(Obviously I skip Trash since it is cak.) I especially like Mr Deadly, Mystic Trip, Abandoned Brain and Falling Leaves (even if the brass bit is a tad cheesy). So just have a mind young fella-mi-lad next time you consider making such a flip comment." Yes, these are the best things on the record-- but I would rather listen to them as a fine, separate EP than anything on the LP as it was first released. Sorry-- I frequently flame "IH", Robyn's worst record ever by far, in response to the frequent beatings taken by "Eye", "Perspex" and "Respect", all of which rank among my faves-- and as a reminder to all of those who hate Robyn's new work that, in his so-called "glory days", he actually put out "Vegetable Friend", just to name one of many turds on that record. MG says: "MG again: Yes, my Dad, aged 80, has a Kangol cap, though he's not an early rapper (though come to think of it ...)" My dad, age 60, has one, too; he could only be considered "Old Skool" inasmuchas the Kingston Trio could be called the same. The Kangol did earn him the nickname "Gilligan" among his students a few years back... Also from MG: "You (Americans) have goths, right? Or not right?" Well, sort of. In the US we call them "kids from Orange County". (Sorry-- sort of outdated joke for those of us who could never figure out why, during the '80's, rich white surfer kids in sunny California were so enamored of pretentiously bleak electro-crap produced in the gloomy, impoverished north of England.) Outside of Orange County, this subculture never seems to have taken off here like it did in the UK-- most of those kids have either retrograded to neo-punks or "upgraded" to industrial poseurs by now-- the only visible evidence of them is the massive popularity of shit like Nine Inch Nails (to cite a phenomenon which, conversely, hasn't caught on in the UK-- for which you Brits should be VERY grateful...) "Mossy", after a few more listens: It's not uneven-- the quality is all high. It's inconsistent not in terms of quality but style, and that's fine for what it is. The great strings on "Beautiful Queen" easily redeem the extraneous orchestration on "Queen Elvis". Towards the end, all that cool slide guitar starts to unify the whole thing-- hope to hear more of it on "Elixir". This is Robyn doing what he wants to do, more than he had on the A&M records. For those of you stateside that did not get a copy yet, There are ways to get them! I thought All was lost because all of the record stores in Buffalo, NY had no copies and I could not find any in Toronto. I did pick up two copies, One for me and another for my brother in Syracuse. (I know that is not important, but...) I picked them up from Newbury Comics. They have an Internet site and they sell them for $9.99. Check out their web page and If you feel uncomfortable about ordering it over the internet call them and ask for the interactive division. All the numbers are at the web site. I Believe it is http://www.newbury.com. I think there may be a /vinyl after it, but you'll know how to find it there. It is not under new releases, you have to search the Hitchcock files for it. Secondly: I often like to torment my girlfriend with all the Robyn Hitchcock connections to many popular songs and artists - examples: Katrina and the Waves - Kimberly from the SB REM - Peter Bucks Guitar stylings "borrowed" heavily from the Mossy One Chris Novaselic (NIRVANA) - His new album is being produced by Andy EGYPT. Thomas Dolby - Blinding me with Science,Robyn played on one of his albums etc, etc You can obviously see the fun in this!? Can't you? Or am I crazy? Arrrgh! He's doing it again, he's doing it again. Someone please make him stop it. If you keep this up I'm going to stick my fingers in my ears, stamp my feet, and scream so I can't hear you. I remember hearing (and thinking at first) that it was about Kimberly, but he's said a number of nice things about Kimberly since the break up. I don't know where you are, but I know tons of goths around here: genuine, make up wearing, Depeche Mode listening, Cure loving, o-the-world-is-my-pain-oyster goths. I remember hearing a while back that Robyn's daughter was goth. I bet she feels a sadness like no other. -Eugene ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tipper Gore said to Lou Reed, "Lou Reed, how can we communicate better with our children?" My favorite Robyn album is I Often Dream of Trains though Element of Light holds up really well after all these years and continually sneaks up on it. My favorite song is Airscape and I was suprised and pleased that it won your poll so I decided to subscribe.... It amazes me that a song could be powerful enough to have that many people agree on it superiority. I recently began working for a rock promoter and look forward to the opportunity to possibly book Robyn at some huge festival or something. I am in a New York City band called the Favorite Color and we have always listed Robyn Hitchcock as our biggest influence (we use alot of open B chords). I look forward to reading everyone's opinions when the new record comes out: it seems people always disagree as to the quality of them. Yes; I compiled it. It appeared in the final issue of _Brenda_. If you want a copy, write and let me know. It'll probably be in the _Positive Vibrations_ book (working title _A Saucerful of Seafish_) which has been about to come out in the next month for the last year. N.B. 'Kagool' is properly spelt 'cagoule', and is merely French for 'Cape'. An anorak has air holes; a cagoule has none, and you usually come out of them drenched in sweat as a consequence.
