Subject: Moss Elixir Hi Fegs, I just wanted to mention that I landed an official Warner Brothers advance tape of Moss Elixir this week, and played it eagerly last night. Having not seen RH live as recently as many of you (not since the Respect tour), the new songs aren't as familiar to me as to many of you. But, upon first listen, I must say I'm underwhelmed. RH is very much in his "sweet, ethereal" mode -- very little of the dark, sinister Syd style. He's singing in his high register for the most part, which to me isn't quite as expressive as that low, menacing growl. Also, some of the production ideas sound a bit dated and fey to me. I mean, the album starts off with a violin solo that made me think of John Tesh records. (Just for a moment! ) And some other tracks ("Beautiful Queen" and "Heliotrope," for instance) have such nostalgic "psychedelic" production that their appeal is more along the kitschy lines of the Dukes Of Stratosphear than of good songwriting. I need to listen more (of course), but tracks I liked most initially included "Heliotrope" and "Beautiful Queen" (well, I DO like the Dukes Of Stratosphear), "A Happy Bird Is A Filthy Bird," "Speed Of Things," "I Am Not Me" and "You And Oblivion." I definitely like the second half better the first half. Also, I have a press kit of sorts, which includes all the lyrics, an introductory letter from Robyn himself and a shorthand history of his musical career. I'll post some of this, if people are interested. Let me know. The Robyn letter is fun, predictably. :) Incidentally, I'm open to dubbing the album for a few people if they're desperate. I'm woefully short on Robyn rarities (that is to say, I own all the in-print official Hitchcock/Soft Boys releases, but zero bootlegs), so if anyone would like to trade some unreleased RH songs or RH covers (ESPECIALLY any Dylan!!!) for the new one, drop me a line. Or does anyone have any XTC rarities/demos?? I'd say that IODOT is also in 12/8, although I'll give you that it's arguable. Furthermore, the intro to Bass is probably in 3/4 rather than 6/8 (I say this because of the tempo). I'd also argue that Exeutioner is in 12/8, while we're at it... (but then I'm in an argumentative mood this evening :-)). You can add 'It's not just the size of a walnut', BTW, for the into to each verse is certainly in triple-time. And yes, it's a bugger, becuae everyone thinks about that ole Beatles off-beat... And yes, it started with Peter Fonda, which is why the original song was called 'He Said...'. Lennon had been tripping away at Monkey Mickey Dolenz's (sp?) house, while Fonda was having a bad time on the old lysergic. 'I know what it's like to be dead', Mr. Fonda (allegedly) kept repeating. Lennon, who obviously handled the extraordinarily high-quality acid of those days rather better than some of us^X^X the people I know, actaully remembered this. Allegedly.
