First of all, my British to American translator is on the blink again, so I didn't really realize "turn him sideways on" meant "head on". It just never connected that Zoom was two-dimensional. Second of all, does this mean there's some sort of genealogical connection between Zoom and Clarus the dogcow? Here's how I picture it... Unidentified dog #1 (carrier of rare 2D gene) mates with Unidentified cow #1 producing Clarus the dogcow, in whom 2D gene manifests itself as a rather flat overall appearance. Later, Unidentified dog #1 mates with Unidentified dog #2 producing Zoom (by sheer genetic coincidence also exhibiting the "sideways on invisible" appearance) Clarus and Zoom are bastard half brothers? Where can one go to discover the truth? ------------------------------ From: jturner@rpms.ac.uk (Jonathan Turner) Subject: 12 Bar, 6/8/96 Date: Wed, 7 Aug 96 13:08:12 BST Robyn at the 12 Bar, London, 6/8/96: Support from the Gliders, who were ex-Egyptians Sean & Morris, plus some guy called Andy, just to confuse things. Acoustic bluesy harmony type stuff, enjoyable but they need stronger songs to be remarkable. 1st set, solo acoustic, black & white shirt: Let's Go Thundering Polly On The Shore ('I learnt this from martin Carthy') 52 Stations De Chirico St ('Fletch is here, but he can't play due to a skating accident') No, I Don't Remember Guildford I Something You ('this happened almost 3 years ago) Beautiful Girl (another new one here, I think) Lysander Oceanside electric set, solo: You And Oblivion City Of Shame Autumn Is Your Last Chance Only The Stones Remain 1st encore, acoustic, plain white shirt, with Morris on percussion and vocals: Alright, Yeah (in English) Beautiful Queen Airscape Bells of Rhymney Queen of Eyes 2nd encore, acoustic, black 'Peter Byrne' t-shirt another new one about 1974 Flesh No.1/More than this (Morris allowed back for this one) The 1st set took a while to get going, but had some good moments. A fine 'You and Oblivion' was the pick of the electric set. the songs with Morris were excellent, with 'Airscape' and 'The Bells of Rhymney' ('this is a song me & Morris used to drink Guinness to 20 years ago') being worth the price of admission alone. Morris hitting the high notes on 'Airscape' like the star he is. tumultuous cheering from the previously pretty subdued audience brought Robyn back (eventually) for the last two songs - the first one a fun ramble about 1974, syd, roger and rebel rebel, sounding like a distant cousin of clean steve, and the second an impromptu take on 'Flesh No 1' - they had to think of a song that needed harmonies. I may have forgotten one or two from the 1st acoustic set, hopefully someone can fill in any gaps. The mirror ball seems to have gone for good. Seeing as how I exist in the world of the DogCow on a daily basis, I feel compelled to relate this amusing anectdote: Here at the Apple R&D Campus (1-6 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, CA, 95014). We have what we like to refer to as the "Icon Garden". It's essentially a sculpture garden containing huge representations of many familiar Macintosh icons: PaintBucket, Arrow Cursor, etc... Well, there is also a giant Clarus the DogCow in the garden, approximately 6' high by 12' long. A few April Fool's Day's ago, some enterprising soul added an additional icon to the garden - a giant turd icon right under Clarus' butt! It stayed there a remarkable three or four days before THE AUTHORITIES "caught wind" and removed it. btw, if anyone is interested in DogCow paraphernalia, they've got T-shirts and stuff down in the Apple Company Store. Let me know if you're interested, or better yet, stop by when you're in the area. Tell them employee #18729 sent 'ya!! -tc p.s. Robyn Reference: Got my Mossy Liquor the other day. I must say I love it so far, but I'll have more of an opinion after I buy a turntable and actually listen to it. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Aug 1996 13:14:09 -0700 From: Gerry Cargile Subject: Mossy Liquor in south SF BayArea? >p.s. His approach in the two pieces was as different as the bands themselves. In "SMS" he captures the character of the extended Talking Heads live lineup, and he concentrates very closely on the musicians themselves at work. By contrast, he focused on the anti-emotion of New Order in their "Perfect Kiss" film. He did film an actual performance of the song in some studio space somewhere, but he filmed just their static faces, allowing them to wander out of the frame as they moved. It was evocative without being showy or emotional. It seemed clear that he understood very well the personalities of the bands he filmed, and it would be great to see that kind of cinematic acuity brought to bear on a personality as unique as Robyn Hitchcock. I, for one, am awfully excited.
