Marcy Tanter ------------------------------ From: RxBroome@aol.com Date: Fri, 27 Sep 1996 00:20:46 -0400 Subject: frenchmatsrutles12strings... Since we're still on misheard lyrics and the new topic of tickets in the French language (which some of us speak better than others, to heartrending effect) has been broached, lemme tell ya how disconcerting 'twas during my time in Paris to order a ticket to see the Replacements and, upon receiving said billet, note that it was in fact for a performance by "REPLACEMENT + Guest". Sounded like all they were sure of was that the guy they'd booked wasn't gonna show. (Incidentally, there WAS no guest, so the error was twofold.) (A friend of mine also saw a Paris show by the Rolling Band, featuring ex-Black Flag frontman Henry Rolling, one presumes.) M. Godwin wants to know about the Rutles these days. My friend Rob,who keeps track of such things far too ardently, tells me that a "Beatles Anthology" spoof ("Rutles Archaeology") is due this fall. And a tour. I was amused by the Rutles, but flogging it at this point seems a little sad (like the Blues Brothers reunions when James Belushi is dead and Dan Akroyd is fatter than Belushi ever was). But for those who dare, there's the info. Glad to hear Robyn's on the 12-string again-- it suits him. Electric or acoustic? Subject: Re: That Thing You Do I don't know HOW this whole Robyn Hitchcock rumor got started, but I already have the soundtrack and I don't see/hear one SHRED of evidence of Fegdom. I repeat: His name does not appear on the album. The album is a bunch of Beatlesque pop tunes, but they're so squeaky-clean and the production is so seamless that they're just a big sugary bore. There's also a couple of surf instrumentals and a couple of sorta "easy listening" tunes. In one ear and out the other. To sum up, there is no reason for Fegs to be interested in this album. And if they are, my CD is officially up for sale. Cheers, GB ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Sep 1996 22:13:59 -0700 From: gondola@deltanet.com (E.B.) Well, I saw the "Rutles" perform a year or so ago in L.A. It was in conjunction with a local Monty Python festival. The "Rutles" weren't exactly the Rutles, but Innes backed by a local Beatle-impersonator group called the Mop Tops. It was a fun show, but not the conceptual art piece I was hoping for. ;) Innes also did a short solo set, in which he played stuff like "I'm The Urban Spaceman" and "How Sweet To Be An Idiot." By the way, Innes is now a dead ringer for Patrick "Picard" Stewart...giggle. As for Innes' future plans, well, there's a new Rutles album coming on October 29th on Virgin Records. I'd say Neil is pretty busy right now! EB PS Can we please let the misheard lyrics thread die already? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 27 Sep 1996 01:27:27 -0400 From: kirshner@nicom.com (M. Would this by any chance be the 'bonus' version on the 'Element of Light' CD? I got no response when I asked where that performance was recorded. (A friend of mine also saw a Paris show by the Rolling Band, >featuring ex-Black Flag frontman Henry Rolling, one presumes.) Ha! Reminds me of the time I saw Johnathan Richman and Guest. Guest turned out to be a very sensitive plant who performed acoustic Beatles covers to the audience's cavernously yawning indifference. A more amusing Guest anecdote concerns the time I went to see the Mekons and Guest- Guest turned out to be Cynthia Plaster Caster, who read excerpts from what is indeed a very interesting diary. Anyone who was ever curious as to the bedroom proclivities of the members of Procol Harum and the size of Jimi Hendrix's, um, manhood, should be sorry they missed this :). >M. He opened as Neil Innes (playing old Bonzo Dog stuff and some great, whacked solo material), then came back in costume (with some backing musicians) as "The Rutles". I was at this show, it was great! Neil had such a great time at performing the Rutles material that he recorded a new/old Rutles album due out this fall called "Archeology" (playing off on all the Beatles Anthology stuff). Also, Neil appears on Aimee Mann's "I'm With Stupid" album, singing backing vocals on "It's Not Safe." Oddly enough "Ron Nasty" (Neil's John Lennonish character from the Rutles) is also credited with backing vocals on "It's Not Safe." Alex Token Robyn Hitchcock content: heard a live broadcast of Billy Bragg recently. He said that he and Robyn were co-headlining their tour, which means that each would play a set, then they'd return costumed in greasepaint dressed like KISS, and wrestle each other during the encores. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Sep 1996 00:46:00 -0400 From: JB Subject: Re: What did you say?
