Mentioned the Feg list to him and he sounded vaguely curious - his main question being - do the fegs write about Eric Clapton (?!). Charming, witty and a perfect English gent, what more can I say? OK, I will be committing the interview to print for BigO magazine when I can. Fegs interested in a copy, please contact me personally. Cheers, Kevin. PS. How about Robyn? I mean, the guy's got like 15 great albums; what does it take? Oh, I'm sorry; "Rage Against The Machine" are much more talented. At least book "Ben Folds Five" for the love of Pete! DeChirico is a bit too stark >and somber. > >What do you fellow fegs think?" I think this is a great thread -- I love comparing painters to Robyn. NOTE: OPINION MODE ON! I think we cannot discount the Joan Miro-like qualities of Robyn: his freeform concert dialog and whimsical lyrics (Miro did not plan his paintings, he just went at it) and his biomorphic paintings -- i.e., the Spitfire fish in the Underwater Moonlight painting. Besides, Miro's famous painting of the garden always makes me think of Robyn ("The Bones In The Ground", "My Favorite Buildings"). Therefore, I think the way Robyn writes a song (phrase first, then chords, then flesh it out) is almost identical to the way Miro painted. Robyn himself has said he prefers older, salon-style painting, as opposed to the abstract work of Don Van Vliet, so I think Robyn's still trying to find his voice as a painter, but I respect him for trying, and his essence does shine in what he's painted. Sure, the Magritte thing works, but Rene was a bit too academic or stodgy than Robyn tends to be. Robyn's rarely as brutal as Bacon ("Legalized Murder"? "Wading Thru A Ventilator"?), rarely as busily weird as Ernst ("Furry Green Atom Bowl"?), but yeah, I do see those qualities, too. >PS not to further the REM-ana here OK, then *I* will... I've never been a big REM fan, even though I was there from the beginning (just starting in college radio when "Radio Free Europe" hit, and I survived 5 years with a horribly REM-obsessed girlfriend and her likeminded best friend...). I think the first two albums are the best. Anyway, I once almost ran over Peter Buck in New Orleans, at about 3:00 a.m. on a Saturday night in New Orleans. He was crossing the street at an intersection (S. Carrollton Avenue, on his way to Tulane Ave.), having just left the Rock N' Bowl, and I was zipping down the street with my stereo blaring on my way home after a night of carousing with the gang at my favorite bar. Seems ol' Pete was dressed in a black suit, as was his galfriend, and I almost didn't see him, and the light was green and he was in the middle of the street, and, and, and, well, I stopped. Popped my head out of my sunroof, took a good look ("Izzat rilly Peter Buck?"), watched him stumble across the street, and went home. I often wonder if I should have done it. Well, he did help Uncle Bobby out a bit, though. And the next day, at the Jazz Fest, my drunken friends and I followed him around, yelling "This one goes out to the one I love" loudly and incessantly. It was 90 degrees in the shade, and he was still wearing that black suit. Sheesh. P.S. One of my hobbies is pestering Rawk Stars. So far my friends and I have insulted Metallica, Robert Smith (boy, was he stoned), Evan Dando, Trent Reznor, Juliana Hatfield, and Huey Lewis (in front of a large audience, no less). And I even know the guy who beat up Eddie Vedder in a bar in New Orleans. Heh. I was listening to the Devils Radio. You know that bit "The flowers of intolerance and hatred"? Well keep singing that line to yourself and then sing "Please don't ever speak to me too harshly" from Parsley's theme from the Herbs. Wow, eh? The man is indeed influenced by Herbs. Proof positive. Herbidacious. For those of you who don't know, the Herbs was a UK kids animation from the 70's (?) and Parsley was "a very friendly lion". If anyone's interested and can't quite remember how it goes, I can dig out Robyn's (my son) video and transcribe. I won't however be posting chords so don't ask. Robyn's work would have to be most closely related to the Bauer family pottery of the 1940's. One can see a resemblance in that both employ traditional stylings but present them through a modern design. Robyn, with his neo-psychedelia, and Bauer, with their classic pieces manufactured in the mint green and pink colors of the period, both prove that innovation and tradition are not mutually exclusive.
