"Slouching Through Liverpool"--an EP, has a great cover of Big Star's "Back of a Car" plus live versions of songs from other Loud Family and Game Theory albums. "The Tape of Only Linda"--the latest (1994), also an excellent album. The most "accessible" of the bunch, FWIW. All the Game Theory albums are really good too--Scott Miller is a wonderful, oddball songwriter/musician and he's put out a lot of great music over the years. Enjoy! I think that this is a perfectly appropriate post for a list full of people obsessed with Robyn Hitchcock. I'm sure that more than a few of us have wondered about meeting our soulmates through a Robyn Hitchcock related situation (show, fegmaniax, record store, etc.). Since he seems to inspire such passionate feelings amongst us all, I am not surprised to hear about the connection that you and Jay found. Congratulations! I can also be as sappy as I want to be!!!! Cats and dogs both do this sometimes (I had a dog who loved carrots, too). Usually it's a sign that you don't want to let them in for a few hours, because their digestive systems WILL have their revenge, usually all over your carpet. Sarah, I would never "flame" anyone for being in love (as I am myself)... in fact, I wouldn't "flame" anyone at all! But I would also defend the so-called "Green Day thread" (which wasn't REALLY about Green Day) as a chance for some of us to get our musical-prejudice ya-yas out. Sort of the bad-vibe side of one of my favorite list features, "musical recommendation time"! But yeah, not heavily relevant unless you're a general near-obsessive music-head as well as a Feg, and many of us are. Speaking of past list recommendations, I finally had a chance to check out the Lengendary Pink Dots. I had a borrowed LPD album in my CD changer with my new copy of "Barrett" and came to the hasty conclusion that the if Syd had had access to a sequencer, he would've done something awfully similar to the Dots' music-- something about the vocal style and the delivery and the general weirdness. Definitely worth further investigation. Dreams of Robyn: I think I've had some, but can't recall any. I certainly have always had Robynesque dreams rife with undulating aquatic invertebrates (family coelenterata) and crustaceans prowling the seabed. I also often dream of trains. 1 800 REAPER (Robyn and Death): yes, death and sex are inescapable, and Robyn's put them to more creative uses than can be easily summed up. And he makes death amusing, which is a great comfort to us all-- his attitude toward it is generally bemused, I would say. But as "Respect" shows, even someone whose bread is buttered by loopy meditations on death can be knocked down severely by having to deal with a personal loss-- perhaps it makes it even worse, I don't know. Thinking of Robyn's new songs, perhaps "ShadowSurfer" (or whatever it's to be called) should be issued with a gaily-colo(u)red sticker on it proclaiming "Less Death than Usual!" "Trilobite" expands the death theme to encompass extinction, thus doing the nifty trick of making it even more absurd, and "You and Oblivion" is... well, very, very death-oriented, but most of the rest of it seems very grounded in the living here-and-now. Perhaps I'm forgetting something. What do y'all think-- is Robyn emerging from his "mourning" phase? I think he is, but substantially enriched as an artist for the experience. Rex PS-- perhaps we should ask Death himself. Having had one of the best romantic moments of my life right after a Robyn Hitchcock concert, I'm glad to read that someone is having some love and happiness in their lives. It gives me some amount of hope for my romantic future. My first exposure to Robyn was utterly pleasant in so many ways... not only did I meet someone really attractive and cool to be with at the time, but it was mellow while being thoroughly upbeat. I still have golden memories of Robyn and being in love. Speaking of which... suppose, just suppose, I'm seeing this thoroughly wonderful woman who brightens my life and adds to my perspective, who I'm trying to introduce to Robyn Hitchcock. Her tastes are fairly eclectic, but probably the closest she's gotten to Robyn would be something like TMBG. What might you have in mind for that? Said woman has a vegetarian cat too. I don't think either ia among Robyn's best work, but then I'm not that wild about TMBG. I think rather than finding a tune that sounds like the band she likes, you ought to just play her something that YOU like and explain why. In other words, sometimes, even when the situation calls for a breaking ball, you gotta go after the hitter with your fastball if that's your best pitch. These were three songs that really got me into RH (although I probably don't qualify as a fegmaniac), and I think they have many of the same elements that I like about TMBG. It's sort of like teaching history. Sometimes you've gotta show how past events are relevant to the present before they start seeing that history is worthy of investigation simply for its own sake. I've never liked TMBG much myself (this is understating the case, somewhat, actually, it might be more accurate to say that I loathe them :)). If she has really eclectic tastes, there's probably something she likes that comes closer to RH anyway (Beatles, Dylan, Kinks, Beefheart, XTC, Jonathan Richman all come to mind right off), but that still doesn't refute Russ's basic point, and it's a good 'un. Just present Robyn on his own terms. You know better than any of us on this list what might be a good introduction, since you're the only one of us that knows this woman (obviously). It really does depend on the individual you're dealing with. However, my thought on this is that if the individual likes *you*, then probably the best way to present Robyn (or any such set of things that you like) is to present what *you* like. The person will hopefully see that little bit of Robyn's work that has affected you, and that might be all the linkage she needs. For example, I have a friend who was curious about Robyn, so I decided to put some on while we played rummy. Since I was absolutely HOOKED on Invisible Hitchcock that week, I used it for a test. He *loved* it, particularly "Trash" and "The Abandoned Brain". Now, he hasn't become a raving feg-a-holic or anything, but he has a distinct appreciation for our man Robyn. (As for my fiancee, she is not particularly a Robyn fan. She takes most of my music collection with the attitude of, "OK, it's way weirder than anything I'd buy, but I've got a whole lifetime to get used to it once we're under the same roof." I may never make her a Robyn/XTC/Mould/Costello/Zappa fan, but oh well -- that's not enough on which to base a marriage, though it certainly makes things run more smoothly...) Under the alias of Johnny Robyn, he joined Otis Fagg, and Kimberly Eng, and they started the band in 1974. They played live a few times, but no one really noticed. Their aborted "We Can Play Punk" Sessions were available for a brief time as an EP from Dyno Music, but that has since vanished and copies have sold for upwards of $57. Robyn has denied this, like he denies all of his career before 1979, but Eng Rew and Otis Fagg both readily admit to being part of the Fish Pistols.
