Reading the lyrics to "September Cones" which Terry posted with his tablature brought to mind something. It's pretty common knowledge that Robyn likes Mervyn Peake's _Ghormenghast_ series. There is a line in "Cones" that talks of a boy growing horns and a tail because he "needs a love to call his own". This sounds very similar to the plot line of another of Peake's works, _Mr. Pye_, in which the title character is so holy that he begins growing angel wings. Then, to counter this terrifying experience he purposely commits evil -- and then begins to grown horns and a tail, ala Satan. Is this lyric somehow related to _Mr. Pye_? Does anyone know anything about it? Also, what other (if any) references in Robyn's canon belie themes, plots, characters and so forth from particular books? I'm curious to hear what some of you "expert" Fegs will come up with... I recently visited a friend who said, "Want to hear Robyn talk about Rush Limbaugh." He then played me an excerpt that he downloaded from somewhere, which, oldly enough, actually had me on it, saying something about Rush being shiny to Robyn. Does anyone know where I can find this sound clip? And, are there other sound clips out there of Robyn in concert or interviews or anything like that? Thanks. -Eugene ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tipper Gore said to Lou Reed, "Lou Reed, how can we communicate better with our children?" Lou Reed responded, "We would probably have to sit down and talk about it over a bottle of scotch, and maybe, some crack." It's back! It is a sound file on my computer now. The Glass Hotel is there too. (It's the name of my workstation.) (Finger me to get the address, I don't keep it in my head.) Groetjes, Susan p.s. Robyn does some funny bits of Elvis "uh huh huh"'s on the song . . . ------------------------------ From: jpartridge@accel.com Date: Fri, 29 Mar 96 11:55:31 EST Subject: Re: Mr. Pye's cones - a lit connection? I had a chance back in '86 to ask Robyn about his interest in Mervyn Peake which had struck me as a somewhat unique taste since Peake never got that popular in the States (as far as I know...). Robyn said that in fact The Gormenghast trilogy was hugely popular in England during the 70's - that in fact there were rock bands with names like "Fuschia" (Titus' sister) being formed all the time. Given that Gordie Sumner also sung (metaphorically that is) the praises of Mervyn Peake's stuff, I guess it couldn't have been too eclectic a taste. I also asked Robyn if he had read any Nabokov (I was thinking of the sad, desperate, hilarity of "Pale Fire") or Donald Barthelme (wrote a beautiful short book called "Sadness"). Ixnay on othbay. Aside from the Peake books and the Crabs books (Crab's Moon, Night of the Crabs, etc.) I don't know of any other literary influences on Robyn's stuff. He didn't mention any, at any rate. In short, here's the Hitchcock/Peake connection as far as I can tell: 1. Both have a 'y' in their given names. 2. Both paint. 3. Both bring a very rich, dense, visual imagination to their written work. Some of Peake's poems are awesome, by the way. Many suck, but a few are Grade A. Also by the way, Mervyn wrote a short story about the Titus character encountering evil incarnate which really rocked - the story rocked, not the evil. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Mar 1996 17:15:26 -0500 (EST) From: Terry Marks Subject: Re: Mr. Pye's cones - a lit connection? > > Aside from the Peake books and the Crabs books (Crab's Moon, Night of > the Crabs, etc.) I don't know of any other literary influences on > Robyn's stuff.
