Now that I think about it, this strikes me as perhaps being an interesting idea for a thread. Does it strike anyone else that way?" Hmmm... what I meant by "quintessential" was pretty much "songs nobody else could have written ever". By which I mean, hey, "Queen of Eyes" might be the best Robyn song ever-- hell, one of THE best songs ever-- but it might be argued that it has more to do, musically at least, with Robyn's influences than his OWN contribution to the pop continuum-- didn't someone JUST refer to this as "the best song Roger McGuinn never recorded"? Ditto his early Dylan-esque stuff, the persistent Barrett and Lennon nods, and the burgeoning Lou Reed thing that everyone's going on about. Those are all part of his identity as an artist, but what is he about on his own, in the dark, when nobody's looking? "Trilobyte" strikes me as something none of the above artists would've done under any circumstances. The other two? Ummm... they might not be pretty. Perhaps "Devil Mask" and "Acid Bird"-- here I actually list two songs that cram DylanMcGuinnBarrettLennonReed together in ways that would probably make every single one of them uncomfortable. This, by the way, was the thread I wanted to start with my LAST poll, which turned into a "top 10 songs" list-- I was really going for which songs distilled the essence of Robynosity, not necessarily the best ones. When I think about Robyn, there are three subjects which always come to mind: death, sealife and the devil (or extraterrestrial spirits in general). Therefore my choices for the three essential Robyn choices would fall one each into those categories: * Death: "Sounds Great When You're Dead" * Sea Life: "Bass", if only for the line "next time 'round I'll be a trout" and his couplet which rhymes "overeating" with "overheating". * Devil: "Devil's Coachman", of course * Honourable mention: "When I Was Dead" which mentions death AND the devil...I wonder if they were eating bass or prawns at the supper? (There are probably other songs that use two or three of the subjects within the lyrics, but I can't think of any right now.) If we consider the subject matters of death, sealife and the devil, and the numerous times Robyn has incorporated them into his lyrics, maybe the three 'quintessential' RH songs could be chosen from amongst that lot. Robyn, recognizes him, and insists on walking him to his destination. During this hike they discuss water, vegitarianism, time, death, lonelyness, passivity, love, and sex. My imagination is walking away with me here--I better get back to work ------------------------------ From: jlaw@qucis.queensu.ca (Jeffrey Lawrence) Date: Mon, 9 Sep 96 15:33:27 EDT Subject: Finally Got Mossy Liquor...and you can too! Well I finally gave up on the pathetic record stores we have here in Kingston (Ontario, Canada for those that care) and started surfing the net for a record store that had ML. And lo and behold CDNOw! "claimed" to have it. But after hearing all the pre-release nightmares with ML & CDNow! I figured that I should call them before just giving them my CC #. So I called them, they said "yes we have it", and took my CC # (I was convinced). Lo and behold - 1 1/2 weeks later it arrived! Why CDNow! changed it's mind in two months I cannot say, but for those people who ARE looking for ML still, CDNow! still claims to have some more (they would not tell me how many over the phone). With shipping (to Canada mind you) it cost $12.97 USD (which is about $16-17 CDN - still a good deal for new vinyl). The base price is $9.99 USD (w/out shipping). So thanks to all the Feg's who tried to help find me a copy in their local record stores - I certainly appreciated the help (maybe it's me but doesn't seem that Fegs are (sometimes at least ;-)) nicer than the average joes? Maybe it's me....) BTW, my thoughts on ML - brilliant! - in some ways I like it better than ME, in other ways not so - but the best song HAS to be "Shuffling Down The Flagstones" which totally disproves Robyn's claims that he can't play guitar. That's probably the best of all the songs released on both albums I think (but feel free to disagree! :-)) Has Terry or any other TABmaniacs TABbed out any of ML or ME yet? Cause I'll put my vote in for getting a version of "Shuffling" (maybe I will work on it this weekend ...hmmmm) -- Slainte!, Jeff " Jesus was resurrected. Elvis had irregular eating habits." - anon, from "Why Elvis is god" (this is meant tounge-in-cheek ;-)) ** JEFF LAWRENCE (jlaw@qucis.queensu.ca) ** Systems Specialist, Robotics and Perception Labs, Dept. of Computing and Information Sciences, Rm.729, Goodwin Hall, Queens University, Kingston, Ontario, CANADA, K7L 3N6 Ph:(613)545-6656 FAX: (613)545-6513 URL : http://www.qucis.queensu.ca/home/jlaw ** ALBUMS OF THE WEEK (Sept. 5 edition) **: 1) Robyn Hitchcock - Moss Elixir 2) Blur - The Great Escape 3) Robyn Hitchcock - Mossy Liquor 4) "Trainspotting" Soundtrack 5) Catherine Wheel - Chrome *************************************************** ** CHECK OUT THE CANADIAN JOB SOURCE!!!!!! ** ** http://www.irus.rri.uwo.ca/~jlaw/job_can.html ** *************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Sep 1996 15:37:43 -0500 From: mlang@inch.com (Steven Matrick) Subject: Taping Mossy Liquor for me too? >Thanks to the kind folks who have offered to tape ML!
