Katrina & the Waves get mentioned somewhere RE: fom Robyn ------------------------------ From: RxBroome@aol.com Date: Tue, 11 Jun 1996 00:06:56 -0400 Subject: Top 5: the Belated Ground Rules Wow! Thanks to everyone who's sent me Top 5 lists-- I'm dutifully logging them all in. Now that I know you're all taking me seriously, I should belatedly explain the ground rules to my Top 5 Compiling process. If this changes your vote, I'll gladly accept revised lists!!! 1) PLEASE send your lists only to my PRIVATE address-- lists published one the Feglist might unduly influence others. (If you've already posted yours to the list, that's cool... it's not as if I explained this at the outset. Plus, I named thre of my faves... call me an egregious hypocrite.) 2) Everyone's been allotted 15 points of votes. If you've sequenced your list, your #1 choice gets 5 points, #2 gets 4 points, etc., down to #5 with 1 point. If you specify "in no particular order", every song you list receives an even 3 points-- the mathematical simplicity of this being one of the reasons I hew to Top 5 lists, as opposed to some other, more difficult number. 3) Some of you are specifying "B-side version" or "version on such- and- such bootleg". I'm simplifying this to a vote for the COMPOSITION in question. This may sound like heresy, but there's a method to my madness: I think we all believe in the intrinsic quality of Robyn's SONGS. Therefore, when there are multiple versions, we all have the freedom to choose which interpretation best gets the song across, or touches us most deeply, or whatever. Still, if the song itself sucks, no amount of production can save it, nor can the most impassioned lo-fi live delivery. If the song is GREAT, then that greatness can never be buried, either by over- production or by tape hiss. Therefore I opt to consider songs over "tracks" (an insidious term, anyway). Nonetheless, when I post the results I will endevour to mention where specific versions helped a song's placement. 4) My original idea was to select the most "quintessential" (read: most representative) RH songs, not necessarily the "best" or "favorite" ones... but what the hell, I give up on that, since for an artist like Robyn and for fans like us, the distinction is awfully hard to make. Do as you will, Fegs. Ooohhh, this is too much fun! Okay, here are my final questions: A) How nuch longer should the voting remain open-- bearing in mind that there are people who probably only check the list once a week or so? B) I plan to post the results in their entirety, but perhaps some among you will wish to check my math. Should I also post a condensed version of all the Top 5 lists, attributed to the respective voters? Basically, this is a "freedom of information" clause-- do you mind your top-5's being disclosed to the list at large, after all is said and done? (I'll certainly disclose mine upon request.) Maybe the overall compilation of Top 5's would, in the majority opinion, take up too much list space, in which case you could privately request it from me. What d'y'all think? The polls remain open. Rex, most of whose comps do indeed include "Hate My Way", usually sandwiched between Husker Du's "I Apologize" and Johnny Cash's "Get Rhythm". ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jun 1996 21:09:19 -0700 From: gondola@deltanet.com (E.B.) From my experience with RA, I expected difficulty even getting a feed on Saturday night, when the internet can really crawl. It was great to be able to understand the Q&A although I must admit Robyn's guitar was badly muted. Though my RA feed sounded bad, it sounds like yours was worse. You can tell if your ISP is to blame by checking "Statistics" in the RA box during the feed and seeing how much data is being lost. I was consistently losing about 2% the whole broadcast, which is pretty good. For those in Canada, is this an FM or AM station and is it always this good. I heard that Frank Black is on a live concert next week so I'll definitely keep the bookmark. Anyone know who this was and whether it was finished. I've recently gained access to scanners and all the stuff needed to do this and wouldn't mind either doing a RH theme from the ground-up, finishing one someone else started and hasn't had time to finish, or contributing some needed pieces to the Feg who started this worthy project. For those who haven't been totally entrapped by Microsoft's newest operating system, themes are bundled multimedia events, pictures and sounds that make the Windows 95 desktop display take on a thematic look and feel. For example, a RH theme could have song and interview sound clips play when things like system errors happen (I would assign a sound I want to hear frequently for this). A Balloon Man graphic could replace the My Computer icon and so-on. I don't know how to do screen-savers, but they can be included as well. I'm sure the number of Fegs who could benefit is not enormous since you have to have Windows 95 and the Plus Pack in order before they work, but free themes are immensely popular in the shareware downloading world and could put a full screen picture of Robyn holding those radishes on who-knows-how-many computer screens around the world. I'll wait to hear from he/she who thought of it first before I forge ahead. Heck, if there's a Bon Jovi theme listed on the download sites, there really should be a Robyn theme to add some cyber-balance and give Robyn a little extra (very little, most likely) promotion. I am right this minute in the process of sending Bayard a list of rarities that I had written down for possible inclusion on a second UC tape. I was planning on making a second one, but I wanted to wait until Moss Elixir came out in order to figure out what recent songs could be used for the compilation. Bayard has expressed interest in making a second volume as well. With all these people excited about making a second compilation (hey--what else are summers for?), I think what I will do instead of make a second volume is recompile Uncarved Pumpkins. 3 of the songs on Uncarved Pumpkins have since come out on You & Oblivion. and Bright Fresh Flower will soon be released on A&M's reissue. I also have come across cleaner, fresher copies of songs found on Uncarved Pumpkins (Donna Summer, Went to see the Gypsy from 17 Jul 87 and More Chinese Boys and Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands from 24 Apr 89). I plan on replacing the outdated songs with 2 that I really wanted to include on the Original Uncarved Pumpkins but had no room: Someday, Someway & Consider Her Ways. (some of you in fact DID get these on your tape if you sent me a C-115). If there is still extra room, I will tack on a non-rare song: most likely a rare performance (has anyone heard 7 JUL 90 version of "Devil's Coachman"? he detunes his guitar and alternates between guitar and piano for it!!! ). I will of course make this new version of UC available to anyone that wants it. If people who already have UC want to get this newer version (and of course obtain the new rarities compilations as well) then maybe we should set up some tape trees. That's what summers are for! Tape trees and making new comps. :) My list of other rarities still out there: Unpleasant Stain Vomiting Cross Knight & The Child (Knight on the Road)? (cover) Bog Down in the Valley (cover) Queers for Jesus (i think this is an improv) Don't Maim the Children (improv---making fun of Neil Young) Meat Home (rarity? this has been treed before, but it is an improv.) Football for the Coach (i swear i've heard a complete version of this Bayard. On 27 Apr 89 soundboard maybe?) Ten Fingers (Golden Gate Park) Songs from Lovelines KROG --there's 3--all improvs Songs from Apr 93 KUSF--improvs: KUSF theme and sadly not my dead relations Visions of Johanna (lots of copies exist of this) Fortunate Son (from one of the 94 Italy shows) Born In Time (again, this has been treed before) Braindead De Chirico St (early version---94 Sweden) I Dreamed I Saw St Augustine (dylan cover) Sitting on top of the world (93 egyptians) Wind Cries Mary (lots of this) If you're going to San Francisco (cover 89 Revolver Records, SF, CA) BEatle Train with Antlers (94 toronto) Weasel Turned his back on NYC. That's all I can come up with, I'm sure there are more out there. MIchael, there are some GREAT improvs and such on your video comps--it would be great to see those on audio. AT least, until they come up with VCR Walkmans :). On another note, many people have talked before about compiling monologues from shows to make a spoken word tape (didn't they make an album like this of Elvis Presley banter once?) How about seeing one of these? I don't know if I could listen to 90min tape of this--at least not at one sitting.
