Humorous bits: Some guy to the right of us set his lighter on high and held it aloft for all of Wind Cried Mary...at one point he staggered to the stage and handed RH a napkin to the response "I dont remeber it...I wrote it though" My friend Heather tried to throw herself at Robyn after the show, only to annoy him because he wanted to hit the road back to Austin, so she had to badger him for an autograph, which he only gave his initials, then she bitched the all the way home about how she'd slept with more famous people than him...oh the evils of gin..... jay ------------------------------------- Jay Lyall Livermore Software Laboratories, Intl. I found this comparison to be rather frightening and was wondering what other fegs thought of it. The only connection I could really find is they're both English and can be rather witty in some of their songs. What are other people's reactions to this comparison? Sarah AKA The Goddess ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Mar 1996 13:28:35 -0500 (EST) From: Bayard Subject: Re: Robyn...the Happy Morrissey RH isn't all that happy. How many happy songs can you think of? I can only think of a couple offhand... beautiful girl, flesh#1, maybe satellite.. they're not really his best, either, though they're not bad at all. All the rest of the songs are bittersweet at best, (the love songs anyway). If you have it, listen to Dave Brown's "one long pair of eyes" on the glass flesh tapes. it sounds even more like morrissey than terry's stuff sounds like syd barrett. Robyn's cover of "Every Day is Like Sunday" is pretty good. Don't know that I've ever hear the original, though. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Mar 1996 13:46:02 -0500 (EST) From: Bayard Subject: ISO rare live trax hello all, i'm still working on this collection of odd bits. side one will be the best robyn live monologues from gigs, side 2 will consist of one-offs he's made up on the spot or almost never played live. any assistance in finding/choosing great stories and songs in your tape collections is much appreciated. to avoid duplication, here is a tracklisting from the wondrous _uncarved pumpkins_ compilation, as collected by "Crackity" Jones: evil guy/lobsterman/dominoes/september cones/you've got/yes i do/the speed of things/gigolo aunt/mr rock n roll/it's a man's life/the garden of light/love is what/sad eyed lady/the ruling class/bright fresh flower/strawberry fields/charlotte anne/digital spaceship/video cleaning service/more chinese boys/donna summer/dysentery fix/forthcoming attractions/ the same box all along/big eyed beans from venus/space oddessy/birdshead/the librarian/[i went to see] the gypsy/man on the moon/nightfall we can consider the above safely archived and immortal (i should hope most who want it have a copy of the '87 mccabes gig anyway. if only it were better quality, alas.. well, then it probably would have been made into a bootleg cd , ripping off RH in the process. ah well.) here are the tracks I've dug up for this next compilation: (please let me know of any i've missed, or if there exist better versions) from KUSF 28apr93: rabbit train mystery train kung fu fighting brain death eight miles high my dead relations from the kennel club, SF, 5/91 mr rock 'n roll (the _definitive_ version! :) the vomiting cross the leopard the bones in the ground the three kings, 1jul95 surfer ghost (or perhaps the FM rendition, though the dj talks over the end) maxwells 22sept89 consider me gone love mccabes 23sept95 (late) shadowcat shuffling over the flagstones ronnie scott's, london 85 dwarfbeat the unpleasant stain NY, 2oct90 chain mary to the bed 9:30 club 27dec95 desolation row freeze (solo electric) maxwells (90?) dark globe the yellow snake the main thing WHFS 12-90 snow strike WHFS 7jan96 satellite of love (l. reed) weasel turned his back on NYC mccabes 27apr89 filthy bird (unk. title) crocodile cafe, oct 94 (?)odds 'n ends (title?) queen of eyes (w/the young fresh fellows) football for the coach (incomplete, is there a complete rendition)? georgetown u, 17may93 the mousaka song mccabes 87 the gypsy (unless the same as on _UP_) the knight & the child (ditto) _________________________________________________ this is mostly from memory and may well be somewhat innacurate, in fact it almost definitely is. other possibilities: beautiful queen, the hots, devils radio, sinister. personally, i feel dechirico, trilobite etc. cannot be considered rare tracks, even though they are thus far unreleased (he's played them sooo much recently.) other exceptionally non-rare live