I just >played Elvis >Costello's "All This Useless Beauty" and it sounds beautiful >with no >surface noise present. I wonder what the difference is. Well, I have a theory. I don't think it's the kindness of the record companies that has raised the quality of new vinyl pressings (let's just call it "Track Record" and leave it at that). Best guess is the simple fact that they aren't in such a rush to press off a ton of them like they were in the REAL days of vinyl. Most vinyl today is pressed in limited editions, thus a days work of say 5,000 copies as a whole run is not the (no pun intended) pressing issue of say 30,000 copies. So imagine, say, the rush job on a BIG record like "Born In The USA" or anything that was a first day smash. The record companies, on a dead line to get the sucker out, would give a production order and say they needed 30,000 copies ready by next week. The plant manager, wanting to keep his/her job, tells the folks on the line, "crank those presses up, and cut the "Molding" time from 5 seconds to 4 1/2 seconds, folks, we got some BOSS to deliver fer crissakes!" See my point? More importantly, was it worth making?! My liking for both of these albums may indeed stem from the fact that they were the first Robyn Hitchock albums I bought. First ones I could lay my hands on, actually, along with "Globe Of Frogs". Perspex is like a non-album to me. It's just a blip that produced a better CD single than album (the CD single for "So You Think You're In Love" is great), which is really too bad. Go >Jarvis Go! Take a baseball bat with you next time and whack his >Sequinedness a good one just for me! Actually yes - I do know a fare deal about this. It amused me plenty at the time and I made a point or reading all the press copy and watching the interviews on telly. As I'm sure you all know Jarvis is the lead singer of Pulp. They were at the Brits awards in London (Kinda like the MTV awards but everybody has to ware smart gear) to Play their current song "Sorted for E's and Whiz" I don't think they were actually up for an award but were just their to entertain. Michael Jackson was there to pickup some kind of life time achievement award, cant remember what it was actually for. But before this they ran a short video piece with clips from his whole life. The child entertainer, becomes the teenager, becomes the man, goes mad, kinda thing. And then the lights dimmed and Michael does his "earth child" routine. I don't know if you've seen it, but they have this huge LCD earth screen, where they play a video or something while there is loads of smoke and Michael throws himself round the stage. At one point Michael is up on some kinda retractable cage (The things workman use to trim trees or replace light bulbs in street lights) After all this there is a quite bit (Don't know if its a Middle Eight or not) and all these children (Well dodgey considering the press this guy has had) came down these steps, they are all dressed as street urchins or little Chinese kids, etc. They all cling to Michael, then all these religious leaders turn up, The Pope, a Jewish Rabbi, A Bishop or two. Michael then forms himself into a crucifix pose and they pull of his outfit to reveal a white sheet wrapped around him, the lights shine on him and he for all intents and purposes looks like Jesus Christ, crucified. At this point Jarvis turns up stage left and starts strutting around (kinda like a Monty Python silly walk) He has his hands on his arse and keeps flapping them and strutting like a little bird. Michael's security guards run on stage to grab him. However Jarvis is pretty nimble and manages to evade the first guards lunge. Unfortunately as this guard is falling over he appears to thump one of the little kids on stage with Michael. One of the dancers (dressed as a leper) and the second security guard manage to wrestle him of stage. The Brits is recorded live, then edited and goes out the night after. None of this was shown on the TV at the time. However of course the UK press were at the actual event and in the morning before the Brits had been shown on TV, everybody was talking about the Jarvis incident. Eventually one of the news shows, I think it was the BBC (not suprising considering it was there cameras that filmed the event) showed the clips I describe on the news. Many stills from this film made it into the news papers. Jarvis seemed to disappear after the event. Apparently he had been arrested and was being held at a local police station. At the party after the Brits many musicians formed a free Jarvis campaign and were saying that they agreed with his actions, and that Michael Jackson was well over the top, basically saying he was the son of god. Jarvis appeared in a live interview on Chris Evans TV Show called TFI Friday and explained what had happened. (Now I am paraphrasing hear because my memory ain't that good) Jarvis said that they had finished their song on stage and had gone and sat at their table (remember this is