(I have in all three, before someone gets smart.) In eel-eating areas, 'Liquor' is mashed green vegetables - usually parsley - boiled, left to cool and used as a sauce, usually for fish (particularly eels). Whatever ingredients are used, it invariably tastes like vomit; hence, it greatly improves the taste of eels. He also used to be in the punk band Agnostic Front, I believe. My best guess would be that Nasty Little Man will be handling promotion of Robyn's tour. The version on Netsurfer Ghost is tinny-sounding and has lots of talking. *And* a horrible screeling noise, reminiscent of chalk on a blackboard. Therefore, I am delighted to have a clean copy of this song...it's by far my favorite on Mossy Liquor. You really don't like any of his instrumentals, not CWP, or Shuffling Over the Flagstones, or Heartful of Leaves or that really old one (what's the name, Dwarfbeat/Muriel's Hoof?)? why? do you think they're boring? would you like them better if they had words? or you just think they're "not good"? I'm curious....could be we have opposite tastes, since I got tired of DeChirico St (Netsurfer Ghost and What's In-Store had 3 versions of this song, and even my high boredom threshold couldn't save this one for me). -cheri ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Jul 1996 08:13:28 +0800 (SST) From: Kevin M Mathews Subject: MOSSY HEAVEN MOSSY LIQUOR just happens to be the first vinyl record I've bought in maybe five years - and it's gorgeous, innit? My fave tracks are Alright, Yeah ( love that slide ); Beautiful Queen ( the violin is oh so psychedelic ), The Devil's Radio ( Stalin & Mao on the same lyric sheet ), Heliotrope ( beautiful Brian Wilson-class vocal tag ). I certainly hope MOSS LIQUOR can live up to the expectation generated by MOSSY. And to the fegs who queried the sound quality of MOSSY - it is great - warmer than CD without the crackles because its brand new. The quality of my pressing of Mossy and other recent vinyl releases is outstanding. You may need a new cartridge, clean your old one, or check the setup of your turntable (tracking weight, anti-skate). The needle should sit deep in the groove to minimize surface noise. A dirty or old needle; or too light a tracking weight; or a lower quality turntable will give you much more noise. Sorry to bug the whole list with this, but I thought if any other feg was having trouble getting great sound from ML that this would help. Oh, sure, they make kind of nice dinner music, but that's not why I buy Robyn Hitchcock albums. I like to hear him sing. I like the things he sings about. That distinctive quirkiness--the Genius of Hitchcock--just doesn't come through on his instrumentals...it could be *anybody* playing. (the Soft Boys tunes work better for me because of the odd/changing time signatures...also, more instruments means more things going on). Yes, I think I'd enjoy the instrumentals a lot more if he at least told some sort of story over them. But then he doesn't make records for my enjoyment, does he? Opposite tastes? hmmm...the way I see it, the opposite of instrumental is a cappella. How do you feel about "Uncorrected Personality Traits" and "The Can Opener"? :) russ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jul 96 18:03:00 -0800 From: Russ Reynolds Subject: MOSSY HEAVEN > And to the fegs who queried the sound quality of >MOSSY - it is great - warmer than CD without the crackles because its brand >new. mine has a few pops, though. Warners didn't put much effort into making a quality LP. It may be thinner than the "dynaflex" records from the bad old days. Real analog mavens (not me) usually have a record cleaning machine and clean new vinyl before it is ever played. If you can find a place that cleans records (high end audio or used record shop) it might be worth a couple of bucks to give it a try. - Steve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Jul 1996 15:09:11 +1200 From: james.dignan@stonebow.otago.ac.nz (James Dignan) Subject: Rock prehistory Mighty Mike mused: >Special announcement for Trilobite-loving fegs planning on going to this >one. So I went to the more convenient Tower Records in Fairfax and had them order it for me. Tower employees seem less likely to give me that "you look over 30 so you're probably going to ask for Michael Bolton records" attitude. And they did have "The Golden Prince Rides Again" Robyn zine. If it is too much of >a hassle, don't bother with it. Griffith- (and fegs) Here is the story of Uncarved Pumpkins. I had decided about a month ago to redo the whole damn thing, seeing as how many of the songs on UC had been released on You & Oblivion. So, I made a whole new one, Uncarved Pumpkins 1.1, and it was alright, but I found myself missing the old songs, and I found out that Bayard had better cleaner versions of many of the songs I used (some on DAT!). So, wiped out after making the revision, I posted a note to the list saying that I was not going to touch UC after all. It would remain unchanged. But last week, after experiencing a surge of energy (surprising, for me) I tackled UC again. I dropped 2 of the songs: The Ruling Class, which was a poor quality recording, and Bright Fresh Flower, which was a studio track (which defeated the whole purpose of my Uncarved Pumpkins tape, but I liked it so much at the time I compiled it--that I HAD to include it) and it will soon be released on the A&M Greatest Hits anyway. In their place I put 3 songs: Someday, Someway (a live song from 29 Jul 88 McCabe's), Devil's Coachman (detuned Beach Boys version) 7 Jul 90 New George's San Rafael, CA, and an improv (impression of Neil Young) called "Don't Maim the Children" from May 90 Belly-UP, San Diego, CA. I re-did the entire tape, making cleaner edits, using the cleanest recordings I have (I had gotten better sounding copies of some of the shows since first compiling UC). The result is very pleasing, at least to me. I got to keep the cool live renditions of these songs that used to be rarities (September Cones, You've Got, etc.) and still have room for a great unrel. song (Someday, Someway) a bizarre version of a Robyn staple (Devil's Coachman), and a fun 20 second impression of Neil Young. Yahoo! I have about 5 requests in hand (people who sent me money and everything) for Uncarved Pumpkins. I am retaping these tapes using the new version, and should be sending them out end of this week or beginning of next week. I have no time to make more UC tapes--therefore we should tree it, and maybe people who are numbered in the above mentioned 5 requests will find it in their hearts to make copies for anyone else that wants them. The rest of the rarities will be handled by Bayard. I am donating some rarities to him for HIS compilation, which will be made on DAT and then dubbed on audio for higher fidelity! Cool! Hope this info helps. Now recording: Mossy Liquor! I had no idea how shitty my turntable cartridge is, but there are very few pops and crackles so far, so it couldn't be TOO bad. Ciao, John. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The End of this Fegmaniax Digest. *sob* .
