Perspex ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Mar 96 20:24:56 CST From: Truman Peyote Subject: Stuff about Robyn Well, here is my opinion on why Graham should have a chance. Personally, I think he ought to have one because no one EVER lets him dance, and this is his last chance to do so. Why, you may ask? Well, obviously the apocalypse is on the way, since all the see-through things are crawling from the sea (or was that to the sea, I forget?). And if the see-through things are craling around obviously Graham had better do his dancing ASAP if he's ever going to do it. Don't say ruddy hell or blimey! Don't complain that your feet aren't warm! Pray leave it alone. Go home and have some cocoa. Don't worry your lovely little head about disgusting sea creatures, crawling on the beach OR from the sea :). Just let Graham have his chance, why don't you? Does this line suggest or mean anything to any of you? And...did he ever sing it live with that line? Terry "The Human Mellotron" Marks a013645t@bcfreenet.seflin.lib.fl.us ------------------------------ From: RxBroome@aol.com Date: Mon, 11 Mar 1996 23:31:50 -0500 Subject: Stab at Tab- "QE" I've never tabbed anything before, but some of my fondest undergraduate memories are of when I worked the overnight shift at USC's post production facility. I had a swell boss, to whom I'm now engaged, and it was widely accepted that the overnite shift person could knock back a few beers to calm him/herself down. Dave "Blatzman" Santos, who was then the lead singer in my band, was often editing film while I was on the late shift. Neither of us ever got much done, as I usually had my guitar with me, and we'd be up 'til all hours drinkin' and annoying people with impromptu music, usually either our own or Robyn's. Dave was at my house a few nights ago, and as we reminisced, naturally a few tunes came back to us... one of which was "Queen Elvis". Since Terry's just requested it, here's my best approximation (hold on while I check some previous tabs to make sure I'm doing this right)... "QUEEN ELVIS" Intro: various voicings under a droning d-string D Dmaj7 People get what they deserve Dmaj7 Ami Time is round and space is curved G Honey have you got the nerve... to be Queen D (various suspensions) Elvis? (repeats all verses) ------------ Emi D Justify your special ways Emi A7 Justify your special ways... (Repeats all choruses) ------------- B (high E & B strings open) Oh, and I'll A D G sculpt you... so very hard G D A7 Oh, and I'll sculpt you... 'til you bleed. __________________________________________________ I think we all know the rest of the lyrics. I was taught guitar by my dad, who played more or less in the tradition of Appalachian folk musicians (the incestuous cousin of the Anglo-folk on which a lot of Robyn's music is based), so I freely adapt and do a lotta stuff by ear and instinct, which might not suit the true technicians among you. Nonetheless, you definitely CAN play "Queen Elvis" this way. As for "Toilet"-- after an ear-to-the-speaker examination of both versions, I am now thoroughly convinced that my Rastafarian diagnosis was correct (remember how prevalent fake-reggae was at the time). While on the topic, am I the only one who feels that, despite the attrocious drumming, the "switched instruments" version of this song is infinitely superior to the standard instrumentation version (the bonus track on the Ryko release)? The crap Stones imitation puts me right there in the stall with Robyn every time. One last question, inspired by this trip down Soft Boys lane-- are there any other Tom Verlaine die-hards out there? The SB's strike me as England's only answer to Television, and some of Robyn's leads still strike me as Verlaine-y ("Knife", "Lady Waters", etc, although it's probably more a matter of convergent evolution than actual influence). Verlaine's little-heard solo albums reveal a songwriting sense (and vocal style) that's every bit as idiosyncratic as Robyn's and works as a wonderful complement; they share a fondness for proper names and geographical references. If anyone's with me here, I'm desperately seeking CD copies of Tom's eponymous album as well as "Cover". If anyone's now saying, "Hey, Verlaine, yeah, he was okay in his time," I'll gladly provide you with a homemade career-overview tape so you'll be so impressed as to spend money to support this underappreciated artist struggling against the unfeeling corporate hegemony etc etc etc Rex ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Mar 1996 22:15:20 -0500 (EST) From: ! It is the ONE RH album I do not have. I have been looking for it in the used record stores around town and Toronto with no success. However, I just realized one VERY important thing: I have NEVER seen the album and have no idea what it looks like! So I was wondering whether anyone had ever scanned in the cover to QE? I searched all RH WWW pages I could find with little luck. Subject: what's in a name? i was poking around the web and came across the kabalarian society (certain fegs here may know why i came across them, but that is neither here nor there). they provide name analysis, based on the "Mathematical Principle," which i assume to be some form of numerological system ala gematria. anyways, here's what they have to say about our hero: ROBYN _________________________________________________________________ The name of Robyn creates a very pleasant, responsible nature. You love the security of a home and family and are fond of children. You have good business judgment but are not too aggressive in your dealings because you do not like to create issues. You would be successful in any position dealing with the public as you have a diplomatic and tactful manner and can put people at ease. You have the desire to help your fellow man and to assist others with their problems. You have a patient and kind nature and people are drawn to you because they feel no barriers between themselves and you. You are honest and responsible. However, one weakness that is paramount in your life is your lack of self-confidence and initiative. You must learn not to depreciate your abilities, but to exert your will to do what you know should be done. Weaknesses in your health would show through problems in the fluids of the body. you too can have your name analyzed at http://www.kabalarian.org/. woj (a name not in their database) ------------------------------ From: RxBroome@aol.com Date: Tue, 12 Mar 1996 22:56:22 -0500 Subject: Perspex Hmmm... Jah's increasing something, but nobody agrees on what. Dare I suggest that we've stumbled upon the problem at the root of organized religion? "Perspex"... this kills me. I've always been a sort of English-to-American interpreter for my international friends, due to my exposure to the English English through Robyn's music and too much British TV as a kid. My favorite example of this was officiating an argument between a (Norwegian) director and a (British) cameraman who were discussing what to use as the window on a set. Went something like this: Cameraman: Why don't we just use a sheet of perspex? Director: No, no, no... we'll just get some plexiglass! Cameraman: Well, let's at least price the perspex! Director: No, I know where we can get the plexiglass for cheap! etc. etc. etc. Which begs the question: would the birds, when they come alive, last longer before expiring if provided with a nice block of plexiglass instead? Rex PS-- policemen only sing if they're in the mood. Which they rarely are, thank God. Anyone remember "Cop Rock"? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The End of this Fegmaniax Digest.
