Crushed and byrned fun in the sun Re: Talking Heads The Hedgehog Song ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Feb 96 23:05:08 CST From: Truman Peyote Subject: crushed tributes hmm.....I had a crush on Bryan Ferry for awhile too......what an odd coincidence. They seem so different and yet the report seems to suggest that people who get crushes on RH also get them on him :). I wonder if it's the Pisces thing (all skeptics skip this sentence :)) or something to do with the Moon in Libra, which tends to make for a very gentle soul, all things being equal (Bryan Ferry has Sun in Libra, which to anyone who knows anything at all about astrology shouldn't come as a huge surprise :)). Can't say I ever found Frank Black to my personal taste, but I have a friend who DOES so it's definitely possible- she always says she has no idea why, and I believe her. Another thing- does this Nick Drake tribute exist or was that something else somebody planted as a mean joke? :) Because I want a copy if they are to be had. Ditto on the ISB tribute. But most of all, I want to see a Robyn Hitchcock tribute. It's about time! I was thinking along the line of David Byrne, Chris >Frantz, Tina Weymouth, or Jerry Harrison. > Good question, Brett. I have oft wondered if Robyn meant the line "and he wrote my name next to yours--but it should have been David Byrne or somebody" as a compliment or an insult. Any answers or theories out there? kw K.A. I'm Matt from Boston. I have been a fan of RH's music for a couple of years now ever since a friend dragged me to a show. Robyn's solo performance at the club Nightstage ("don't look for it, it's not there anymore") left many a jaw adropped (including my own) and left me a great admirer of his music. So, now I'll leave a few questions if anyone can help me. 1)Does anybody have any live tapes of Boston Shows they would be willing to tape for me? 2)Are there any collections of RH's short stories available? And Michael, regarding your videos, I am looking forward to volume 2 but,3) are there any volume 1 available, and if so what's on it? Thanks everybody in advance, Cheers Matt ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Feb 1996 12:18:51 -0400 (EDT) From: daramsey@vassar.edu (david's ramsey) Subject: Re: Robyn on the Barrett Tribute I remember reading somewhere that Robyn had been approached about the Syd Barrett tribute album "Beyond the Wildwood", but Robyn declined to cover a song for the album because if I remember correctly he wanted to distance himself from the longstanding Robyn Hitchcock-Syd Barrett connection. daveR. ---there's only one way of life, and that's your own--- Levellers. ------------------------------ From: Ross Overbury Date: Wed, 7 Feb 96 13:45:39 EST Subject: The Barrett-Hitchcock connection daramsey@vassar.edu (david's ramsey) wrote: > > I remember reading somewhere that Robyn had been approached about > the Syd Barrett tribute album "Beyond the Wildwood", but Robyn declined to > cover a song for the album because if I remember correctly he wanted to > distance himself from the longstanding Robyn Hitchcock-Syd Barrett > connection. > > > daveR. Anyway, we shared offices(and dealer) with Stagecoach Productions, which was then promoting Talking heads(this was before they got BIG). Anyway, I hung out alot with the dealer, who hung out alot with the heads(by the way, this guy, Jamal, also did wierd magic stuff(which is why i stopped hanging out with him in the long run). Anyway, the point is, I was around the talking heads --and from what i can remember(we're talking the lost years) I didnt like them much. I got the feeling they were into dark stuff with Jamal, and I didnt want to get too close a look. Ive always found their stuff smart, but too dry, too abstracted, like they wwere dissecting themselves under microscopes. Or then again, I may have been paranoid. So I hope Robyns reference to Byrne is not necciccasrily complementyr. The talking heads really knew how to manipulate downtown NY into buying into their trip. I think Byrnes talented, but no genuis. Robyn, seems to have genuis, not only for music, but for NOT manipulating downtown NY, which some may bemoan, but i am most thankful for. there is nothing that drains the soul as quickly as being that ridicioulously hip. People loose track of what they really feel and are, and having no touchstone within themselves, wyre fashionably around without getting anyware. But, as usual, Im getting off the subject. As for crushes, I have an admitted weakness for , besides ourhero-- David Brinkley, Christopher Alexander, Harrison Ford(hes too freeze- dried now, but go back to Blade Runner...)V.S Naipaul,Whit Stillman (who back in my deb days had a crush on me), and just about anyone with strong bone structure and a quick wit. Never had one on Ferry(too much hair-jell), but when i was 15 i wanted to grow up and be Keith Richards. Luckily, it didnt happen. I think I may have thought dylan was god. The reason for this rambling post is Im goingto St Croix for 2 weeks, and I figured I better get as much out as possible before going cold turkey. Im going to miss this. Have fun without me.
