It was hypothesised that Lobsterman was written a while after because he may have been inspired by the title. This may be supported by You & Oblivion and by Queen Elvis which both appear as album titles but not as songs until later. (I'm probably wrong.) I also notice that XTC took the titles of their last two albums from the lyrics of their immediate predecessors. No, but i do have an amusing anectode about it: A few weeks ago - actually it was the day of the big west coast power outage - my wife and I and another couple were down in Orange, California strolling through antique shops when we stopped into this little Mexican joint for lunch. They had a big sign in the window that said that Tom Hanks had eaten there recently while filming his new movie, "That Thing You Do." His favourite dish was the enchiladas. We all had a good chuckle with the waitress about Tom and the enchiladas, but none of us were chuckling 20 minutes later when we each had to find a toilet "muy rapido!" My wife was the last to find one and was in there when the power went out. Anyway, if the day comes when I meet Tom Hanks, I'll surely ask him how long he managed to hang on to his enchiladas! According to RH, the song is supposed to be the fictional band's one good tune...and it was up to him to write it. Luckily, songs then were short, so he didn't have to be good for very long. [Hah!] He said, though, that he thought that Hanks and co. had also solicited material from other songwriters, so that the producer's office was filling up with cassettes, all of them called That Thing You Do. Whether RH's tune ended up getting used or not, I don't know. I hope so, 'cos the royalties could be a lifesaver. Ask Nick Lowe! And that way, the whole stay poor/sell out dichotomy is revealed to be a false one, as Robyn enjoys material success without having to compromise artistically and we still get to see him in small venues. Sounds good to me. Then again, they probably went with Diane Warren's Freddie & The Dreamers pastiche. Another good one- my friend Dave knew someone who insisted that Mr. Mister's "Kyrie Eleison" (spelling? that doesn't look right!) was in fact "Carry A Laser". My ex-boyfriend keeps on insisting that Morrissey sings "If it's not love then it's the bong the bong the bong that will bring us together", to my everlasting annoyance (usually he mentions this when we have a new eruption of the "everybody's gonna wanna dose/doze" argument- it's doze, dammit, and I don't want to hear another word about it, specially since he didn't get his life saved by Dylan the way I did, so my word on these matters should be law :)). I'm sure we've all got a million of these. And then of course, there are the perennials: for example, the Peter Gabriel garble (the one I always thought was "she's so popular", and I even speak French, fer chrissakes). My own personal favorite, however, has to be "Shine On You Crazy Blind Man" (well, actually, that great J. Geils band smash "My Anus Is The Center Hole" comes awfully close)- which I read about in a whole book of similar hysterical lyrical misprisions entitled, fittingly, "'Scuse Me While I Kiss This Guy". Go seek this tome immediately, it provides hours of side-splitting fun for the whole family :). I still crack up to this day when I think of the illustration that goes with "Jacques the Monkey". Susan P.S. My friend Sabrina mentioned to me the other day, apropos of "Filthy Bird", that there is an old Japanese proverb "A happy fish is a hungry fish". What do you fellow feggers think of this? My own theory (I know you're all holding your breath :)) is that this is why Robyn's titles are usually so brilliant- because he thinks of a striking phrase and builds the song around that, rather than titling them after they're done. What say you, fegs? > I also notice that XTC took the titles of their last two albums from > the lyrics of their immediate predecessors. Yep. I didn't notice that until you pointed it out, but that's probably because I only listen to XTC sporadically really, since they fall into my "worthy but don't like to listen to it really" category. No - one person in five in Dunedin is a University, Polytechnic or Teachers College student, so its a healthy environment for alternative rock to flourish. Here in Dunedin everyone is in a band, was in a band, or knows someone in a band. And we have/have had The Chills, Clean, Bats, Verlaines, Straitjacket Fits, 3Ds, Alastair Galbraith, and many others less well known with ordinary names (Mink, Chug, Magick Heads, Sneaky Feelings) or extraordinary names (Horodroby X, Wreck Small Speakers on Expensive Stereos, Stuffed Husbands, Alpaca Brothers, Jim's Live Deer Recovery).
