Essentially, if you were able to get Liquor, you've got a double album (24 tracks), so if you're a real Robyn fan you can't complain. Elixir is definitely stronger but I can't see being without Liquor. The extra tracks and alternate takes make it a "must have". At least as far as I'm concerned. I've only listened to Elixir once but I think it's up there with some of Robyn's best albums. The rush on hearing the electric "Beautiful Queen" for the first time is worth the price of admission. This is the stuff I live for. Also, the poetry of "The Speed of Things" is some of Robyn's most moving to date. This song is a classic. There are uneven spots but name a Robyn album where there aren't. The important thing is he's moving forward (I love the Egyptians as much as anybody but whatcha gonna do?) and at the same time staying true to his muse. Meaning "quirky" and "offbeat" have not been entirely left behind. And thanks to Warner Bros. for making this music accessible. IMHO Robyn's music is up there with Lennon's, it needs to be HEARD! ------------------------------ From: firstcat@lsli.com Date: Wed, 14 Aug 96 09:11:51 Subject: RE: Moss Elixir tastes like crap. The same could be said for "Clean Steve", could it not? or SIWIWAPG or any one of his acoustic songs for that matter. Just add Morris, Kimberly and Andy and you've got kickass Soft Boys tunes [I apoologize for using the term "kickass"...that's my AOR background talkin'] I agree, "I Am Not Me" could use some drums. But it occurred to me after a few listens that Hitchcock may have been attempting to recreate the feel of REM's "Let Me In" (just guitars and, towards the end, a tambourine). This song has really grown on me. In fact, I've got the words "sha la...la la...me" running through my brain right now. >Dave. Please don't be mad at me. I'm just upset. So, uh, who the hell's Michele Noach ? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Aug 96 12:58:00 -0500 From: Jim Moore Subject: Moss Elixir Since we're all chipping in our respective .02 dollars worth, I guess I'll have a go. First of all, for all those who mused about this CD being Robyn's "breakthrough album" -- forget it. I'm not even talking about the music -- just finding it was a pain in the keyster. I went to the huge Best Buy in Arlington -- and they had only ordered ONE copy. ONE COPY! It was nowhere to be found on their "new releases" display, and it failed to make the circular that goes out each week telling about the forthcoming albums for that week. Of course, the ONE COPY was already gone, so next I went over to Barnes & Nobles -- they found it on the computer but the guy at the register gave me a puzzled look and said, "Hmmm, it's new, so we should've gotten it -- but it looks like for some reason the company has decided not to even order it". I finally found a copy at the Blockbuster Music -- they had 2. I know that Robyn isn't as popular down here as he is on the coasts -- but this is ridiculous! Now, on to the music itself: 1) SINISTER, I think, is very good on Moss. It's taken me a few listens to really like it -- at first I was a bit ... surprised. A LOTof violin, but I think in the end I like it works well on this song. I think the Mossy version is better -- at least I really liked the sparse piano in the bkgd., but this version is close, very close. I give it an 8 on a 10-pt. scale. 2) I am VERY disappointed with DEVILS RADIO. Thought the Mossy version was perfect, and this version really emasculates the song, IMHO. The mixing is off -- sounds like -- in some of the songs, and this is a good example. It sounds disjointed and is yearning for a backbeat. The sax and the whistling is improved -- but that's about it. I give it a 5. 3) I almost started weeping when I heard this version of HELIOTROPE. It is ruined. Again, the mixing is bad -- Robyn's voice is too loud and grating. The poignancy and wistfulness are gone. And those background vocals!?? Why on earth did you leave them off, Robyn. This was my favorite song from Mossy, but I just can't listen to this take. I give it a 4. 4) I still haven't heard the old version of ALLRIGHT YEAH, so this sounds pretty good to me. Sounds like a song that belongs on GoF or PI. This one will probably get a little airplay on the college stations. I think it's good, but one gets bored with it pretty quickly -- no depth. I give it a 7. 5) FILTHY BIRD is brilliant. I think the arrangement blows away the live solo versions -- chorus sounds wonderful. Whoever compared this to a Neil Young tune was right on. I give this one a 9. 6) THE SPEED OF THINGS is good, but musically it's pretty bland. I think the lyrics are great -- maybe the best on the whole CD. Not much you could do to this one beyond what's on here -- it's a straighforward solo tune. I give it a 6.5. 7)BEAUTIFUL QUEEN definitely rocks. And I was the one who hated the Mossy version! Everything wrong from the other songs is right here. I give it a 10. 8) MAN WITH A WOMANS SHADOW was and is a great track and a great song. I'm just a little tired of it. But I'll pretend I've never heard it before and give it a 9. 9) I AM NOT ME ... Hmm... I like it, but it's missing something... Drums? Could have been a great song, but as is it's better than average. Guitars are great, as well as Deni's screaming violin. I give it a 6.5. 10) DECHIRICO STREET This is where I will disagree with the feg who disliked the CD so much. I think this version is pretty good -- I'm not big on horns, but they fit in nicely hear.. I guess they're saxes... I like the song a lot, but I've heard it so much that I gladly eat up this new mix. I give it a 8.5. By the way, this one IS mixed well... 11) YOU & OBLIVION Very nicely done -- straighforward, just like it should have been. Nice guitar work at the end. I give it a 9. 12) THIS IS HOW IT FEELS -- I like this version, but the song isn't one of my favorites. Would have liked to see Shadowcat here instead. I give it a 8. Add em up and avg ... overall it's a 7.5 I rated Mossy around an 8. If I could take tracks from Moss and Mossy and make my own NEW Moss, here's what I'd do (only picking 12 songs): 1. DeChirico Street - Moss Elixir 2. Devil's Radio - Mossy Liquor 3. Allright, Yeah - Moss Elixir 4. Shuffling Over the Flagstones - Mossy Liquor 5. Filthy Bird - Moss Elixir 6. Sinister But She Was Happy - Mossy Liquor 7. Beautiful Queen - Moss Elixir 8. Wide Open Star - Mossy Liquor 9. Speed of Things - Moss Elixir 10. Each of Her Silver Wands - Mossy Liquor 11. You & Oblivion - Moss Elixir 12. Heliotrope - Mossy Liquor Interesting - I picked 6 songs from each! I'm interested in hearing other feg's ideas about their "perfect Moss" CD... Thanks for letting my ideas sprout. Overall, I'm glad Robyn's new CD is out -- I know I'll get used to it after awhile. I liked Respect more and more as I got used to it. Heliotrope: I like the NetSurfer version better Speed of Things: I thought that the live version was slow and dull. It's less slow and dull, on Moss, though Beautiful Queen: This song was not meant to rock. It rocks, but it lacks the charm of the original. This song should be done as slowly and wistfully as possible. And whenever I hear the chorus, I start humming the violin bit that they didn't put in. This song needs violins.. The saxophone bit on the "Thrill me again" part was worth it, though...sound like a carousel. It was my least fave part in the live version, but I like it on this one. Go fig.
