A shame - it's wonderful. Strangely, on the single it says "from the album 'Stuff and nonsense'", which wasn't the name of the album, so there was a rooster aloft on their part as well. In fact, there wasn't a single one of Eddie's instrumentals on the album. RH2) Robyn has said before that "Arms of Love" was the song of his he wrote thinking of Roger McGuinn's music. But the track that always strikes me as being the most Byrdsian (in the sense of being the one that wouldn't have sounded out of place on a Byrds album) is, of all things, "Ye sleeping knights of Jesus", which would have fitted beautifully into an album like Dr Byrds and Mr Hyde. This reminded me of the one time I was able to see Billy live. There were several so-called typical American college-aged fraternity males who were sitting close by at the show (the concert was a fundraiser for a non-profit group and as such had several bands playing--Billy, Natalie Merchant who had just split from 10k maniacs, Belly, Buffalo Tom, and one or 2 others. The point is that people were not necessarily there to see Billy Bragg). Anyway, these five stereotypical frat guys were watching the proceedings and making fun of the people around them, apparently having a good time, until Billy came on. In between songs Billy added a few political comments on gun control, the NRA, and US corporate influence in politics, which prompted these boys to look at each other questioningly, shake their heads, and then sit back down in their beach chairs (it was an outdoor show) and open up sections of the newspaper, holding it in front of their faces. Oh yeah, they all were smoking cigars and wearing baseball caps and variations of khaki shorts. For the rest of Billy's set and during other times that afternoon they would get up OR return to their seats and read the paper, depending on their opinion of who was on stage and what was said. It may sound like I spent the show watching them, but its just not true--I didn't want to move any more forward (or I'd be in the area where people were passing people over their heads) or backward (or I'd be even farther from the stage). While I'm rambling, let me add that Billy and Natalie sang a couple of songs together, one of which was*Bread and Circuses* , which had to be stopped midverse because Nat forgot her lyrics. She was so into herself (or so it appeared) that she didn't seem to even care--it was like she was aloofly going through the motions of gracing the audience with her singing. Where is Robyn in all this? Hey we are all entitled to an occasional off topic post, aren't we? On the Billy Bragg bootleg *Bigmouth Strikes AGain* Billy spends a song introducing all who were playing on stage, allowing each person to take a short solo. The music tying all this together is the bass line to Groove is in the Heart. When he gets to Robyn H. he says something like "LAdies and Gentlemen, a giant walks among us ... a giant walks among us ... from the Isle of Wight, from the Isle of Wight ... Mr. Robyn HItchcock ... Mr. robyn Hitchcock, ladies and gentlemen... he's gonna take us there, he's gonna take us there..." A&M has never been known as a label that supports its artists. Warning to musicians wishing to be signed: unless you want to wallow in relative obscurity and suffer the same non-promotion as artists like Joan Armatrading, Squeeze, Suzanne Vega, Joe Jackson, RH, et al, then avoid A&M like the plague.
