CRD: Autumn Sea ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Jul 1996 06:03:13 -0700 From: afink@ix.netcom.com (Aaron Finkelstein) Subject: Re: ROBYN & BILLY LIVE Mr. Knox is correct. It was released under the title "Big Mouth Strikes Again" (1992 KTS Records - Italy, CD: KTS060), only it wasn't so much a duet as a massive ensemble jam that (thankfully) included very little of the actual song. Andy Metcalfe also takes a respectable sitdown as pianist. There's no personnel listing, but it sounds as if that's the only track they play on. Fairly good show, especially hearing versions of songs that sort of laid down and died on "Don't Try This At Home." Apparently, Polygram will have the new Bragg album. Maybe they'll give him enough money to spring for another effects pedal. He seemed to be having such fun with the first one... They also made that Mountain Stage appearance, although they didn't actually play together as I recall. "It doesn't matter how many songs you write, Robyn's always like three or four albums ahead of you. Life's like that sometimes." --Billy Bragg I can't think of two performers I've enjoyed more consistently, so it'll be quite an experience to see them together. ------------------------------ From: SPIFFINGNY@aol.com Date: Mon, 8 Jul 1996 16:08:33 -0400 Subject: Big Brother There's not a doubt in my mind that that letter was in reference to the Moss pre-release casette, which is an illegal action. However, the trading and recording of live tapes is NOT illegal, as long as the material is not sold or manufactured without the consent of the artist. Bootlegging is the act of manufacturing, and many bands and artists and acting quickly to wipe it out. There have beena number of stores in New York, like Revolver records raidied recently for sale of "live import fan club CD's", and bands do not see a cent of these sales. The warehouses in Germany have been particulary susceptible to seizure. If you like an artist, don't support such things...seek out live tapes! Why do you think the Grateful Dead have so many fans, 'cause of the tapes, it's a remarkably cheap form of promotion, and each show is unique, for any band. No Hitchcock gigs are ever the same. Tape and trade on. Big Brother can bite me. ------------------------------ From: RxBroome@aol.com Date: Mon, 8 Jul 1996 23:27:06 -0400 Subject: I. Robyn lift?; II."She Said"; III. Rhino comp? I: Just heard a song on the radio by, erm, No Doubt, and I think that it contained the words "a seldom-fading ritual", which strikes me firstly as a pretty strange thing to say, and secondly, given this band's pronounced lack of lyrical originality, as a potential sanitized jacking of Robyn's line about the "palpitating ritual" in "If You Were a Priest". II. The "She Said She Said" time signature debate is a wash. Like I said, my band plays this and does it correctly, but we do it by a combination of counting individual beats and having heard the song ten million times. The confusion is intentional and thematic, meant to evoke both being on acid and being sick of hearing someone drone on about a subject that's basically incomprehensible... so trying to quantify the time signature sure oughtta make you feel like you've never been born. Which it does. III. Re: the press release. It includes this: " Rhino also has a Hitchcock retrospective on tap for early 1997." What the hell is this? What's gonna be on it? Rhino put out a promo- type compilation along with the catalog re-release, and it was bollocks-- I mean shite-- um, I mean, really useless except as a promo / primer thing (I'm sure many of you have seen it). What else could they put on it, though? I mean, I bitched about the inaccuracy of the A&M comp being entitled "Greastest Hits" on the basis of the short shrift it gave the first 12 years or so of Robyn's career, but at least it has some worthwhile nuggets on it-- I mean, after "Y&O" and the bonus tracks, is Rhino sitting on anything else of interest, or are they just going to repackage the aforementioned wretched promo item (as "Greatest Hits Vol. 0.5") ? Then again, if they do such a compilation, they'd be really remiss not to include the "Acid Bird"'s and "If You Were a Priest"'s and "Airscapes"'s and "Heaven"'s... On the perversely interesting side, we might have an unprecedented situation: overlapping "Greatest Hits" collections, given that the Rhino catalog includes the "Eye" tapes, which rest squarely in the middle of the A&M years. Which is almost as weird as the fact that "Alright Yeah" is being released in two versions on two albums by two labels within one month, one a label debut and one a post-mortem quickie... Rumor has it that the recent New York raid (425,000 "pirate" discs in two Greenwich Village warehouses) was sparked by complaints on the part of Hootie and the Blowfish's legal representatives. Mediocre college band sells 12 million albums and complains about bootlegging of their shows. Things are going to get worse. When successful (and probably somewhat powerful) mainstream artists put the word out that they want this stopped, they'll probably get results. Bob Mould has reportedly made a habit of simply walking out of stores with bootlegs he's discovered in his travels. Somewhat classier way of handling it, I suppose. What're you going to do? "Hi, I'm Bob Mould, and you're stealing from me. 'Bye." I can understand an artist not wanting live shows that contain (as yet) unreleased material, for eventual copyright reasons, but if thousands of fans go to great lengths to acquire obscure live recordings and distribute them in a vast underground network, don't you think you'd find that a little complimentary? Doesn't it mean that they want to hear more of your work? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Jul 96 10:26:00 -0800 From: Russ Reynolds Subject: Free Bootlegs! <> Hey, I'll have to try this! --russ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Jul 1996 16:30:39 -0400 (EDT) From: Terrence Marks Subject: CRD: Autumn Sea It may be off in a few places..it's a *very* nice song...easy too.
