Just wanted to respond to the person who commented that "Terry is not Robyn. Terry is Syd". This is not true. To quote the Television Personalities, "I know where Syd Barrett lives" (with his new wife and baby in a small town in Maine) and even dated him briefly. You see, this fellow was obsessed with the idea that he was Syd and even at one point began to believe it, I think. He was a nutty drug-casualty, constantly in and out of mental institutions and on all sorts of strange drugs (everything but roller skates, in fact) prescribed by somewhat shady mental health "professionals". It was often hard to know, though, which of his mad ramblings and weird behaviors had to do with this or with his efforts to be more Syd-like, because this was often the case. Mad north by northwest, to quote the bard. Anyway, what did not help in this whole business was the fact that he was THE SPITTING IMAGE of Syd circa "Piper", and that only added fuel to the fire. I found this fairly charming and interesting for a week or two (he could be charming and wonderfully witty when he wanted to be, and was a very talented musician to boot)- well, actually more like three weeks or so, I'd say- but even a woman with a rescuer/mother complex as deeply ingrained as mine isn't really equipped to handle this sort of situation. I'm pretty patient, but the erratic behavior, inability to have a conversation about anything other than Syd or Frank Zappa, and passionate self-obsessions of this person began to wear on me pretty quickly, not to mention the drain such a troubled and damaged psyche can be on someone who is not trained to deal with it and has ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 May 96 22:24:43 CDT From: Truman Peyote Subject: (post about the real Syd continued.....and some RH stuff too :)) Ach! I got cut off while writing that and didn't feel like retyping the whole damn thing! Anyway, to wrap it up.........:) .......not to mention the drain such a troubled and damaged psyche can be on someone who is not trained to deal with it and is not the emotionally healthiest person around, either. He raged at me when I broke up with him and continued to do so each time I had the misfortune to run into him anywhere; but not very long afterwards he met a woman who understood him (she was a little crazy too), and they moved to Maine and got married and had a child together. I guess there are two points to this long story- Point one: mental illness isn't romantic and this experience made me wary of those who would romanticize someone like Syd, and also a lot more appreciative of the struggle faced by those who cared about him and the suffering behind his work (because I was aggravated by Syd wannabe, there's no denying, but I was also fond of him and watching his very real and deep suffering took a toll on me). Point Two: There really is someone for everyone, and he is much much happier with his present consort (and she with him) than he could have been with me. And finally, that Terry isn't Syd! :) RH content- Mucky! Mucky! Mucky the pig! You could be a feg if........it really bothers you that people keep insisting that it's Lucky, or worse, Bucky (reminds me of that monty python sketch with the "bulor supplement". Also the listings for those Bingo Hand Job bootlegs- is the "Hello In There" an REM song or is it (please, pretty please) the John Prine song of the same title? And to close out- would the person who has the tape of Robyn on "Lovelines" please contact me? I seem to have become addicted to the blasted show and am dying to hear it! :). I should clarify that it was RH, not TM, who yelled at me about spelling mistakes (I'm picky about spelling too) and it was Terry's _glass flesh_ entries that made me wonder if syd himself wanted to pay tribute to robyn.. only for a moment, but it's an interesting idea (though i hear SB only listens to jazz now and never touches musical instruments, not even mellowtrongs.) But who will be next to carry the torch after Robyn gets tired of doing music, if ever? I'm glad to hear that Roger Keith is better now, unlike Roky Erickson, who is from what I hear still a few bricks shy of a load. So could someone tell me again (I get so much mail in the course of a day that I delete almost everything, which is why I don't have this anymore) when this "Shadowcat", "Ant Man Bee" (Ant and Bee reference?) or whatever it is this week is actually going to be available to the consumer. I keep thinking it's the end of this month, for some reason. And more importantly, to me at least, who all is a-playin' on it; I seem to remember reading that it was going to be mostly acoustic, which I would love. And hopefully there will be a tour, which I would also love! Of course Rh usually plays in medium-size venues (around 800-1000) when in Chicago, not small clubs (bummer!) but it would still be aces! "Younger than Yesterday" has "Lady Friend" as a bonus track. In my opinion this might be the greatest song never to have been a hit (or at least one of them)." I move that your opinion be written into law, for it is entirely correct. "Lady Friend" is also astonishingly well produced-- lightyears ahead of even the most lauded of its contemporaries. My question to ByrdManiax (BTW, is the "x" at the end of "fegmaniax" related to this album title?) is-- do the bonus tracks on the reissues go any further than the Byrds box set and "Never Before"? Furthermore, do the albums truly benefit from the sharper digital reproduction? I remember ever so clearly hearing the digital rendition of "Why?" for the first time and being alarmed at the clarity of it-- how much cleaner do we want this stuff to get? The Byrds exert an incalculable influence on Robyn. Robyn's recently quoted "Top-10 Albums" list (mentioned on the list in order to evoke "I'm Only Sleeping" from his #1 pick, "Revolver") also included the debut Byrds record-- an affinity also reinforced by Robyn's cover of the Byrds' cover of "Wild Mountain Thyme" (w/P. Buck under the monicker "Nigel & the Crosses", perhaps of interest to those Bingo Handjob afficianados interested in pseudonymous REM/Robyn aggregations). Robyn also recently told the list that he'd still like to collaborate with Jim McGuinn, and on the interview segments of "Spectre", he mentions that "Arms of Love" (I think) was originally written for McGuinn... which basically tells us that, although Robyn's Dylan when he's alone in the dark, when he thinks of himself fronting a band he's imagining being good ol' Roger covering himself just as McGuinn habitually covered Bobby D. A friend of mine lent me a cassette of a show (Stache's, Columbus, Ohio, October 21, 1990) that is wonderful. It's an audience copy, but everything (Robyn, guitar, and audience) is clear (it's the original tape that he made at the show). The only problem is that he's played this tape A LOT, so it can get a little muffled at times (you know the sound - like a phase shifter on high frequencies). Anyway, if you're interested in trading, email me privately (I can include the set list). I'm interested in other shows, interviews, etc. If you're interested in my general "bootleg" trade list, let me know and I'll include it with my response. If I'm overwhelmed with responses, I may take a while, so be patient. Keith ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 May 1996 14:36:54 -0400 From: Mike Breen Subject: Re: Terry is Syd? It was probably the black bean soup and red onion pizza for dinner, but I had a VERY strange feg-related dream last night. It seems a bunch of fegs (and their pets for some reason) were all gathered in this chapel (after lunch?) to see an animated short with music by RH. He sang a great cover of Too Much Joy's "The Kids Don't Understand" while these little animated creatures generally blew snot all over eachother. Then, there was no video on the tape, but Robyn sang "Chinese Water Python." I don't remember the lyric, but it fit the music perfectly -- something about a snake wearing one of those big, round straw hats and eating rice and vegetables. (I said it was strange.) No large oxen, laughing or otherwise. And apparently the bus from New Zealand never arrived. The strangest thing to me was that several of you -- and we've never met -- were very real. In particular, the guy running the VCR was rather short and had long, straight very red-orange hair. Something tells me it's somebody I've seen (perhaps at a gig?). Anybody fit that description?
