Every time I've tried convincing people I'm Bob Mould in order to get free stuff, I've either been imprisoned or institutionalized. My guess is that the authorities are wary of anyone who'd *want* to be Mr. Mould. If his lyrics are any indication, he's a fairly unhappy individual. Always breaking up with somebody, and sitting on the edges of dams, and seeing peoples lips moving but only hearing "Blah blah blah"...sounds like a rough life. Better results might be obtained by masquerading as other talented guitarists: Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Ricky Wilson (most will assume you are dead and, naturally, harmless) Adrian Belew or Robert Fripp (most will assume you are insane and, naturally, harmless or amusing) Billy Bragg (most will assume you are a socialist and, naturally, harmless. Alternately, they will accept your view that property is theft) Andy Partridge (most will assume you've already heard every album every recorded commercially, and deserve a chance to hear something new) Peter Weller (most will assume you're that guy from Robocop or Naked Lunch and, naturally, be very afraid.) Nick Ronson (most will sympathize, given that you're named after a lighter fluid) Further suggestions? ------------------------------ From: RxBroome@aol.com Date: Wed, 10 Jul 1996 01:10:34 -0400 Subject: Bobbies Hitchcock and Mould Someone sez: "Bob Mould has reportedly made a habit of simply walking out of stores with bootlegs he's discovered in his travels. Somewhat classier way of handling it, I suppose. What're you going to do? "Hi, I'm Bob Mould, and you're stealing from me. 'Bye."" I suspect that Mr. Mould-- one of several of my Uncle Bobbies-- is particularly bitter towards bootleggers because he's been screwed numerous times by big corporations having pillaged his catalogue. He was particularly pissed about the Virgin release of "Poison Years", a comp that was comprised of "hits" and outtakes from his brief solo career on that label-- two albums as opposed to, say, Robyn's four for A&M-- and also none to pleased with Warners' posthumous Husker Du release "The Living End". The guy just doesn't like anyone else controlling how he's represented to the public as an artist. Can't blame him. The Mould / Hitchcock parallel is interesting, actually. Both are '80's rock icons who never got the commercial success due their influence(s), and both continue to do their own underappreciated things. I think Bob Mould has been slightly more privileged than Robyn, in that nobody tried to sell him out as early as Robyn... Husker Du got to pretty much du what they wanted from 1980- 1987 on both SST and WB, while Robyn was the victim of attempted commercialization as early as 1982 and "Groovy Decoy". Thus Robyn has a slightly more laissez-faire attitude towards what's done with recordings of his work. Bob Mould never got to put his own name on a record until 1988. It's even done in the proper IODOT green and gold. Features an interview the magazine published two issues ago (the issue that featured the flexi) and some real good scans of some of his comics and cover art. Oh, and for those of you in the USofA who were/are interested in the Ptolemaic Terrascope's double CD "Succour" (which features Robyn's "She Was Sinister But She Was Happy") but didn't buy it because it was an expensive and hard-to-get import (like me), it's to be re-released domestically pretty soon, by Flydaddy records. +++++++++++++++++ Internet Publishing Specialist + Gene Hopstetter, Jr. + Cadmus Digital Solutions +++++++++++++++++ http://cjsinet.cadmus.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Jul 1996 17:39:57 +0100 (BST) From: M R Godwin Subject: Re: Billboard article--July 6, 1996 Is it just me, or do the following RH quotes sound pretty ungrateful for the great work done by Morris and Andy (and Roger)? - Mike Godwin >(From 'Moss Elixir' Marks WB Debut Without Egyptians by Craig Rosen) > Says Hitchcock, "It's really sad for bunches of men over 40 to go > around together... after a certain age, you just don't want to go around > with your legs tied together anymore." > > "When you have a band, you have to find work for them. Here's the last verse: "Nervous children making millions: You owe it all to them Power trios with big-ass deals: You opened for it then I can see it all with my one good eye For a start take two Grant Harts & call me when you die" I suspect that telling someone you were Grant Hart wouldn't have much effect. -tc p.s. Not an unreasonable statement at all. John Lennon said something similar about the Beatles breakup. People stop hanging around their college chums on a daily basis when they graduate...that's what memories and class reunions are for. Must be the same for a bunch of guys in a rock group unless you are as pathetic as the Stones. > > > > "When you have a band, you have to find work for them. If you have a > > drummer, you can't say, 'I only want drums on three songs out of 12.'" Robyn is just looking to control his creative output. He has come to the point where, if he wants only have his voice and guitar on a track, he doesn't want to feel an obligation to let Andy and Morris add their bass and drum tracks. Seems reasonable to me. If he wants to work with others, say Deni Bonet, he doesn't have to clear it with "the band" first. > > "Bands are noisy and expensive things," Hitchcock says. "And humans are > > costly animals to feed and carry around." Robyn doesn't want to blow his voice out in a live rock 'n' roll type setting. Fine by me...the acoustic Robyn is the best. His voice has never sounded better live than in his recent post-Egyptians shows. And it IS costly to keep a band together. They do need a salary, hotel rooms on the road, etc. Robyn solo is more cost effective! I don't think Andy and Morris feel Robyn is "ungrateful". They had a good run together, and it was most likely a mutually agreed upon decision to disband. IMHO, of course. hal ------------------------------ From: "Glen Uber" Date: Wed, 10 Jul 1996 14:36:18 -0700 Subject: Re: Free Bootlegs On Jul 9, 9:31pm, Aaron Finkelstein wrote: > > Better results might be obtained by masquerading as other talented guitarists: > Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Ricky Wilson (most will assume you > are dead and, naturally, harmless) > Adrian Belew or Robert Fripp (most will assume you are insane and, > naturally, harmless or amusing) > Billy Bragg (most will assume you are a socialist and, naturally, > harmless. On another note, when I was younger and a bit less informed, I picked up "A Soft Boy No More" and "The Man Who Invented Himself", which I'm now getting rid of. They've been around long enough. Anyone's welcome to them, let me know. But again, I have no doubt these things are monitored. I've been doing publicity for a number of large named bands, and have subscribed to their lists to keep people informed about venue changes, in-stores, etc...but also to find out what's being said, who's saying it and so on. Thankfully though, all the bands concerned like the idea of tapers, and are friendly enough with fans and people afterwards to create a feeling of trust. And quite a number of these people send copies on for the band as well. As you know if you're either subscribers to the magazine or followed the debate in the archives, the tape trading arms of _Positive Vibrations_ and _Brenda_ were closed down in very acrimonious circumstances by Robyn's lawyers in 1993 and we haven't traded tapes since. Sincere have hassled people about trading tapes of live shows ever since they took over as Robyn's management. b) In the EU, at least, the trading and recording of live tapes _is_ illegal, and punishable by disproportionately severe penalties (a leftover of a period when the IRA ran a record bootlegging operation). You can not only have the tapes distressed; you can have _massive_ fines (well up into the L10,000s). People can and have been prosecuted for making and trading live tapes. (As widely reported in the music press, someone was recently bankrupted by Ray Davies for trading tapes of his 1995 solo tour.) Should you be counting on Robyn's goodwill, write to me and I can forward testimony from people who've had tape recorders smashed, been thrown out of gigs and been beaten up by security, Howie the roadie, or band members (usually Andy).
