Thanks to the Blatzman and to Jeffrey Vaska for broadening my interpretation of the Happy Bird = Filthy Bird track. I had never given much thought to it beyond seeing an image of a goofy looking bird having the absolute time of its life stomping its feet up and down and shaking its wings while occasionally dabbing its head in the mud and squacking. Celebrating in its own temporary dirtiness--for a change. I like the idea about a caged vs free bird that DAve offered, and although it may not directly make sense when listening to the massacre on cable lines, perhaps this part is a commentary on watching life from the sidelines or from behind the bars of one's cage. Consoling oneself that "it won't happen here" also lets one feel that one is actually living a life where such things are even possible--if you are confined to cage, very little of the randomness of life affects you; yet telling yourself that it won't happen to you means that for a moment you feared that it could happen (you are denying your caged life by pretending that you are subject to the same unpredictability of life as non-caged birds/people, if there are such things). To continue, Jeffrey's more detailed interpretation also makes a lot of sense to me--in case you were wondering what I thought about it ;) The idea that the bird represents our imagination and we are only happy when we express our unrepressed thoughts. Many of us have been told or have heard it said to others, "don't think such thoughts--dem's the devil's ideas," and the offending person was supposed to stop their thoughts of sex, violence, love, or whatever. We can live our lives thinking only proper things, and limit our existence in doing so--furnishing our sterile bird cages with clean plastic toys and decorations. But we are only truly happy when we allow ourselves to express the good, the bad, and the ugly--either or all of these things. Of course when we do this, we can be considered to be a filthy bird by those others who want to keep us clean and caged. Phwew! I had no intention of writing all this, but I;m glad I did--at least for my own piece of mind. What a relief. Now back to the Dylan thread (that would be part of the "ugly").
