been covered earlier, but it's new to me. (I've been in a _small_ town on the Ohio-Indiana border for several months, so getting to record stores has been difficult. Actually, getting to grocery stores has been difficult, but that's another story...) Anyway... do the serious collectors have any comments to make about the "new" tracks? Are they rare or just b-sides from radio promos, etc.? The (electric) "Globe of Frogs" reminded me how much I like the rock'n'roll Robyn. Which also reminds me, why do critics talk about the "mature" Robyn now when they mean the boring Robyn. I thnk he's stripped down his sound a little too much lately, but that's just my unsolicited, slightly heretical opinion. "Ruling Class" is a fun song. Where was it before this? "Balloon Man" should NOT have been included for any reason, we've all heard it toomany times already. Whoops! There I go expressing strong opinions again. I'll stop. Sorry. Oh well, that's just my 2=A2. Rev. Christopher Hintz P.S.> I'd love to hear from any fellow theological fegs. Respond with email, so as to not clutter up the list with adiaphoral effluvium, SVP. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Oct 1996 21:09:21 -0400 From: sister ernestine Subject: Re: A & M Compilation also sprach cph@bright.net (Christopher Hintz): >I'm here to ask what ya'll think about the A & M >compilation. Perhaps this has been covered earlier, but it's new to me. don't think i chimed in back then, so i'll chime in now. basically, a&m tried to make both a greatest hits album and a rarities compilation and, in doing so, failed at both. i suspect that the split personality of the compilation was intended to make it palatable to both the hardore fans and the "postmodern rockers". since i doubt many of the latter bothered to buy it, a&m would have been much better off just going for an odds and sods collection. >Which also reminds me, why do critics talk about the "mature" Robyn >now when they mean the boring Robyn. "mature" is criticspeak for describing someone who was once loud or raucous or some such, but is now making quieter music. since it's not nice to call one man's treasure "crap", these kinds of words are used to describe it. the value judgement is left up as an exercise for the reader. >I thnk he's stripped down his sound a >little too much lately, but that's just my unsolicited, slightly heretical >opinion. maybe, maybe not. i'm not one of those who take an extreme position on the eye-respect spectrum. some of the new songs sound excellent in the solo-acoustic sound. others, as demonstrated on moss and mossy, shine with a fuller sound. i'm not as disturbed by the recent stripping down as much as i am bothered by the renouncing of the egyptians. while it may be true that all possibilities have been exhausted, there's a lot to be said about what they did do and their sound, exhausted or not, isn't a bad thing. homer doesn't fill their shoes. >"Ruling Class" is a fun song. I've actually gone to a Halloween party as Balloon Man. I attached about thirty inflated balloons to sweats. Nobody got the reference--most people figured I was a varicolored Fruit of the Loom grape. Bending the rules, here, I think. RH and SV would have to appear on a record _together_ to qualify. I suspect that Peter Buck, Tom Petty, Ron Wood and a few other jammers simplify this game immensely. - MG ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Oct 1996 11:34:43 +0200 (METDST) From: "J. Yes, K, pasta sounds good. I also know for sure that there's a VERY good Chinese place not 2 doors away from the Keswick that definitely has a bar. I'd say we make a decision soon on where we're going to meet and when. The bug museum also sounds like a good idea, as long as it's open. Let's give ourselves enough time to eat and imbibe before the show. P.S. On the Respect tour at the Keswick I was there early and got to meet Andy Metcalfe 'cos he just happened to be hanging around outside, so ya never know! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Oct 1996 10:47:24 -0500 From: "Gene Hopstetter, Jr." Subject: favourite Griffith axed: >Fegs, since Halloween is approaching, what Hitchcock character would you >dress up as for a costume party? Will this current batch of shows follow a strict format like the 94-95 tour (acoustic set ending with Yip Song, followed by an encore on electric guitar always beginning with "I Am Not Me")? etc etc. Also, on every tour, he manages to resurrect an old song or two from the back catalogue.
