Hi Susan I only know two things about theremins: 1) I once saw Roger Ruskin Spear of the Bonzo Dog Band play a solo on a theremin which was disguised as a leg. I think that there is a number called 'Music for the Leg' or some such on one of their albums (could be "Keynsham"). 2) 'Electricity' by Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band also features some wild theremin playing. Fabulous track! I recently saw a review of some new band who have rediscovered it. I think Robyn would only use it if he went back to being in a psychedelic band ... - Mike Godwin "The traffic lights they turn blue tomorrow" - JMH ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Jun 1996 09:27:13 -0700 From: Rob Zarzecki Subject: Nasty-Capt Sensible >From: Bad Vibe Merchant <101356.2516@CompuServe.COM> >Subject: Assorted bits >b) Although The Damned did a music spot on _The Young Ones_ ('Nasty' - and most >of it had dialogue over it) - but the Captain didn't play that time. I have it on video and it is the 5 man lineup of The Damned. Rob Z -------------Yes we have a video! ________Footos~The Fresh Fighter ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ------------------------------ From: LJ Subject: MROBYN SPEAKS TO ME IN A DREAM Date: Mon, 3 Jun 1996 12:48:04 -0400 (EDT) I know it must sound crackpot, but I do think that there is more to this than it seems. So here goes-- I had the MOST unusual and wonderful dream this morning: RH is on tour with his manager and fellow guitar player, Mark Knopfler (the guy from Dire Straits, even though I don't know what he looks like). They're driving around in a big black Cadillac, and they put on the shows in a big black tent that they pitch on the site-- in this case, it's in front of my parents' house. I'm at the show, and everyone is dancing like crazy (which seems wierd for a RH show), and there is a "smoking room" in back where everyone smokes pot but you're not allowed to dance. So I'm at the first set, and it's great. In between sets I have to go to the bathroom and I ask Mark Knopfler if it's okay if I use the toilet in their car-- amazingly, he says yes and he's really cool about it. The car has a toilet in the driver side seat. While I'm peeing, I look over at Robyn's clip-on dashboard notepad. It has various little errand notes and stuff written all over it-- one says "pick up Tina" (???), but in the middle of it in kind of small letters, it says "HI". After a brief time I come out and everyone is back in the tent getting ready for the second set. Robyn and Mark Knopfler are sitting outside of the tent, working on a song. MK says to me, "he won't play it for an audience unless he gets it perfectly right." The song is this INCREDIBLE psychedelic groove, it was so wonderful. And then the phone rang!!!! Who calls someone at 8:30 AM?!?!?! So I woke up with this music in my head... I tried to go back to sleep and get the dream back, but the best I could do was a dream where I was running through the forest with a whole bunch of little girls, and there were these huge roses (bigger than your head) lying all over the ground. Then I'm walking down the street, and I run into Robyn. I walk up to him and say, "Hi, I'm a big fan- it's an honor to meet you." He says hi and just looks kind of shy and embarassed. (I've met him before actually, and that really is how he acts in person.) Maybe this DOES sound really crackpot, but I don't care. I think that this man carries some kind of mystical weight. This is not the first dream I have had about him, and I'm sure it won't be the last. And they're always the same-- kind of mysterious, but always full of wonderful music that I've never heard before. And I KNOW, I KNOW I sound like a flake, but I do think that "hi" on the notepad was intended for me. Well it WAS my dream from my brain, so of course it was intended for me, but still...it makes you wonder... Yes I am cracked!!! :) LJ ------------------------------ From: s618621@aix2.uottawa.ca Date: Mon, 3 Jun 1996 13:15:15 -0400 (EDT) Subject: we'll have a real good time together Greetings, Just letting you know that I will likely be recording RH's appearance on Realtime this weekend. The Pixies used a theremin on "Velouria," as I recall, played by a guy named Robert Brunner. If I remember correctly the theremin is some sort of electrostatic device over which you wave a magnetized wand of some sort, the proximity of which alters the frequency emitted by the device. But I'm not a physicist so I may be totally wrong about all that. If you've ever seen the movie "Forbidden Planet," practically the whole soundtrack is done with one. --John H. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Jun 1996 06:07:10 -0500 From: kenster@MIT.EDU (Ken Ostrander) Subject: Re: Succour >Fegs, > >I went to the local used CD store and found, to my astonishment, that >"Succour" was already in the used bin for $23.00.
