If you must, ignore the rest of the song... but listen to the bass! Not to be confused with the song "Bass" which has one of the most amazing knife parts anywhere. Anyway, there is a difference between "worst" songs and the original premise "which ones might scare off potential fans"? Into the first category, I'd put things like "Superman", which just doesn't do anything for me. Into the second, I'd put things like "Ted, Woody and Junior", because its lyrical content might not appeal to everyone. James James Dignan, Department of Psychology, University of Otago. Very low. > > But where does the demand come from? Right: Popularity isn't really a determinant in pricing of rarities, once things reach a certain level. Two of the most valuable records in the world are by Bobby Charles and Dodo Resurrection. The three main things driving the prices of mega-rarities upwards are: 1) Confidence from dealers that the price will remain stable. Most of these things aren't bought and sold by fans, but used as a medium of exchange by dealers. 2) Number of bootlegs on the market. A rare album by a popular band can be worth _less_, not more, that an equally rare one by a nobody, as the market for, say, rare Beatles stuff has been flooded by bootleg copies. 3) Value to bootleggers. Mint quality albums are sometimes desperately sought by bootleggers who are willing to pay silly money; a band or their management will sometimes pay even sillier money to keep things off the market. Mick Jagger recently paid L20,000 for a tape of Stones rarities. When it comes to Greasy Quiff, the high price means that that is what the last recorded copy to be sold sold for. It doesn't mean that if you took it to your local shop you'd get that much for it; with things that obscure, 50% is the usual mark-down. N.B. The list price for the Jokers Wild album is L650 - so it's keeping pace... As to why an early RH crap record should cost more than an early crap David Gilmour record, the inference is that RH collectors are KEEN COMPLETISTS (see postings for last 3 mths, 6 mths, 2 years...). Although there are more Floyd fans out there than RH fans, most of them are happy with 4-5 Floyd albums and aren't really in the same "collectors" type market. - Mike G. It is really a great CD--it is >VOLUME 2 by the way) FYI, it turns out that the Mtn Stage CD cut off the first verse/attempt of AOL. Robyn gets through the first verse, then stops, saying he's doing it in the wrong key. He then starts over again (without hardly missing a beat). That's why on the CD the song just starts with no audience noise before the first chord. Also, IMO (though some other long time feg's who have not spoken in eons disagree), AOL on Live Death is the nicest version. Slightly different lyrics than Mtn Stage, but I like the music itself better. >Globe of Frogs, I think, has Robyn's best and worst at A&M. (best: Globe >of Frogs, Flesh #1, Balloon Man. Robyn's opinions of songs must change over time. He doesn't seem to be playing Surfer Ghost recently. Too painful? Not a good song? A good question to ask him. I also find it really amusing that 'Alright Yeah' is included on the new album. When asked during the PI days why that song was delegated to a B-side, he answered something like "because it's only alright". I also think that the live versions he's been doing of it in the last year are pretty flat without the harmonies of Morris and Andy.
