If you've ever read the Ptolemaic Terrascope, from the UK which featured the Hitchcock/Tiny Tim ep (all sold out), they are releasing a double CD benefit album with the 3:19 Robyn track "She Was Sinister But She Was Happy". The cost is 12 pounds sterling, with 3 pounds for shipping. US dollars are acceptable, the exchange rate quoted at $1.55 per pound. It also features tracks by Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey, the Bevis Frond, Endino's Earthworm, Captain Sensible, Spirit, Sundial and Nurse With Wound, 35 tracks in all. And it's quite limited. The address is PTOLEMAIC TERRASCOPE, 37 Sandridge Road Melksham, Wiltshire SN12 7BQ ENGLAND destined a classic! I posted one as I remembered it a few lists back-- it was a little suspect. I know of somemone on the list who can provide a definitive answer, as he possesses a tape of the event (Chrisssss...) Also, forgot to mention this: Terry's post about Otis Fagg and Kimberly Eng (coupled with James' mentioning of things that the entire English speaking world understands except for America) brought to mind a question that's nagged at my mind for a while: is it common for English men to be called "Kimberly"? In America, I've known male Kims, but never male Kimberly's. When Robyn sings "My baby and I, as Kimberly would say..." I can only think of a female character. When I first learned that the Soft Boys had featured someone named Kimberly Rew, I thought it was cool that Robyn had worked with a female musician early on. Little did I know. Is Kimberly's name just weird, or is this a common thing? So, the family tree goes like this: Beatles | \ RH The Clash | Green Day Actually, Green Day actually *IS* The Clash! The new songs are strong. He has played them live, in front of audiences for over two years now. They have been honed, reworked, and perfected. The material wasn't hammered out during a two week stay in a studio just to fill 40 minutes of tape. These songs have been cultivated on the road. 2. Now that he is back on a major label (Warner Bros.), I really think that they will publicize his new release. I can actually see the new material being broadcast on (dare I say it) Adult Alternative Format Radio. I'm not too sure about Alternative-styled radio. I haven't heard any RH on the local Alternative station since Nirvana hit the airwaves. 3. Hopefully the Re-Issues on Rhino have sparked some kind of interest for new RH music. I'd really like to see A&M try to cash in on RH's rise in fame, and Re-Issue those albums (like Rhino did). 4. I hope that he does not become so successful that we see him doing commercials for Pepsi, Taco Bell, or anything else. Nor do I want to see him guesting on "Friends" doing a duet of "Smelly Cat." Just my two cents worth . . . I cannot see Green day even progressing like the old new wave/punk bands Though many (including me) like the original bands more than what they later became, I cannot see Green Day or any of their ilk progressing. Maybe they don't want to. I like their stuff but it is limited. Progression chart 101 er's (R &B Strummer Combo) \ The Clash (add some reggae, dub styles) \Big Audio Dynamite The Jam \Foxton solo(ugh!) / Style Council (bigger ugh, but a progression) \Paul Weller Solo (regression?-but better than the Style Council by far IMHO) Damned- \ Capt Sensible (worked with Robyn-puts out alot of daft progressive cd's that are pretty goofy) Buzzcocks- \Pete Shelley, synth experiments \Buzzocks reformed (new CD to be produced by, ummm, Green Day's producer) What's the point of all this then? I dunno...guess I just want to say, The old bands seemed to have more "talent" than the new crop. Yes, Richard Marx does in fact have the same vocabulary as Robyn Hitchcock. He just uses it differently. For example, I'm sure the words "asking" and "tree" are in his vocabulary, he just would not come up with "the asking tree" or "feel like asking a tree for an autograph". As one of the Music/Program Directors of WEBX-FM (The Web) in Champaign, Illinois, I can say beyond a doubt there will be at least ONE AAA (Adult Album Alternative) station in the country that will play the livin' hell out of Robyn's next release ("Shadowcat" as it's known this week). For those of you who are interested, our station treats Robyn as a CORE ARTIST- that is to say the way some stations treat Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel, or R.E.M. You'll hear at least one Robyn song a day on The Web. (The one I caught today was "Sleeping With Your Devil Mask"). Now, if I may plug a little more- our station just went 24 hours a day real time audio on the internet, so you all can listen in if you like! Our web address is www.webxfm.com and all of the info on how to get real time audio is included on the site. Thanks for reading this! It was a San Francisco MUNI bus, but of course since it was a dream it wasn't really a MUNI bus....it was some strange van-thing...it was running on one of the electrical bus lines and lost its connection to the electrical wire as it made its way up the hill....it rolled back down the street and I thought disaster was going to strike...Applying my skills at dream analysis I would say that I miss San Francisco and public transportation mishaps... Tim. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Apr 96 17:21:53 CDT From: Truman Peyote Subject: green day sunshine Dearest Tim- your clever darling would like to point out to you that chords and words are only ROUGHLY analogous. there are many MANY rock and roll songwriters (fine ones too) that use only three or four chords primarily (or exclusively). it's not as though the clash INVENTED this. in fact, i would like to reiterate my own opinion that mod-era who would be who (no pun intended) green day most resembles musically. not only do they use the same few chords (yes, i know the who's music got more complex later on, but i figured out both "substitute" and "the kids are allright" after approximately 10 days of playing guitar), but pattern them in a similar way. if you aren't one of those people who vomits at the very mention of the name green day, take a listen to "insomniac" sometime and see if you don't agree with me. lots of people use few chords, it's the patterning that's distinctive. words, on the other hand, are lots easier to pick up than chords and riffs (at least for me) and require less practice, so it's amazing to me that more people can't use a larger variety of them in songs. robyn and richard marx may know a lot of the same words, but does richard marx know the word 'stymied'? can he use it in a sentence? i would venture to say not. Robyn's best chance for acceptance will come when some young band gets a number one hit--perhaps with one of his songs--and then proclaims Robyn Hitchcock to be their main influence, sparking a trend of hip young bands claimimg to be from the Robyn Hitchcock school of songwriting.
