In fact, I have lots of RH tabs (most of them Terry's work, thank you Terry :)) but have noticed I have very few SBs tabs. This should be fixed. If someone's figured out "Queen of Eyes" I'd like to see it especially because I've been having trouble with it. I haven't actually heard this band, but they've been mainstays in LA for a while, and came to prominence while frequently backing Arthur at club shows-- mostly, as I understand it, on archival Love material. There's actually ostensibly a big "guitar-pop" movement brewing in LA (which is personally vexing 'cuz when I was doing it here a year and a half ago, nobody seemed to understand the concept anymore)... usually what it means is "power-pop", though, which gets old fairly quickly. Honestly, it's all there on "Singles Going Steady", a record that seems to have been rereleased under a multitude of titles by bands with one word for a name over the past few years. And no, I'm not shy about my musical prejudices... There was also a band kicking around here a year or so ago named Queen Elvis. Never heard them either, but it does give one hope. Throwing Robyn a birthday party? Interesting. From what I know of him, he probably would be a little put off by any kind of "theme" party that obsessed on the minutiae of his work or lyrical motifs. Probably I'd just but him a beer. Or maybe what he'd really like would be just to be totally and utterly left alone. I dunno. I'm not much of a starf***er and don't know what I'd say, especially to people I genuinely admire, anyway, that would A) succinctly express how much I think I owe them, and B) not be something they haven't heard a million times before. Years ago, at a public gathering, I recognized The Artist Formerly Known as Black Francis... or at least, I was pretty sure it was him. As the crowd was dispersing, I figured I had to test my theory, and I tapped him on the shoulder. With a rare dearth of verbosity, I asked him, "Excuse me, are you Black Francis?" He smiled impishly, nodded, and scuttled away, leaving me to realize that the question I'd asked was, in almost every possible sense, equivalent to "Do you have Prince Albert in a can?" At least he didn't take a blowtorch to my copy of "Come On Pilgrim"... Rex ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Mar 1996 07:54:58 -0500 (EST) From: Terry Marks Subject: Birthdays Two things.. The record is sort of rare (it's probably the Midnight Music pressing), but the two b-sides are easily obtained as bonus tracks on any of the more recent "Fegmania" CD reissues. "Some Body" is an especially nice tune. If you're new to the list you might have missed my own reminiscence as to the fate of my copy of this record... Other stuff: This "Shared Titles" thread is very interesting but seems a bit silly to me, not that I don't appreciate all the research that everyone has done. But the majority of Robyn's titles, especially on the solo LP's, aren't really all THAT unusual, are they? I mean, if my memory serves me correctly, "Vegetation and Dimes" was the original working title of Frank Sinatra's smash hit, "My Way," and the Beatles nearly released "Love Me Do" as "Furry Green Atom Bowl" but were prevented from doing so by their record company. And then, of course, there was Barry Manilow's (admittedly somewhat obscure) song, "Brenda's Iron Sledge," and also one of Paula Abdul's rare original tunes, "The Man With the Lightbulb Head," neither of which had anything to do with the Robyn H. tracks of the same name. Yes, yes, I know, but when one is accustomed to buying the vast bulk of one's music at used prices, $16 is a lot to ask, and "Y&O" was only purchased by diehard Fegs and therefore never appears in used bins. But enough of my grovelling... My question actually is about "Birdshead"... I know this one from an A&M promotional CD called "Pave the Earth" that an ex-girlfriend of mine had, where it appeared as a live version from a McCabe's show. Although the "Y&O" version has the Peter Buck starpower angle to it, it's infinitely inferior to the "Pave" version, which, even in the disgustingly overdrivenly-dubbed version I have, breaks my tiny heart every time... Has this version ever appeared anywhere else? If so, where? (The compilation in question, by the way, has two other groovy aspects: its satirical packaging, and the only commercially issued recording of John Wesley Harding's now eerily prescient reunion fantasy "When the Beatles Hit America"... it's otherwise disposible, as I recall.) I'm basically only interested in digital incarnations...as I mentioned, I already have a dub. Failing that, does anyone have a copy of "Pave" that they'd be willing to part with? -Rex PS-- the best thing about Peter Buck guest appearances is how innocuous they are, apparently a genuine labor of love. By contrast, I think that "She Doesn't Exist" would be infinitely improved by losing Michael Stipes's superfluous vocal, as would Kristin Hersh's "My Ghost" and most of the other pieces he's ruined with star turns. The only Stipe guest shot that doesn't annoy me is Billy Bragg's "You Woke Up My Neighbourhood", where he sings a genuine harmony. Guess what? What are their favorite hitchcock tunes? My daughter--who just turned three--wants to hear the Yip Song every day. Knows almost all the words too. Yesterday we caught her hammering on her toy xylephone and singing "this old man, he was flesh..." Way better entertainment than anything on TV. She's turned on a couple of her little friends to the tune as well. -russ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 7 Mar 1996 15:26:40 -0500 (EST) From: !
