"I've gotten used to being on stage by myself," he said. "I used to suffer from very bad stage fright. The whole thing with the band made me very nervous. When it's only me in the dressing room, I'm much more calm." A quirky singer-songwriter who has been making slightly surreal records since the late 70's as a solo artist and as a frontman for both the Soft Boys and the Egyptians, Hitchcock will release his latest effort, "Moss Elixir" (Warner Bors.), on Aug. 13. "I'm not a public figure," Hitchcock said from his London home. "If anyone recognizes me on the street, it's a terrible shock. I'm still unknown to a lot of people, but that's not a bad thing. As long as you're alive and in reasonable comfort, that's all that matters." Preceding the release of "Moss Elixir," Warner Bros. this week issued a limited-edition vinyl-only compilation album titled "Mossy Liquor (Outtakes and Prototypes)," containing several alternate versions of songs from new album. "I would like to think my work will last," said the 43-year-old Hitchcock, who launches a co-headlining tour with _Billy Bragg_ in October. "But I just don't know how artists judge their work. I was actually a bit disappointed in a few tunes, specially "As Lemons Chop". Yikes. But "Beautiful Queen" rocks the world, as even my non-feg significant other was forced to admit. I also really dug "DeChirico Street", 'Each of Her Silver Wands", and yes, "Trilobite" (if this version is worse than the live versions, I'd be happy to get my hands on them :)). I think that, over here, the word "liquor" is only used in a technical or legal sense (as in "Licensed to sell alcoholic liquors and beverages"). We would normally say "drink", "booze", "alcohol", "spirits", or the actual name of the drink. The vendor is always an "Off-licence", never a "Liquor store" - an off-licence being a licence to take the stuff away, as opposed to consuming it on the premises. - Mike (hic!) Also, I believe SBM used to be Motor Boys Motor, correct? MBM was one of the other groups featured on the Albion Flexi sampler that included "Grooving on an Inner Plane" I think the Messiahs get a mention in the liner notes for one of the Rhino reissues as well. While looking at the fegmaniax page, I read the article from Bilboard. In that article, a Joel Oberstein of Tempo Music & Video is quoted for the story. I was surprised when I read the article that Tempo is a Simi Valley based company. I live in the notorious Simi Valley. Tempo is a decent store, but I find it amusing that Billboard chose to get a quote from the director of retail operations about Robyn Hitchcock. I went in the store Friday - NO ROBYN HITCHCOCK ANYWHERE (no Soft Boys either). I had not been in that store for several months, now I remember why. Next, I went to The Wherehouse (I had not been in there in two years) across the parking lot from Tempo. Not to my surprise, no RH - although I did see PI, GoF, and QE in the used bin. About a month ago, I went to a music store in a mall (this I rarely do). Just for laughs, I looked for some RH. Of course, I did not find any. However I did find an empty slot for some guy named "Robin Hitchcock". I am curious to see how Warner Bros. will promote RH. I would like to be able to go into a store, and find his music - but I don't want an all out media blitz where I see him everywhere (ie the RH Happy Meal at McDonalds with a free plastic toy inside - although it would be funny). enough ranting.....I'll go now. cheers griffith ______________________________________________________________ Griffith Davies hbrtv219@dewey.csun.edu ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Jul 1996 09:20:32 -0700 From: Nick Winkworth CC: Vyrna Knowl Subject: Re: Mossy Observations Our illustrious listmeister mused: > > is liquor spelled liquour in old blighty? > Sadly (now that I have had a chance to check my copy of "The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary" over the weekend) I must report that even the English have no room for an extra "u" in liquor. This means of course that RH completists cannot look forward to a separate British English release. BTW I take Bayards point that the name is intended a pun on Moss Elixir (just say it fast enough) - but I still maintain that the word "Liquor" gives the title an American flavo(u)r (to Brits) that Robyns fans on this (US) side of the pond may not be aware of. ~ One more Mossy Observation: I too wish I could play guitar like Richard Thompson. I am significantly farther from my goal than Robyn, however! ~ On another topic - how is the quality of your ML pressing? I haven't bought any new vinyl for years, but everyone tells me that LP quality is much higher now thanks to lower volumes and better quality vinyl (typically aimed at the audiophile market). Sadly, in this case I have not found this to be the case. I can definitely hear some surface noise in quiet passages and between tracks, and while I have many older records which do this, I also have plenty which don't. -n ------------------------------ From: msandonato@kpmg.com Date: Mon, 29 Jul 96 14:36:11 EST Subject: Warner Bros.
