After all he has created musically, i honestly don't know how he can still sound as good as he does. How many other artists can be around as long and not put out complete rubbish , as so many do. it's a shitty world some times(TWA) and having my pile of Hitchcock music to listen to anytime i want too makes a real difference to me. His four albums are _Reach for the Sundial_, _The Word Raven_, _Uptight Sound From The Message Tree_ and _Roar_ - _Uptight Sound_ in particular is stunning, although (or because) I agree with Jon Storey that every song sounds lifted note-for-note from 'Element of Light'. All albums are on the record label he owns, Insect Eye, and are available from Insect Eye, 12 Emmerson Street, Heworth, York, YO3 0XH, England. Mention _Positive Vibrations_ and he'll probably give you a discount or something, as he used to write for us. He also has a dab hand at thinking up catchy song titles ('I Love Myself & I Want To Fly' Aidan This review of _Uptight Sound_ was in _PVs_ #2, if anyone cares. This is - as far as I know - an entirely self-produced album, by a single artist playing all the instruments, and as such I suspected straight away that it would be either abysmal or a classic. Mostly, it falls well on the latter side. I'm not quite sure whether to file this album under 'R' or 'M'. In one case it would go between late Lou Reed and early REM, and in the other between Monty Python and Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. Both are very appropriate. This is an album of the type that the neo-psychedelicists of the late 70s - Hitchcock, Cope et al - seem to have forgotten how to make recently. The albums it most resembles, to me, are Invisible Hitchcock and the Teardrops' Wilder, and it stands up well in comparison to either. The track titles - 'Life On A Razor Blade', 'Clockwork Creatures', 'Seven Of Seeds' and eight more in similar vein - are good both musically and lyrically, if a little light on rhythm in places and occasionally pretentious. (And to be fair it has to be said that there are a couple of real turkeys here.) All the instruments are competently played, some are brilliantly played, and his voice sounds like an excellent Robyn impersonation. (Make your own minds up whether this is good or bad.) I don't know if I'll still be listening to it next year - I suspect it's the kind of album that begins to grate on you eventually - but it's certainly as good as a fair number of Robyn's albums, and beautifully packaged. (Love the cover shot!) You might not like all of it, but if you like Robyn in the Element Of Light/Underwater Moonlight mode you should like this. There's an advert for it on the back cover of this mag with the address, prices etc, or you should be able to get it at Minus Zero etc, and given how cheap it is you'd really should give it a try. There's also an earlier LP, The Word Raven, which isn't nearly as good save the stunning Teardrops-ish 'Thinking Of You' - but it's arguably worth buying for this alone. ------------------------------ From: rkarstro@cap.se Date: Mon, 5 Aug 1996 0:51:18 +0100 Subject: Strange covers Hi everyone! I've read somewhere that RH, with the Egyptians, used to play 'You're the one that I want' during rehearsals. Yep, the song from 'Grease'!!! My question is, has he ever performed it live? Since it's actually a duett (sp?) maybe he's done the song together with Mr Bragg (just guessing...). thanks in advance, Richard ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Aug 1996 14:54:43 +0100 (BST) From: M R Godwin Subject: Re: Lennon On Fri, 2 Aug 1996, Blint with a 'B' wrote: > I always heard "Somewhere Apart" as being similar to "I'm Losing You" from > _Double Fantasy_. I was listening to my new Sequel CD of Element of Light yesterday and it sounded to me as if RH was quite deliberately "doing a Lennon" on 'Somewhere Apart' in the same way that someone thought he was 'doing a Bowie' on some other tracks. Having only heard the 10-track vinyl version of EoL before, I was impressed with the bonus demo versions of 'Raymond Chandler' 'The President' and (especially) 'If you were a priest'. It seems everyone is getting into the act! Question now is, when will Rolling Stone review "Moss", and how badly will they slam it? Actually, RS has traditionally been very kind to Robyn -- so perhaps they'll give him the obligatory "three-and-one-half" stars. Except for the bit about Groovy Decoy, which I've always kinda liked. For the third time in as many albums, both the lyrics and the music seem forced, like he's writing to write, not because he has something to say. Of course all of this is wishing & hoping, but we can dream can't we? Here is a few to get the ball rolling: The remaining Beatles. (they can bring john if they want). Temporarily more relaxed than I used to be. Haven't heard either new record yet. In one of the millions of Feg postings that I'll never catch up on, Nick writes this: "I still maintain that the word "Liquor" gives the title an American flavo(u)r (to Brits) that Robyns fans on this (US) side of the pond may not be aware of." I think that's pretty interesting-- I've always been curious about how and when Robyn chooses American vs. British references. "Perspex Island" really pointed out to me that he switches off quite liberally. Note that the album title and "Birds in Perspex" both allude to something that Americans know only as plexiglass, and that it took me years to figure out what the hell an anorak was (sounded like an exotic snake to me). But then there's also "Vegetation and Dimes"-- I don't think "dime" is commonly used to refer to a 10p coin (I could be wrong), and this song also contains the line about "1-800 REAPER", which is a US toll-free number (although it doesn't really have enough digits in it). Of course, I personally believe "Vegetation and Dimes" to be a tirade against my adopted hometown of Los Angeles-- the Americanisms point to this, but the line "Real life is a crime" is the one that tears it for me. "Perspex" was recorded in LA, right? I think there are some other examples of this, but I'm jet-lagging...
