All the chat so far seems to be about the US release. On Saturday 13 July, I enquired at three major record record stores in Bath (HMV, Rival and MVC). None of them knew anything about the record, let alone about a release date. - Mike Godwin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Jul 1996 09:16:31 -0500 From: Tim Bugbee Subject: violinists, cont. others string-players of note: Brian Hageman - Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 aside from playing guitar and mandolin, he also plays viola to astounding effect. for those not familiar w/ the feller's oeuvre, i suggest checking them out immediately, starting w/ _strangers from the universe_. nothing at all like robyn's stuff, but the more free-thinking of you may enjoy this. Eyvind Kang - has contributed to some of the latest Sun City Girls stuff, and also has a solo disc which I haven't heard on the Tzadik label. Alastair Galbraith - new zealand-based minstrel, who sometimes augments his guitar/voice compositions w/ violin. also colloborates w/ fellow kiwi Bruce Russell (Dead C) in the experimental/noise combo Handful of Dust. Recordings from Alastair have come out on Drag City, Next Best Way, Siltbreeze, Feel Good All Over, Corpus Hermeticum, Raffmond, Roof Bolt and Xpressway. aside to Rex's comments re: Jane Scarpantoni. She was the one responsible for the great cello sound on Bob Mould's first solo CD, as well as (I think) Nirvana's _in Utero_. She also played as a full-time band member of Tiny Lights. tim ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Jul 96 12:59:15 CDT From: Truman Peyote Subject: Violoin Ok, ok kids.......I should have thought a little bit before I wrote that p.s., but hasn't it started a lovely thread? :) A few notes- violins, I sez. Not electric violas or cellos or anything else. Also a question about genre- isn't it bending the rules just a wee bit to refer to the Incredible String Band and the Kronos Quartet as ROCK bands? Not to mention the Charlie Daniels Band, since what they play isn't exactly rock and roll and the instrument played in that band is known as a fiddle :). Personally I like whoever that was that did the "plink plink" type violin sounds on some of those old Buddy Holly records (most obviously "Raining In My Heart"), but I wouldn't call the guy a rock violinist exactly, as most likely he was some fellow from the local symphony trying to pick up extra bucks. Yes - on the Sugar mailing list, Paul Hilscof(sp?) had a live tape of his (a live Bob Mould live show from 1991) somehow become "The Calm Before The Storm" on a boot CD - it does happen.... ------------------------------ From: TchdnJesus@aol.com Date: Mon, 15 Jul 1996 17:06:58 -0400 Subject: Re: violinists, cont. (Third Ear Band did the soundtrack for Polanski's _MacBeth_, but I don't know if House was with them then.) He was also in David Bowie's band for the _Heroes_ tour. Billy Currie - Ultravox, also toured with Gary Numan Darryl Way - Curved Air and his own band called Wolf Eddie Jobson - also a stint with Curved Air as well as Roxy Music, UK, Jethro Tull and a couple of solo albums Jerry Goodman - Flock, the original Mahavishnu Orchestra, and a couple of solos Graham Smith - String Driven Thing and Van der Graaf Generator Dave Arbus - East Of Eden and a guest stint on the Who's "Baba O'Riley" Mark Wood - I only know of one album of his, _Voodoo Violince_ but he does a wonderful job of emulating the heavy metal guitar sound without using guitars Ric Grech - Family and Blind Faith Fred Frith - primarily know as a guitarist, but he also plays violin and if we stretch the definiton to include viola players as well we get: John Cale - Velvet Underground, extensive solo career and quite a few sessions (Tax Free, first Stooges album, a lot of Nico albums) Tony Conrad - former bandmate of Cale's back before the Velvet Underground. His _Outside The Dream Syndicate_, recorded with Faust, is classic Death Drone. His recent album with Pythagoras in the title isn't quite as good. He's also an avant garde filmmaker. His _Flicker_ is forty minutes of alternating white and black light that opens with a warning that epileptics should leave the theater. Hell, many notes! -Brooks ------------------------------ From: RxBroome@aol.com Date: Mon, 15 Jul 1996 23:20:52 -0400 Subject: Violin, cont'd (piss-poor Robyn content) It has been said: "If there are any Wonder Stuff fans out there wondering what Martin (Bell)'s up to, he's actually on tour with the Cure right now as their keyboard tech." God, that's depressing. More violin wrapup (my initial list was composed in a drunken stupor, which should tell you how much fun I am at parties): I was originally kinda just sticking with the good stuff, but I guess it's undeniable that Dexys Midnight Runners sold a lot of records with a bizarrely violin-based sound. Also the occasionally interesting Waterboys had some violin / fiddle during their faux- Celtic days. As many instruments as the terrific Pogues had in their regular lineup, they never had a full-time violinist... but they did rather unobtrusively feature one from time to time, notably on "Dirty Old Town". There's also a really cool lead at the end of "Down All the Days" that sounds kinda like a violin and kinda like a mandolin... perhaps a mandolin played with an e-bow? A rebec? Also, bassist Leslie Langston has a violin credit on at least one Throwing Muses record-- "Hunkpapa", I think, evident only on "Dragonhead" and replete with harmonic feedback. Also 'twas said: "There's a (Dolly Mixture) CD called "Demonstration Tapes" on Royal Mint, which is a label run by a Bob Stanley from St. Etienne." Lost '80's girl-pop endorsed by St. Etienne? Must have this. Anyone seen it stateside? Rex who named his cat "Etienne" because it is... a "Calico" cat. ------------------------------ From: cliffl@gatwick.geoquest.slb.com Date: Tue, 16 Jul 1996 08:08:27 +0100 Subject: Session Egyptians All, Last week someone was asking about other peoples records that had been graced by the presence of one (or more) of the Egyptians. Although I don't really like to breath life into threads once they have passed over to the other side, I don't think that anyone mentioned that Morris (and Matthew Seligman) played on Alex Chilton's "Live In London" LP (I only noticed while I was playing it last night). He's pretty good too, considering that they only rehearsed "three times". Let's give it a decent burial now, Regards, Cliff. ============================================================ Cliff Lovelock Customer Support - Geoscientist *GeoFrame Support* cliffl@gatwick.geoquest.slb.com Schlumberger GeoQuest Voice: +44 (0)1293 55 60 15 Gatwick - U.K. Fax: +44 (0)1293 55 65 51 ============================================================ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The End of this Fegmaniax Digest. *sob* .