a sit down dinner event) and had started to drink quite heavily! When Michael had come on stage and started his routine, they (the whole band) had been giggling a lot at it. especially the bit with Michael up on the extendible platform. Somebody had mentioned that they hoped he would fall off, and they had all laughed. When all the children, lepers and religious leaders started to turn up on stage Jarvis started to get angry. He sad to the rest of the band, How pompous he thought this all was, and just because Michael made so much money for the record companies he was allowed to indulge his fantasies in public and nobody would ever say anything was wrong. At this point the female keyboard player of the group, Candida Doyle, said that if he felt so strongly about it maybe he should do something. Again they all laughed. Jarvis said that maybe he would and then, she DARED him to go up on stage. At this point our Jarvis full of beery confidence and a conviction that he was speaking out for the world (in fact maybe on a mission from God) got up and headed towards the stage. He said it was quite easy, he walked through the tables an approached the stage. He was expecting to get stopped, but with a few nibble jumps he was on the stage and nobody had seen him. Suddenly everybody turned round and looked at him, and he realised he didn't have a clue what he was going to say or do. Michael's P.A. was at full blast and he didn't have a microphone so he wasn't going to say anything. He noticed the security guards in the wings starting to move onto the stage. At this point he had to make his move. He started to strut around and flap his hands as described above. After he had been wrestled off stage the security guards (Michael's) took him to a room and started to discuss what they were going to do with him. It was apparent that they didn't know who he was. When the police turned up there was some confusion about a child that had been thumped, and the security guards obviously dais that it was Jarvis who had invaded the stage and caused all the trouble. The police decided to take Jarvis down to the nick to make a statement. At this point the story gets even more bizarre. I don't know if you are all familiar with a UK comedy partnership called Reeves and Mortimer (slap stick / pub club humour) they have had their own TV series over here. Anyway Bob Mortimer who had also been drinking heavily pushed his way into the room and claimed to be Jarvis's lawyer. Apparently before he was famous bob had worked for some council as some legal department as a clerk or something. Bob offered his legal services to Jarvis and they all went down to the police station. When they got their they were confronted with Michael Jackson's four professional American lawyers, who apparently fly everywhere with him. Bob who was starting to sober up apparently went white, made his excuses and left. The Lawyers started to discuss what they could actually charge Jarvis with. Apparently all he had really done was upset Michael, and that is not considered a crime. Well not here in the UK anyway. Jarvis made his statement and was then released. The rest is history. However Jarvis is taking the whole matter very seriously. Apparently on his current American tour, he is wareing a bullet proof vest. He is convinced that some mad Michael Jackson fan is going to try and shoot him! Sorry about the lack of Robyn Content but you did ask, and once I start... Check out their latest Album "Different Class" - fantastic, I think lyrically Jarvis is similar (not the same) to Robyn. Cheers, Nigel Jarman PS Being new to the list I didn't realise the worst Robyn songs had already been discussed. Sorry if I upset anybody by starting this thread again. Thought I'd throw in a note about bridges/middle eights: As several people have noted, the bridge is a musical variation on the verses. Good songwriters (either through training or instinct) also use the bridge as a lyrical variation on the songs. A great example is the song YESTERDAY, where the verses are sad and slow (e.g., "Suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be...") and the bridge is more of a plaintive cry ("Why she had to go I don't know she wouldn't say..."). Taken together the change in lyrics and music in the bridge radically changes the mood and energizes the entire song. As others have mentioned, RH uses bridges quite a bit... Subject: librarians and fegs: of one mind fegfolks - after a late start, Bayard and i made the trek up from dc to philly to attend Kay's gathering and see Mark Allen's band One Mind play at a wonderful little tavern called the Mermaid Inn. we arrived unfortunately as the party was more-or-less breaking up, a shame as we didn't get that much of a chance to meet and talk with what certainly seemed like a swell bunch o folks. however we did get to hear both sets by One Mind, which included a splendidly eclectic bunch o covers, including 'chinese bones' mile davis' "kind of blue," x's "see