I HAVE!! he came to London, Ontario (where i'm from) to play a very intimate club. he did this cool acoustic set; there was no band. after the set, my friend went upstairs to pick up her Cd's that were in the band room. she told R.H. to wait and then she dragged me upstairs... well, i shook that hand and tried not to look like a hick. he was extremely polite and charming and appeared to be genuinely flattered when i asked him to sign my perspex island Cd. got pictures of his performance, too. should i scan them and send them to fegmaniax? -corny fan. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 May 1996 19:37:10 -0400 (EDT) From: Terry Marks Subject: Maisie I'm surprised that no one's asked this before. I guess this is real, but at first I thought it was yet another spin on the ongoing sub-thread about the "Rolling Stone Shut Up Fer Chrissakes It's Complete, Alright, Encyclopedia of All Things Rockish". Griffith says: "I saw a commercial on VH1 for their new series "Storyteller." It appears to be an "Unplugged" style of program, but with more interplay between performer and audience. The first installment has Ray Davies as the musician/storyteller. Doesn't this seem like a grand environment for Robyn to perform on TV? The show looks like it was design for Robyn, I'd like to see him on an installment of the program." Does VH1 play or support Robyn, though? I haven't seen VH1 for years, but my impression is that it's somewhere between Adult Contemporary and "Adult Album Alternative ("Triple-A") in its format. Robyn's definitely not the former and is supported by maybe 1/3 of the AAA stations I know of-- it's a weird format, and I wonder what would happen to Robyn if someone tried too hard to market him toward this market. Disaster, I fear-- I think this has happened in his career already, when "GD" was pushed in a trendy "New Wave" direction and also when "Queen Elvis" was pushed too close to the median of what was then called "College Rock" at a time when "College Rock" was thought to be, post-REM, the next big thing (the first abortive attempt to mainstream the alternative, leaving the cutout bins filled with overprinted records just like QE). Can anyone explain why that damned song, "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie somebody, was such a huge hit in the mid-80's? I mean, it's no surprise that a terrible song would be a hit, but that song is both terrible AND really, really bizarre! I mean, it has about seventeen different sections and it doesn't make a damned bit of sense, and after all the sub-Stevie Nicks histrionics, what's the payoff? A lame pun that we already know 'cuz it's the title. Christ. Rex ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 May 1996 15:18:30 -0400 (EDT) From: ! I know this well because a former roommate of mine used to listen to it ad nauseum, as well as Abba and the theme from "Ghostbusters". But I digress. I could not say why it was a hit; these things are beyond ordinary human understanding and even insane people have a hard time explaining why songs like "Sugar Shack" (no, younguns, not the b52s song :)) and "You're Having My Baby" became so wildly popular. I'm fascinated by the bottomless pit of uselss musical trivia one can amass. I also, in second grade, used to listen to the "Spies Like Us" theme on the library's tape recorders (until I got caught! yikes!) Much better than the Ghostbuster's theme. Although Duran Duran's theme for View To a Kill was probably my favorite. I smell a tasty Rhino Comp. in there somewhere... I never listened to the Kimberly-Rew-associated and Soft-Boys-influenced band the dB's when they were around, but just a couple months ago I found a copy of Peter Holsapple and Chris Stamey's MAVERICKS, and absolutely love it, especially the first song, "Angels." (Translation for those who haven't heard it: I found a late-80s catchy Byrds-like record and am easily manipulated by "Flesh No. 1"-style soft guitar pop.) What of the rest of the dB's output sounds most like Mavericks? I picked up "Stands for Decibels," and while I like a lot of it, the musical style is much more aggressive on that early record. Should I be listening to the later, Holsapple-dominated dB's instead? Advice from the Wise -- either e-mailed to me or posted to the list -- would make me happy and help me become a more effective consumer. - David Librik librik@cs.Berkeley.edu librik@netcom.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The End of this Fegmaniax Digest.
