At Russ's suggestion, here's what the item had to say: "Robyn Hitchcock, on many of whose records Peter Buck had played) told Mojo about the group's writing technique: 'They record about 40 chord sequences and then Michael comes in with his notebook, writes words for about half of them and they throw out the rest. There's a very high casualty rate. But there's a lot of advantages to working this way. For example, Mike and Peter wrote _Shiny Happy People_ - Mike wrote the chords on an acoustic, Peter did the electric guitar embroidery. But one songwriter alone, writing the chords, mightn't have imagined Peter's guitar or the kind of lyrics Michael came up with. In fact, Michael took the track away and turned up later saying "It's called _Shiny Happy People_, and it goes like this!" And Mike said "You can't possibly call it _Shiny Happy People_! What kind of a title is that?" And he had to admit eventually that Michael was right.'" (from "REM" by Pete Hogan, in "Rock & Roll Adventures", Rolling Stone/Omnibus Press) I thought Buck had only played on PI, QE and Y&O... Did I get it wrong again, or does three count as "many"? The album credits Alan Civil as the horny Frenchman, er, French Horn player on that. I believe McCartney played trumpet on "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey". His father was a big band trumpeter and McCartney the younger may have picked up a thing or two from 'is pappy. I remember reading that Neil Aspinall, the Beatles' road manager, played the odd horn on a few things, but without looking it up, I couldn't tell you which ones. However, I do know that Brian Jones played (uncredited) sax on "Lady Madonna" and "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)". Now, can you name the Beatles' songs on which "Beatle Paul" played drums? Which brings me to Robyn... We all know that Robyn is a fabulously talented musician who has played guitar, piano, MOOG synthesizer (perhaps a mellotron or two), bass (not "Bass", though he may have played one of those at one time, too), and harmonica on his albums. Does anyone know if the man can play drums? or sax? or anything else? These one-man band types (McCartney, Rundgren, Metcalfe, et al) have always amazed me with their skill and proficiency on any instrument you throw into their hands. I wonder if Robyn is similarly skilled? It was supposed to be for fans in the SouthEast of England only - though I live in Leeds (North) I get the south-east-only stuff having complained to Mushy about discrimination. Apparently Robyn wants to discourage people like me who are preapred to travel long distances to see him, can't think why, but thats what I was told. Anyway with a true freedom-of-info-internet spirit, I shall tell the world what it says. Quote: Hurrah, here is direct word from Robyn about another SPECIAL EVENT "On Saturday August 10th I will be hiring a 1939 open-topped double decker bus to drive around various backroads of the western tip of the Isle Of Wight. This is to mark the release, three days later, of "Moss Elixir," my new record. The idea is to meander around various old leafy haunts and cliff tops, stopping every so often for me to sing. We should wind up in a high place, from where we can watch the sun set. In order to cover costs, and because space is limited to 40 tickets, there is a nominal charge of five pounds per ticket. These will be hand drawn and numbered by myself, and must be shown to the conductor on boarding the bus. Departure is at 5.15, and we should be back by 8.30pm. Might be sooner, depending on how long it takes the sun to set. Obviously this will be at the mercy of the weather. If it is pouring with rain, the bus trip will have to be postponed, as they say in the trade. But I will in that case perform a set in the abandoned railway station canteen." Unquote Deal is, you send cheque payable to Robyn Hitchcock to usual UK address, which is sent back uncashed if you don't get drawn for a ticket. Quote If there is an overwhelming demand for space we may consider revealing the route and people can simply drive around in their own vehicles. When the bus stops, Robyn will either perform on the upper deck of the bus or on solid ground outside, but he is unlikely to sing downstairs. Just grabbed this from the Addicted To Noise Web site, (http://www.addict.com/html/lofi/MNOTW/display-news.cgi?96-07-23). For those who aren't up on or able to get Amurican TV, "Party of Five" is (IMNSHO) a sappy Fox network TV show about a buncha kids who lost their parents and have to Deal With The Wicked World All By Themselves. Sounds like Warner Brothers work to me, too. +++ begin quoted text +++ "Party Of Five" Soundtrack Due in '96 Rickie Lee Jones has recorded a very funky version of the '60s Donovan hit, "Sunshine Superman." With harp, slide guitar and an old-style Hammond organ in the mix, the track sounds like it could have been cut by the original Little Feat. It's expected to show up on a soundtrack for the Fox series "Party of Five" due out later this year. Also expected to appear on the album is a brand new version of Tom Petty's "Freefalling," that Stevie Nicks is currently in the studio completing. Other artists believed to be participating in the project are Tori Amos, Robyn Hitchcock, former American Music Club leader Mark Eitzel, Juliana Hatfield and Syd Straw. Oh yeah, '60s folkie Judy Collins has recorded an amazing version of the old folk song, "Sally Go 'Round the Roses," and a new artist named Holly Palmer delivers a cover of Dylan's "All I Really Want To Do." +++ end +++ Me, I'm hoping Robyn records "When I Was A Kid" or "Old People Scream" for it. +++++++++++++++++ Internet Publishing Specialist + Gene Hopstetter, Jr. + Cadmus Digital Solutions +++++++++++++++++ http://cjsinet.cadmus.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Jul 96 14:53:00 -0500 From: Jim Moore Subject: Mossy Get I've got no working turntable, but I did get my grubbies on a copy of Mossy Liquor -- right here in Arlington, Texas, home of the about-to-choke-in-the-2nd-half-of-the-season- like-they-always-have-ever-since-they-started-because-they're the-only-team-in-the-American-League-to-never-make-the- playoffs-but-I'm-still-a-fan-no-matter-the-heartbreak-Texas Rangers Baseball Club, not to mention scores of rabid, angry drivers whose sole purpose in life is to pee people off -- except that I did mention that.