how we are" and an indigo girls tune among others, as well as a bunch of generally strong originals, some of the most tuneful of which were penned by feglister Mark Allen. One Mind had an interesting sonic palette as well -- the two acoustic guitars and the singers dominated the sound, ably supported by a tom-tom player and an electric bassist, with flute, claves, tin-whistle and cello all making appearances at various times. they were quite good. doug n.p. fugazi _red medicine_ p.s. to Kay -- Jenny left a ring at the bar. we left it on the windowsill on your porch, in the left corner as you face the front of the house, behind the two small roundish heavy things which we could not identify due in part to the extreme darkness. ------------------------------ From: RxBroome@aol.com Date: Sat, 22 Jun 1996 18:17:55 -0400 Subject: More middle 8's Here's something, a question about it, and my own damned opinion: "> I would to like to combine these two subjects and nominate "The Yip Song" > for worst middle eight. It's not very good in and of itself; and it > doesn't help the song at all, quite the contrary in fact. How about you clarify where the middle 8 you mean begins and ends? the bit from "Coma high.." to "believe in making it easy" is what the song is all about..I mean that IS the meaning... The bit after that of Rob and the gang humming "Easy" to each other and the yip vamp is rather pointless, though" Well, it's another 2-bridger for Robyn-- and oddly structured even for him. "Coma high" is a variation on what would probably be considered the verse, but it suddenly turns into a bridge with "I believe in surgery"-- which part is brilliant, ace, all that and a bag of chips, etc-- before turning into a SECOND distinct bridge with the "easy easy easy" bit. This whole structure thing seems simple enough, but the further you look into it, the further things stick out-- skip a few tracks on "Respect" and have a go at "Wreck of the Arthur Lee", if ya think ya hard enough. Do any of the rest of you songwriters out there have lyric sheets with such esoteric headings as "Bridge-like thing:" or "Pre-Chorus:" or "Other Part:" ? Robyn's best middle 8? "Chinese Bones"!!! For our minutes it's a beautiful, floating 2-chord vamp with meandering yet thematically cohesive lyrics, then SUDDENLY the chords start to move, a simple, aching sentiment is expressed, tying the whole thing together, and then... well, the song's pretty much over, except that the chord voicing is subtly altered when it fades back in. Anyway, their cutout CD bin has 4 or 5 copies of Alvin lives in Leeds--at $5.98! cool. If any of you need this for your collections, let me know. Alvin Lives In Leeds sports the "Kung Fu Fighting" track, as well as a nifty Lush cover song. These CDs must be making the rounds now. I found my copy at Circuit City in El Paso, TX about a month ago--for $4.99. So check the cutout bins at your local record store. They are bound to be around. And while you are looking, if you happen to find a CD by Ingrid Chavez, please buy it for me! BILLY BRAGG- No Pop, No Style: Strictly Roots. This is a live concert of Billy Bragg and the Red Stars at the Phoenix Festival in England, 1993. This is an official release, available through Billy's merchandising address, or from your favorite specialty shop. Be warned, however--many mail order stores are selling this for $20 or more, when it is available from the fan club for about $15. Anyway, this is supposedly the last concert ever with the Red Stars. I guess they gave up waiting for him to do another tour after the last album. It features a new song "MBH". About 65 min long. 2. DAVID J- Songs From Another World. David J is a member of Love and Rockets. Now Love and Rockets and Robyn probably have nothing in common (except for comics), but this solo acoustic outing is David J's "EYE" record in my humble opinion. This is an old record (1990??) and I should've mentioned it sooner, but I'm always forgetting. I dragged it out again this week, thought "hey, this is David J's EYE!" and finally remembered to tell you about it. Caution: David's songwriting style is quite different than Robyn's, and between me and you, Robyn is a much better guitar player. But hey, David J has a pretty cool voice, and the songs on this record are much more of a personal nature than some of his other solo records. Not sure if it is still in print or not, I haven't really had the need to look.... These have both been on my walkman this week, and were "mmmmm good." -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= "you're so boring boring boring / always tape machine recording you're so boring boring boring / and you've heard all this before" -Dead Kennedys john b. jones jojones@syr.edu http://web.syr.edu/~jojones -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Jun 1996 10:23:59 -0500 From: Miles Goosens Subject: Re: Recommendations fegmaniax@clairseach.ecto.org At 12:59 AM 6/23/96 -0500, John, Jacci, & Madison wrote: >2.