tracks: devil's coachman (ugh), i got a message for you, (aaaaahhhhhhhhhg!) autumn is your last chance. (ahh. nice song.) if you have any suggestions, please email me. tentative title is "skeletons from the vault", in keeping with john's halloween theme and RH's tendency to record tons of b sides and outtakes and not release them. the best stories i've heard are on the SUNY tape from 10-2-90, if you'd like to nominate other live stories, please let me know. i'll tape tree it if there is interest. bayard ------------------------------ From: LORDK@FLP.LIB.PA.US Date: Fri, 22 Mar 1996 14:30:56 -0500 (EST) CC: LORDK@FLP.LIB.PA.US Subject: Tell me about youre drugs I would love to see a biographical time line done for any contemporary word-smith(whether sung or written), tracing exactlly what chemicals were being ingested (perscription and non) while which works were created. In terms of Robyn--hes bever done another albumn quite as dark as IODOT. Is that because of recent improvements in anti-deppressents? Or other forms of medication? I dont know, but I wouildnt be suprised if at some points he might have taken/take perscribed psychotropic substances. Anyone know the true gen? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Mar 1996 15:13:26 -0500 (EST) From: ! What are other people's reactions to this comparison? > > Sarah > AKA The Goddess i suppose, if you really want to stretch it, that they might share some of the same influences, but on the whole, i think this comparison is ludicrous! i don't even think robyn is all that 'happy' on the whole...some of his songs are, but what about the likes of 'goodnight i say' or 'linctus house' or 'raymond chandler evening' or 'i watch the cars' or a whole lot of other stuff? and occasionally morrissey gets downright giddy -- what about 'ask' or 'everyday is like sunday?' happy tunes, they, n'est-ce pas? given that we're in friend-of-a-friend territory, i wonder if it's possible that one or the other of the names was somehow garbled. sounds like a lame essay question, pa, over! over! Robyn is like Morris on Prozac (tm). Discuss. Nona Hendryx is the Happy Morrissey (tm). Compare and Contrast: Robin Holcomb, Stephen Patrick Morrissey. Be sure to include a discussion of their relative emotional states and estimated type and quantity of drug ingestion. Justify your statements with examples from the text. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Mar 96 18:22:35 CST From: Truman Peyote Hehe.......the happy Morrissey. That be a real knee-slapper in my opinion. As though every song Robyn writesis like "Mellow Together" or something. As though Morrissey doesn't write songs like the aforementioned "ask" or "hairdresser on fire" :). There is a certain genre of Morrissey fan that believes he is the most profound thinker known to exist, & they're often given to outrageous claims of that sort. People of this type are also known to miss much of his tongue-in-cheek humor because they are too busy dying everything they own black and yelling "Meat is Murder" at passerby. I'm not saying your friend is this bad :). But she may have a case of the "morrissey over seriouses". Is this in fact the case, Sarah? Don't worry, I've known people like that too :). It's slightly annoying but it'll probably pass. Back to the real question- yes they both come from England, yes, they both display a certain deadpan wit, yes, they both are fine songwriters. Other similarities are lost on this feg. Oh, and I believe they are both vegetarians, if I am not mistaken. That would about be it. Actually compating those two is a bit like apples and oranges I think. I am not even sure why you would. Love to all fegs, Switchboard Susan P.S. Robyn's the individualistic scatalogical English eccentric, Morrissey's more your brutally honest, down-to-earth tell-it-like-it-is yet do it with a flourish sort of bloke. Draw your own meaning from the above. I confess I'm drunk at the time of going to press. I hope you were suitably entertained. Dave's right about my memory.) Inexplicably forgotten on my set list: "Glass Hotel". Robyn was reviewed glowingly in "LA View" (our third- tier free alternative weekly after the LA Weekly and LA Reader). Nothing new to true Fegs in the review, but it's good to see the Prince of Psych-uh-delic Whatever getting so much notice for a relatively low-profile show in LA. And I never dropped a single beer. I just kept putting my empties down on the floor, where the pathetically unobservant bystanders couldn't be bothered to avoid them as anyone with an ounce of consideration would.
